  • A sinusoidal model has been widely used in the analysis and synthesis of speech and audio signals, and becomes one of the efficient candidates for high quality low bit rate audio coders. One of the crucial steps in the analysis and synthesis using a sinusoidal model is the detection of tonal components. This paper proposes an efficient method for the analysis and synthesis of audio signals using a sinusoidal model, which uses psychoacoustic criteria such as masking effect, masking index, and JNDf(Just Noticeable Difference in Frequency). Simulation results show that the proposed method reduces the number of sinusoids significantly without degrading the quality of the synthesized audio signals.

  • This paper proposes a novel spectral hole substitution technique for low bit-rate audio coding. The spectral holes frequently occurring in relatively weak energy bands due to zero bit quantization result in severe quality degradation, especially for harmonic signals such as speech vowels. The enhanced aacPlus (EAAC) audio codec artificially adjusts the minimum signal-to-mask ratio (SMR) to reduce the number of spectral holes, but it still produces noisy sound. The proposed method selectively predicts the spectral shapes of hole bands using either intra-band correlation, i.e. harmonically related coefficients nearby or inter-band correlation, i.e. previous frames. For the bands that have low prediction gain, only the energy term is quantized and spectral shapes are replaced by pseudo random values in the decoding stage. To minimize perceptual distortion caused by spectral mismatching, the criterion of the just noticeable level difference (JNLD) and spectral similarity between original and predicted shapes are adopted for quantizing the energy term. Simulation results show that the proposed method implemented into the EAAC baseline coder significantly improves speech quality at low bit-rates while keeping equivalent quality for mixed and music contents.

  • In this paper, we propose a Progressive scalable video coding algorithm using frequency weighting in the DCT domain. Since the human visual system (HVS) can be modeled as a nonlinear point transformation, called the modulation transfer function (MTF), we tan use the frequency weighting matrix to enhance the video image quality. We change this frequency weighting matrix into the frequency shift matrix to apply to the bit-plane coding method for the fine granular scalable (FGS) video coding We also define a new error metric JNDE (just noticeable difference) to measure the perceptual image quality in terms of human vision.

  • As BIM(Building Information Modeling) is widely used in the construction process the need for exploring building models realistically is also growing. In this paper, we present a 3D stereoscopic navigation method for virtual buildings considering virtual perception. We first find out factors that may cause virtual discomfort while navigating stereoscopic building models, and then develop a method for automatically adjusting the range of virtual camera separation. In addition, we measure each user's JND(Just Noticeable Difference) in depth to adjust virtual camera separation and movement. The presented method can be used for various architectural applications by creating user-customized 3D stereoscopic contents.

  • The architectural, facility makes the housing environment more pleasant, while too much noise coming from machinery room is detrimental to the workers physically and mentally. Therefore, more sound insulation and sound proof policies are increasingly required. However, as the annoyance caused by facility noise is influenced by various human listening characteristics as well as physical characteristics such as sound pressure level, it requires subjective evaluation characteristics through acoustic-psychological approach. For this purpose, the facility noise in the machinery room was actually measured and analyzed in the field to understand physical characteristics, and the correlation between physical evaluation value and psychological response value through listening test. Further, this study aims at presenting the data to set the standards of 'Just noticeable difference' of the facility noise together with reasonable evaluation with psychological reaction, through the grading of facility noise using trend formula. In the result, 13 stages of physical properties were forecasted for each evaluation method, together with 'Just noticeable difference' using the grading of architectural facility noise.

  • In this paper, a novel multiple description image coding (MDC) scheme is proposed, which is based on the characteristics of the human visual model. Due to the inherent characteristics of human vision, the human eye can only perceive the change of the specific thresholds, that is, the just noticeable difference (JND) thresholds. Therefore, JND model is applied to improve MDC syetem. This paper calculates the DCT coefficients firstly, and then they are compared with the JND thresholds. The data that is less than the JND thresholds can be neglected, which will improve the coding efficiency. Compared with other existing methods, the experimental results of the proposed method are superior.

  • The demand of image compression is increasing now for the integration of medical images into the hospital information system. Even though the quantitative distortion can be measured from the difference between original and reconstructed images, it doesn't include the nonlinear characteristics of human visual system. In this study, we have evaluated the nonlinear characteristics of human visual system and applied them to the compression of medical images. The distortion measures which reflect the characteristics of human visual system has been considered. This image compression procedure consists of coding scheme using JND (Just Noticeable Difference) curve, polynomial approximation and BTC (Block Truncation Coding). Results show that this method can be applied to CT images, scanned film images and other kinds of medical images with the compression ratio of 5-10:1 without any noticeable distortion.

  • In this paper, we propose a Tone Mapping Operator (TMO) that preserves global contrast and precisely preserves boundary information. In order to reconstruct a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image to a Low Dynamic Range (LDR) display by using Threshold value vs. Intensity value (TVI) based on Human Visual System (HVS) and contrast value. As a result, the global contrast of the image can be preserved. In addition, by combining the boundary information detected using Guided Image Filtering (GIF) and the detected boundary information using the spatial masking of the Just Noticeable Difference (JND) model, And improved the perceived image quality of the output image. The conventional TMOs are classified into Global Tone Mapping (GTM) and Local Tone Mapping (LTM). GTM preserves global contrast, has the advantages of simple implementation and fast execution time, but it has a disadvantage in that the boundary information of the image is lost and the regional contrast is not preserved. On the other hand, the LTM preserves the local contrast and boundary information of the image well, but some areas are expressed unnatural like the occurrence of the halo artifact phenomenon in the boundary region, and the calculation complexity is higher than that of GTM. In this paper, we propose TMO which preserves global contrast and combines the merits of GTM and LTM to preserve boundary information of images. Experimental results show that the proposed tone mapping technique has superior performance in terms of cognitive quality.

  • Steganography based on Just Noticeable Difference(JND) has been used for natural images. However, it has been recognized to have defects for the non-natural images such as scanned text images, cartoons, etc. In this paper, an alternative method is proposed to improve this problem. A new scheme is designed specially for the non-natural images. Instead of JND, Noise Visibility Function(NVF) is used. NVF value and edge strength value of each pixel ate combined to decide the embedding data capacity and the visibility of data embedded images have been improved specially for the non-natural images.
