This paper presents an efficiency of various non-conforming (NC) modes in development of a series of new finite elements with the special emphasis on 4-node quadrilateral elements. The NC modes have been used as a key scheme to improve the behaviors of various types of new finite elements, i.e., Mindlin plate bending elements, membrane elements with drilling degrees of freedom, flat shell elements. The NC modes are classified into three groups according to the 'correction constants' of 'Direct Modification Method'. The first group is 'basic NC modes', which have been widely used by a number of researchers in the finite element communities. The basic NC modes are effective to improve the behaviors of regular shaped elements. The second group is 'hierarchical NC modes' which improve the behaviors of distorted elements effectively. The last group is 'higher order NC modes' which improve the behaviors of plate-bending elements. When the basic NC modes are combined with hierarchical or higher order NC modes, the elements become insensitive to mesh distortions. When the membrane component of a flat shell has 'hierarchical NC modes', the membrane locking can be suppressed. A number of numerical tests are carried out to show the positive effect of aforementioned various NC modes incorporated into various types of finite elements.
A procedure is formulated, in this paper, to compute the bifurcation modes born by the stability change of normal modes, and to compute the forced responses associated with bifurcation modes in inertially and elastically coupled nonlinear oscillators. It is assumed that a saddle-loop is formed in Poincare map at the stability chage of normal modes. In order to test the validity of procedure, it is applied to one-to-one internal resonant systems in which the solutions are guaranteed within the order of a small perturbation parameter. The procedure is also applied to the exact system in which normal modes are written in exact form and the stability of normal modes can be exactly determined. In this system the stability change of normal modes occurs several times so that various types of bifurcation modes are created. A method is described to identify a fixed point on Poincare map as one of bifurcation modes. The limitations and advantage of proposed procedure are discussed.

We have investigated the coupling characteristics of localized modes of line defect i.e., guided modes, in photonic crystals. The parity of the coupled guided modes is not conserved when the distance between the line defects changes. By comparing the coupling characteristics of localized modes without the oscillatory nature such as cavity modes of metallic Fabry-Parot cavities with those of localized modes in photonic crystals, we confirmed that this parity nonconservation is attributed to the oscillatory nature of the evanescent waves of localized modes in photonic crystals.
The purpose of this paper is to carry out Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and use criticality in order to determine risk priority number of the components of electric power installations in Engineering college building of D university. In risk priority number, GROUP A had 7 failure modes; more specifically, Transfomer had 4 modes, Filter(C)(1 mode), LA(1 mode), and CB(MCCB)(1 mode), and thus 4 components had failure modes. In terms of criticality, high-grade group a total of 16 failure modes, and 7 components-LA(1 mode), CB(MCCB)(1 mode), MOF(2 modes), PT(1 mode), Transformer(7 modes), Cable(3 modes), and Filter(C)(1 mode)-had failure modes. Comparison of risk priority number and criticality was made. The components which had high risk priority number and high criticality were Transformer, Filter(C), LA, and CB(MCCB). The components which had high criticality were MOF and cable. In particular, Transformer(RPN: 4 modes, Criticality: 7 modes) was chosen as an intensive management component.
An efficient and accurate classification method for failure modes of reinforced concrete (RC) columns was proposed based on key characteristic parameters. The weight coefficients of seven characteristic parameters for failure modes of RC columns were determined first based on the support vector machine-recursive feature elimination. Then key characteristic parameters for classifying flexure, flexure-shear and shear failure modes of RC columns were selected respectively. Subsequently, a support vector machine with key characteristic parameters (SVM-K) was proposed to classify three types of failure modes of RC columns. The optimal parameters of SVM-K were determined by using the ten-fold cross-validation and the grid-search algorithm based on 270 sets of available experimental data. Results indicate that the proposed SVM-K has high overall accuracy, recall and precision (e.g., accuracy>95%, recall>90%, precision>90%), which means that the proposed SVM-K has superior performance for classification of failure modes of RC columns. Based on the selected key characteristic parameters for different types of failure modes of RC columns, the accuracy of SVM-K is improved and the decision function of SVM-K is simplified by reducing the dimensions and number of support vectors.
The intra prediction technique is the one of the key factors to the success of H.264. There are nine optional prediction modes for each $4{\times}4$ luma block and 4 modes for each $16{\times}16$ luma block. To reduce the intra mode bits efficiently, the most probable mode (MPM) is estimated by using the intra modes of the adjacent blocks, since intra modes for neighboring $4{\times}4$ luma blocks are correlated. In this paper, a new method for estimating the MPM is proposed by using the statistical distribution of intra modes of adjacent intra blocks. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a coding gain of about 0.1dB.
Directional emission of light exiting a photonic crystal waveguide by a coherent action of radiative surface modes was recently demonstrated, and subsequently the substantial enhancement of the directional emission was achieved by engineering the surface and adjusting relevant parameters. Here we present the analysis of surface modes causing the enhanced emission by the plane wave expansion method and the finite-difference time-domain method. In particular, surface band structures are calculated for nonradiative and radiative surface modes, respectively, and intensity profiles of some representative modes for nonradiative and radiative cases are given.
Cold Formed Steel members are widely used in today's construction industry. However the structural behavior of light gauge high strength cold formed steel sections characterized by various buckling modes are not yet fully understood. Because of their simple forming and easy connections, the commonly used cold formed sections for beams are C and Z. However both these sections suffer from certain buckling modes. To achieve much improved structural performance of cold formed sections for beams both in terms of strength and stiffness, it is important to either delay or completely eliminate their various modes of buckling. This paper presents various innovative sectional profiles and stiffening arrangements for cold formed steel beams which would successfully contribute in delaying or eliminating various modes of premature buckling, thus considerably improving the load carrying capacity as well as stiffness characteristics of such innovative cold formed sections compared to conventional cold formed steel sections commonly used for beams.

This paper introduces a method for calculation of dynamic stress occurring in flexible bodies of a moving multibody system by using commercial softwares DADS for dynamic analysis and MSC/NASTRAN for finite element analysis. Three methods for model transient response analysis of a flexible body are summarized. Elastic deformation of a flexible body can be described with normal modes and static modes composed of constraint modes and residual attachment modes. The deformation modes divided into fixed-interface modes and free-interface modes can be determined by using MSC/NASTRAN and selected for dynamic analysis. The dynamic results obtained from DADS are utilized to calculate dynamic stress by using mode-displacement method or mode-acceleration method of MSC/NASTRAN. As a numerical example of the analysis, we used a three dimensional slider-crank model with a flexible connecting rod.
This study examined how preschool children's age and mothers' modes of verbal control affect children's lying. A sample of 108 preschool children aged from 3 to 6 participated in a lying experiment. Their mothers answered questionnaires regarding the mothers' modes of verbal control. Preschool children's lying was measured by the Guessing Game Experiment developed by Talwar and Lee(2002). Mothers' modes of verbal control were measured by Jung's(2005) scale for preschool children. To analyze the data, crosstabs and logistic regression analyses were conducted. The results of the experiment showed that three-year-old children are able to lie intentionally. The older preschool children lied more than the younger ones. Mothers' imperative and personal modes of verbal control were positively related to preschool children's lying. The most significant variable on preschool children's lying was mother's imperative modes of verbal control, followed by personal modes of verbal control, which emphasizes the crucial influence of parenting on preschool children's lying.
