The grafting of methacrylonitrile(MAN) onto Kevlar 49 filament surface was carried out by anionic polymerization using sodium methylsulfinylcarbanion formed from sodium hydride and dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO). The effects of reaction conditions on the grafting percentage(GP) and on the tensile strength of the fiber were investgated. GP marktedly increased with increasing metalation time, and NaH concentration, polymerization temperature and time. The tensile strength of fiber decrased with increasing metalation time, and NaH concentration, polymerization temperature and time. The optimum conditions to increase over 40% of GP with below 10% reduction rate of tensile strength of fiber : NaH concentration ; 30.6 mmol/l/0.5g Kevlar, metalation time : 10min, polymerization tempera- ture : 5$0^{\circ}C$, polymerization time: 20 sec, monomer concentration : 1.12mol/l/0.5g Kevlar.

Characteristic of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator used in a solid rocket motor chamber was investigated at 1,030 psi, 35.86 s and 1,406 psi, 36.63 s. Surface status after test was similar each other and thermal destruction depth was 4.10 mm and 4.18 mm, respectively. Kinetic constant ${\xi}$, ${\zeta}$ and thermal destruction velocity $V_{TD}$ were also similar. It was concluded that characteristics of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator were not affected by change of chamber pressure.

In order to analysis creep characteristics and elastic recovery of the high-tech fibers for fishing gear materials, creep and elasticity tests were carried out on netting twines made of nylon, kevlar 29 and techmilon respectively. After creep tests, the rupture surface of raw materials was observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results obtained are as follows: 1. Netting twines were arranged in order of creep rupture time as follow: techmilon, kevlar 29, nylon. The creep progressive pace was the fastest in techmilon. 2. In order of the creep elongating, netting twines were arranged as follows: nylon, techmilon, kevlar 29. 3. The rupture time T sub(r) decreased almost linearly with the increase of applied load L on the log-log scaled graph. The empirical equations computed for kevlar 29 and techmilon are as follows: T sub(r kevlar 29)=1.9512$\times$1037L super(-15.773). T sub(r techmilon)=2.7146$\times$1016L super(-6.831). 4. It was observed by SEM that creep was progressed in all netting twines. The difference of rupture morphology was recognized clearly in tensile and creep tests. 5. In order of the elastic recovery, netting twines were arranged as follows: techmilon, kevlar 29, nylon.

In this paper, a numerical model for a Kevlar/Epoxy and Carbon-Kevlar/Epoxy tube used as an energy absorbing component has been developed and then results have been verified through experiment. The 2D shell element and Chang-Chang failure criterion of LS-DYNA that is commercial explicit FE code was used. Mechanical material properties for the model were obtained by material testing in advance. The numerical results were compared with quasi-static test results under axial compressive loading at 10mm/min. From the results, in the case of the Kevlar/Epoxy tube, load-crushed displacement curves were very close to the experiments and SEA (specific energy absorption) shows a good agreement with experimental one within less than 6%. However, the Carbon-Kevlar/Epoxy tube shows some differences with the experimental results.
Stab threats using sharp edged or pointed Instruments could be easily encountered by police officers or soldiers. In this study, the shear thickening fluids (STF) was impregnated into Kevlar fabrics to improve the stab protection and the resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was experimentally investigated. The puncture and cut resistance were tested using a drop test machine withspike and knife indenters fabricated based on the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standard. The STF was filled with spherical $SiO_2$ particles having an average diameter of 100nm, 300nm, and 500nm. The effect of particle size on puncture and cut resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was also investigated. The measured impact load histories showed that STF impregnation into fabric leads to withstand higher peak loads than that of neat fabrics under spike test. The test results showed that Kevlar impregnated with STF exhibit remarkable improvements in puncture resistance while it is slightly influential on the cut resistance. Specifically, particle size is the one of the dominant factors controlling fabric resistance to puncture under spike impact test.

The effects of chemical treatment on Kevlar-29 fibers have been studied in a composite system. The surface characteristics of the Kevlar-29 fibers were characterized by pH, acid-base value and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mechanical interfacial properties of final composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). Also, the impact properties of the composites were investigated in the differentiating studies between initiation and propagation energies, and ductile index (DI) along with maximum farce and total energy. It was found that the chemical treatment with phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$) solution significantly affected the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fibers and resin matrix, resulting in improving the mechanical interfacial strength of the composites. This was probably due to the presence of chemical polar groups on Kevlar surfaces, leading to an increment of interfacial binding force in a composite system.
Impact behaviors of the large deformable composites of Kevlar fiber reinforced composites of different preform structures have been investigated. An analytic tool was developed to characterize the impact behavior of the Kevlar composites. The image analysis technique, and deply technique were employed to develop energy balance equation under impact loading. An energy method was employed to establish the impact energy absorption mechanism of Kevlar multiaxial warp knitted composites. The total impact energy was classified into four categories including delamination energy, membrane energy, bending energy and rebounding energy under low velocity impact. Membrane and bending energy were calculated from the image analysis of the deformed shape of impacted specimen and delamination energy was calculated using the deplying technique. Also, the impact behavior of Kevlar composites under high velocity impact of full penetration of the composite specimen was studied. The energy absorption mechanisms under high velocity impact were modelled and the absorbed energy was classified into global deformation energy, shear-out energy, deformation energy and fiber breakage energy. The total energy obtained from the model corresponded reasonably well with the experimental results.

This manuscript presents an experimental investigation on the effect of Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) addition on the tensile, flexural and impact properties of woven Kevlar fabric reinforced epoxy composites. MWCNTs were dispersed in the epoxy resin by sonication technique and the samples were fabricated by hand layup laminating procedure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the microstructure of produced samples. The effects of adding small amounts (${\leq}1%$) of MWCNT on the tensile, flexural and impact (Izod) behaviors of laminated composites were analyzed. Results revealed that MWCNTs enhanced the Young's modulus up to 20%, bending modulus up to 40%, and impact strength up to 45% in comparison with woven Kevlar fabric/epoxy composites. It was found that the maximum improvements in mechanical properties were happened for 0.5 wt.% MWCNT.

This study investigated Kevlar fabric impregnated with shear thickening fluid (STF). The STF performance was assessed by comparing bullet-proof characteristics of STF impregnated and pure Kevlar material. The analysis employed a circular steel ball as the nominal warhead, and bulletproof characteristics were evaluated by the warhead residual velocity. Various initial velocity conditions were employed, with different bulletproof characteristics apparent for each velocity region. The results of this study provide effective data for future bulletproof material design and application.

An experimental study on frequency characteristics of the microphone array covered with Kevlar sheet was conducted in the closed test section. Microphones that were flush-mounted in the wall of wind tunnel were subjected to very high flow noise resulting from the turbulence in the wall boundary layer. This noise interference by the boundary layer was referred as 'a microphone self-noise' and various approaches were studied to reduce this interference. Recessed microphone array with high tensioned cover was one of the good approaches to reduce this self-noise. But, the array cover could cause an unexpected interference to the measuring results. In this paper the frequency characteristics of the microphone array with Kevlar cover was experimentally studied. The white noise was used as a reference noise source. Three kinds of tensions for the Kevlar cover were tested and those results were compared with the test results without the Kevlar cover. The gap effect between the cover and microphone head was also tested to find out the proper position of microphone in the array module. Test results show that the mid-tension and 10mm gap was the best choice in the tested cases.
