  • A hybrid RANS/LES approach, based on the Limited Numerical Scales concept, is applied to the numerical simulation of the flow around a square cylinder. The key feature of this approach is a blending between two eddy-viscosities, one given by the $k-{\varepsilon}$ RANS model and the other by the Smagorinsky LES closure. A mixed finite-element/finite-volume formulation is used for the numerical discretization on unstructured grids. The results obtained with the hybrid approach are compared with those given by RANS and LES simulations for three different grid resolutions; comparisons with experimental data and numerical results in the literature are also provided. It is shown that, if the grid resolution is adequate for LES, the hybrid model recovers the LES accuracy. For coarser grid resolutions, the blending criterion appears to be effective to improve the accuracy of the results with respect to both LES and RANS simulations.

  • In this study, three-dimensional viscous flow analysis and optimization are presented for the design of a mixed-flow fan. Steady, imcompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governimg equations are discretized using finite volume method. Upwind difference scheme is used for the discretization of the convective term and SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. The computational results are compared with the results obtained by TASCflow. For the numerical optimization of the design, objective function is defined as a ratio of generation of the turbulent energy to pressure head. Sweep angles are used as design variables.

  • Transition sequence of rocket to ramjet was simulated numerically for a two-dimensional axisymmetric can-type ramjet engine. Multi-species preconditioned Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and finite-rate chemistry model was employed. To calculate transition sequence, initial flow-field conditions for inlet diffuser with closed port-cover was computed first, and then that result was applied as initial conditions after port-cover opened. Terminal shock was developed as a result of increased pressure in a combustor due to combustion and ramjet operated at supercritical condition. For a smaller nozzle throat area, buzz instability was occurred. Strong pressure oscillations were observed as a result of forward and backward movement of terminal shock and those oscillations were not damped out.

  • In this study, wave pressure is calculated by using irregular waves in front of a breakwater. In the numerical model, the Reynolds equations are solved by a finite difference method and $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is employed for the turbulence analysis. To track the free surface displacement, the volume of fluid method is employed. The results of two cases present that wave pressure change due to irregular wave similar to wave height of irregular wave. It is observed that wave pressure of Case 2 more bigger than wave pressure of Case 1 at the same position.

  • A series of numerical calculations are performed in order to investigate the dispersion mechanism of toxic gaseous and solid pollutants in extremely short-term and short range. The calculations are carried out in an open space characterized by turbulent boundary layer. The simulation is made by the use of numerical model, in which a control-volume based finite difference method is used together with the SIMPLEC algorithm for the resolution of the pressure-velocity coupling problem. The Reynolds stresses are solved by two-equation, k-$\varepsilon$ model modified for buoyancy. The major parameters consider-ed in this study are temperature, velocity and Injection height of toxic gases, environmental conditions such as temperature and velocity of free stream air, and topographic factor. The results are presented and discussed in detail. The flow field is commonly characterized by the formation of a strong recirculation zone due to the upward motion of the hot toxic gas and ground shear stress. The driving force of the upward motion is explained by the effect of thermal buoyancy of hot gas and the difference of inlet velocity between toxic gas and free stream.

  • Three-dimensional flow analysis and numerical optimization methods are presented for the design of an axial-flow fan. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard k- ${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governing equations are discretized using finite volume method. Steepest descent method, conjugate gradient method and BFGS method are compared to determine the searching directions. Golden section method and quadratic fit-sectioning method are tested for one dimensional search. Objective function is defined as a ratio of generation rate of the turbulent kinetic energy to pressure head. Two variables concerning sweep angle distribution are selected as the design variables. Performance of the final fan designed by the optimization was tested experimentally.

  • Predictions of the pedestrian level wind speeds for the downtown area of Auckland that have been obtained by wind tunnel and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling are presented. The wind tunnel method involves the observation of erosion patterns as the wind speed is progressively increased. The computational solutions are mean flow calculations, which were obtained by using the finite volume code PHOENICS and the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The results for a variety of wind directions are compared, and it is observed that while the patterns are similar there are noticeable differences. A possible explanation for these differences arises because the tunnel prediction technique is sensitivity to gust wind speeds while the CFD method predicts mean wind speeds. It is shown that in many cases the computational model indicates high mean wind speeds near the corner of a building while the erosion patterns are consistent with eddies being shed from the edge of the building and swept downstream.

  • Research being undertaken at the University of Auckland has enabled Vortec Energy to improve the performance of the Vortec 7 Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbine. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling of the Vortec 7 was used to ascertain the effectiveness of geometric modifications to the Vortec 7. The CFD work was then developed to look at new geometries, and refinement of these led to greater power augmentation for a given diffuser exit area ratio. Both full scale analysis of the Vortec 7 and a wind tunnel investigation of the development design have been used for comparison with the CFD model.

  • Hybrid propulsion systems provide many advantages in terms of stable operation and safety. However, classical hybrid rocket motors have lower fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency compared to solid propellant rocket motor. Accordingly, the recent research efforts are focused on the improvement of engine efficiency and regression rate in the hybrid rocket engine. The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes in the hybrid rocket engine. The turbulent combustion is represented by the flamelet model and Low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model is employed to reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions have been made for the effects of oxygen injection methods and oxygen injection flow rate on flame structure and regression rate in the vortex hybrid rocket engines

  • The present study deals with CFD analysis of 'The vortex generators on plastic plate heat exchanger'. When a vortex generator is placed on the heat transfer surface, the flow gets more complex because it entails complicated three-dimensional flows such as separation, reattachment, and recirculation. CFX-5.4, a commercial code utilizing unstructured mesh, has been used as a computational method for solving RANS(Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes) equations, and the applied turbulence model is $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. In addition, those computational analyses were implemented under various conditions , with or without the vortex generator between two plates, the number, form and the size of vortex generator, and different attack of angle. From the calculated temperature, velocity and pressure distribution, vorticity, wall heat flux and so on under those conditions, this study shows the effect of vortex on heat transfer.
