Intumescent system is a highly effective flame retardant technology that takes advantage of the mechanism of foaming and carbonization. In order to materialize Intumescent system, it is necessary to use reinforcement material to improve the strength of the material. In this study, we used kenaf as a natural fiber to manufacture intumescent/EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) composites to improve mechanical and flame retardant performance. Finally two materials with different particle shape are applied to one system. Therefore, the influence factors of the particles with different shapes on the composite material were analyzed based on the tensile test. For this purpose, we have used the tensile strength analysis model and confirmed that it can only act as a partial strength reinforcement due to weak binding force between the matrix and particles. In the combustion characteristics analysis using cone calorimeter and UL 94, the combustion characteristics were enhanced as the content of Intuemscent was increased. As the content of kenaf increased, combustion characteristics were strengthened and carbonization characteristics were weakened. Through the application of kenaf, it can be confirmed that elastic modulus improvement and combustion characteristics can be strengthened, which confirmed the possibility of development of environmentally friendly flame retardant materials.
Anatomical properties of Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) planted in a reclaimed-land of Korea were examined to understand the growth characteristics by an optical and scanning electron microscopy. The samples of kenaf were taken from four positions of the stem (3, 35, 70, 105 cm above from the ground) in four growth periods (July. August, September, October) from seeding planted in the middle of May. Bast fiber, phloem rays, cortex parenchyma cells and sieve tube members were observed in phloem, and vessel elements, fibers and rays in xylem. Solitary and multiple radial pores existed in xylem. The cell types of ray parenchyma in radial section were procumbent, upright, and square. The intervascular pitting showed an alternate type. Xylem proportion, the number of bast fibers and dimension of phloem rays increased with increasing growth period, and decreased with increasing stem height. The proportion of multiseriate rays was higher than that of uniseriate and biseriate rays in xylem with increasing growth period. On the other hand, The proportion of multiseriate rays was lower than that of uniseriate and biseriate rays in xylem with increasing stem height.

A field trial was conducted from May to November 2000 at four regions of Jeju province(Jeju, Seogwipo, Susan Seongsan and Keumak Hallim) to estimate adaptation, dry matter yield and nutrient value of kenafs(Everglades 41 and China Choung-pi 3) and a sorghum-sudangrass hybrid(Pioneer 947). Total dry matter(DM) yields of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid Pioneer 947, kenaf Everglades 41 and kenaf China Chong-pi 3 were 7,313, 4,653 and 5,238 kg/ha(P<0.05), respectively, kenaf China Chong-pi 3 being the highest. The region specific dry matter(DM) yields of Jeju, Seogwipo, Seongsan and Hallim area were 5,040, 5,663, 7,283 and 4,950kg/ha, respectively, showing that Seogwipo was the highest. Average DM yields of two kenaf varieties were 4,946, and 3,246 kg/ha for 1st time-cutting and 2nd time-cutting, respectively. The average dry matter(DM) yield of kenaf was significantly higher in the 1st time-cutting than the 2nd time. No significant difference in neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and acid detergent fiber(ADF) contents was found among three varieties. The average crude protein(CP) content of kenaf was higher than that of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid(P<0.05) and was higher in 2nd time-cutting than in 1st time-cutting(P<0.05). There were no significant difference in the heavy metal content of soil either between the sorghum hybrid and kenafs or between two kenaf varieties. In conclusion, the average dry matter(DM) yield of kenaf was lower than that of sorghum hybrid, Contrarily the crude protein(CP) content of kenafs was higher than that of the sorghum hybrid. The average dry matter(DM) yield of kenaf showed higher in 1st time-cutting than 2nd time-cutting, while the crude protein(CP) content of kenafs decreased with time.
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), an annual plant of the family Malvaceae, is considered to be the most promising for alternative plants with potential use as a non-wood fiber source. The objectives of this study were to select the optimum seeding date and adaptable cultivar among newly introduced kenaf cultivars (Everglades-41, Tainung-2 and Chingpi-3) in Jeju island, and to clarify the photosynthetic characteristics of those cultivars. Among the three cultivars, the fresh shoot weight per unit area of Chingpi-3 at harvest season showed highest through all seeding dates, that of while Everglades-41 was the lowest. The difference of shoot yield at harvest mainly due to seedling stand rate and plant number per unit area among the cultivars. The Chingpi-3 showed the highest shoot fresh weight in the seeding date of May 11 and decreased trend in the late seeding dates. Net photosynthesis rate was higher on Everglades-41 with entire type leaf than other two cultivars with palmate type leaf. The activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/foxygenase (rubisco) estimated from the A-Ci curve showed highest in Chingpi-3 among three cultivars. These results suggest that Chingpi-3 might be adaptable cultivar with seeding date of around May 10 for kenaf production in Jeiu island.
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) is an annual herbaceous plant of the family Malvacease that has been planted in tropical Africa and Asia region for more than 4000 years and use as source of fiber, energy and feed stock. In this study, the physiological characters and chemical compositions of kenaf mutant variety "Jangdae" developed using gamma irradiation at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) were compared with three genetic resources (Auxu, C12, and C14-DRS). Jangdae showed the highest productivity growth rates in fresh yield, dry weight (DW) yield (leaf and stem), node number, and stem thickness. Especially, leaf DW yield of Jangdae was 1.6-3.1 times higher than that of three genetic resources. Also, stem DW yield of Jangdae was 1.6-2.1 times higher than that of three genetic resources. In the analysis of chemical composition, Jangdae showed 16.9% of crude protein content that was 0.86-0.94 times lower than three cultivars. However, Jangdae showed the highest neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents in leaf (32.5%) and stem (75.2%). Also, acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents of stem and leaf in Jangdae were 64.4% and 33.9%, respectively. Total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents were 22.1 mg/g and 7.4 mg/g in Jangdae. Based on these results, Jangdae would have the potential to become a successful forage crop.

Maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) copolymers were prepared by changing MAH and styrene monomer (SM) content, using a twin screw extruder at $190^{\circ}C$. The grafting degree was measured by non-aqueous back titration method. The grafting degree of PP-g-MAH-SM copolymer was higher than that of PP-g-MAH at the same MAH content. PP-g-MAH-SM/kenaf fiber (KF) composites were also prepared by using a PP-g-MAH as a matrix at $200^{\circ}C$ and the KF content was fixed at 20 wt%. Based on the degradation temperature investigated by TGA, the thermal stability of PP-g-MAH-SM/KF composites was more enhanced than that of PP-g-MAH only. Mechanical properties of the composites were also improved when MAH and SM applied together. The adhesion degree between the copolymer and KF was confirmed by both SEM pictures of the fractured surface and contact angles.

To use kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) as a fiber and livestock feed, a high-yielding variety needs to be identified. For this, accurate phenotyping of plant height is required for this breeding purpose due to the strong relationship between plant height and yield. Plant height can be estimated using RGB images from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV-RGB) and photogrammetry based on Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithms. In kenaf, accurate measurement of height is limited because kenaf stems have high flexibility and its height is easily affected by wind, growing up to 3 ~ 4 m. Therefore, we aimed to identify a method suitable for the accurate estimation of plant height of kenaf and investigate the feasibility of using the UAV-RGB-derived plant height map. Height estimation derived from UAV-RGB was improved using multi-point calibration against the five different wooden structures with known heights (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 cm). Using the proposed method, we analyzed the variation in temporal height of 23 kenaf cultivars. Our results demontrated that the actual and estimated heights were reliably comparable with the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.80 and a slope of 0.94. This method enabled the effective identification of cultivars with significantly different heights at each growth stages.

In order to determine the influence of nitrogen on agronomic characters, forage yield and quality, a Kenaf was cultured on the volcanic ash soil at the Experimental Farm of Cheju national University under the seven levels of nitrogen rates(0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from April 25 to Dec. 25, 1999. The plant height increased by increase of nitrogen rate, showing longest 250kg/ha with 286.6cm and shortest at no application plot with 255.7cm. The difference on leaf number, leaf withering number, stem diameter and branches number by nitrogen rate showed a similar tendency to the plant height. Increasing N rate from 0 to 250kg/ha fresh forage yield form 55.8 to 99.8MT/ha, dry matter (DM) yield from 8.8 to 15.8MT/ha, crude protein(CP) yield form 1.2 to 3.1MT/ha, total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield from 3.8 to 8.6MT/ha. However, no significant differences in these yields were found between 200 and 250kg N/ha. Nitrogen uptake increased form 192.9 to 496.2 kg/ha but N use efficiency decreased form 95.0 to 66.6 kg DM$^{a}$ /kg N with increasing from 0 to 250 kg/ha. As N rate increased from 0 to 250kg/ha, leaf and stem out of CP, crude fat (CF), nitrogen free extract (NFE), TDN contents increased from 20.1% to 25.8% and from 9.7% to 12.4%, from 5.6% to 8.1% and from 3.3% to 4.4%, from 36.1% to 40.2% and from 21.9% to 32.4%, from 59.3% to 75.0% and from 32.2% to 38.2%, respectively, while leaf and stem out of crude fiber decreased from 18.5% to 16.7% and from 51.5% to 39.3%. Based on the these findings, the optimum N rate for forage production of kenaf seems to be about 200 kg/ha in atmospheric phenomena and volcanic ash soils of jeju island.

In order to increase the compatibility of polypropylene (PP) and kenaf fiber (KF) felt, PP/KF and PP/KF/polyurethane (PU) felt composites were prepared by treating KF with three kinds of silane coupling agents. The concentration of silane coupling agents was fixed at 1 wt%. The chemical reaction between KF and silane coupling agents was confirmed by the existence of Si-O-Si and Si-O-C functional group bands appeared on FT-IR and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). Thermal properties of PP/KF composites were investigated by DSC and TGA, and the thermal stability of PP/KF composites with treated KF increased. Based on tensile, flexural and impact properties of PP/KF and PP/KF/PU composites, 1-2 wt% of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS) contents were the optimum formulation as a compatibilizer. The tensile and flexural strength of the felt composites treated with the silane coupling agents were improved. This is mainly due to the improvement in the compatibility between PP and KF, which was confirmed by SEM images of the fractured surfaces after tension tests.
This study has been conducted from April 25, 1999 to June 25, 1999 in Jeju Province in order to determine the influence of seeding date on growth, yield and chemical composition of Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 decreased the plant height of Kenaf from 278.5 cm to 205.7 cm. As for the number of leaves, number of withering leaves, number of branches, and stem diameter decreased as the seeding date was delayed. As the seeding date was delayed, fresh forage yield decreased from 98.5MT/㏊ to 45.9MT/㏊, dry matter yield from 20.7MT/㏊ to 8.2MT/㏊, crude protein (CP) yield from 2.9MT/ha to 1.3MT/ha and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield form 1l.6MT/㏊ to 5MT/㏊. However, both leaf yield and stem yield were nearly the same tendency. Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 increased crude protein contents of leaves from 21.5% to 24.4%, crude fat contents from 5.2% to 6.1%, nitrogen free extract (NFE) contents form 39.9% to 41.2% and TDN contents from 64.3% to 69.7%. However, delaying seeding date decreased crude fiber contents from 20.8% to 17.5%, and crude ash contents from 7.9% to 7.0%. Based on the these findings, optimum seeding date for forage production of Kenaf seems to be about 25 April in atmospheric phenomena and volcanic ash soils of Jeju island.
