  • COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) will be launch at end of year 2008. For speedy and security communication of COMS, KARl (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) decided encryption and compression design. Encryption design is based on DES (Data Encryption Standard), so that encryption key generation and management are important issues in COMS operation. And Compression is based on loss and lossless JPEG (Joint Photographic Export Group) standard. JPEG is one of generally using compression algorithm in image.

Forward Adaptive Prediction on Modified Integer Transform Coefficients for Lossless Image Compression (무손실 영상 압축을 위한 변형된 정수 변환 계수에 대한 순방향 적응 예측 기법)

  • This paper proposes a compression scheme based on the modified reversible integer transform (MRIT) and forward adaptive prediction for lossless image compression. JPEG XR is the newest image coding standard with high compression ratio and that composed of the Photo Core Transform (PCT) and backward adaptive prediction. To improve the efficiency and quality of compression, we substitutes the PCT and backward adaptive prediction for the modified reversible integer transform (MRIT) and forward adaptive prediction, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method are superior to the previous method of JPEG XR in terms of lossless compression efficiency and computational complexity.

  • Large medical images in PACS are compressed for saving storage space and improving network speed. The integrated compression environment was designed and developed for uniting of various compression methods. Various compression algorithm-RLE compression, lossless JEPG, JPEG, was built into it, complying with DICOM. A image compression using DWT was also implemented in it. And a unified algorithm of lossless compression and lossy compression was designed to improve images quality and to make compression ratios high. And integrated compression environment was operating together with a database program for efficient and user-friendly management.

  • 본 연구는 JPEG(Joint Photographic Experts Group)표준 영상압축 방법을 이용한 원격측정 (remote measuring) 시스템을 다룬다. 많은 디지탈 비디오(digital video)이 응용중에서 주요 어려움은 디지탈 영상(digital image)을 직접적으로 표현하기 위해 필요한 방대한 데이터의 처리문제이다. 그리고 디지탈 영상의 직접적인 사용은 고수준 기억용량(high storage)과 전송비용(transmission costs)으로 인하여 응용상 여러가지 제약조건이 수반되었다. 이런 이유로 인하여 여러가지 영상압축 기법이 개발되어왔으며 본 연구는 정지영상(still pictures)에 대하여 JPEG 표준을 사용한 영상압축과 압축된 영상을 사용하여 실제 제조업의 공정검사에 응용하는 것이다. 수행도 평가척도로서 원래영상과 압축된 영상과의 압축비, 원래영상과 압축된 영상과의 픽셀(pixel)의 회색도 값(gray-level value)의 평균과 RMSE(root mean square error), 그리고 원래영상과 압축된 영상을 원거리(또는 근거리)로 전송하여 전송된 압축영상을 푼 후 두 지점간의 거리 측정에 따르는 실제거리와 측정거리에 대한 오차를 이용하였다.

  • Integral Imaging (II) is an attractive technique for three-dimensional (3D) image, video display and recording. Inherently, the high resolution II requires an enormous amount of data for storing and transmitting of 3D scenes. Compression techniques attempt to evade this issue. In this study, we made a comparative performance analysis of popular transforming/compression techniques such as the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) in order to compress 3D-II. The standard baseline JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) using DCT and JPEG 2000 using DWT methods were manipulated in our experiments. In our analysis, we have shown that the DWT based JPEG 2000 compression methodology could be a good alternative for 3D-II.

  • 본 논문에서는 제한요소가 많은 임베디드 환경에서의 실시간 Motion-JPEG 전송을 초점으로 하고 있으며, 현재에 얻어진 이미지와 이전의 이미지를 비교하여 움직임이 있는 부분의 블록만을 전송하는 시스템을 제안한다. 제안한 시스템에서는 처리시간과 처리 데이터 용량에서 이득을 얻기 위해 DCT 영역에서 두 영상을 블록 단위로 비교한다. 영상비교에 필요한 임계값 추출은 물체가 이미 지상에서 여러 픽셀과 블록에 연속적으로 존재하는 현상을 이용하여 계산된다. 비교 시 DCT 연산자체외 특징인 저주파로의 에너지 패킹현상을 이용하며 전체 DCT 계수들을 비교하지 않고 DC 성분을 포함한 일정 개수의 AC 성분만 사용한다.

  • This paper presents an efficient architecture of unified transform and quantization circuit for H.264/JPEG CODEC. The proposed unified transform circuit shares adders required for all transform operations. The proposed unified quantization circuit uses four multipliers. Our transform circuit and quantization circuit consist of 33,711 gates and 9,650 gates respectively. The maximum operating frequency is 100MHz with 130nm standard cells.

Median lifting optimization for lossy edge-dominant image compression

  • In JPEG2000, the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau (CDF) 9/7-tap wavelet filter is implemented using the conventional lifting scheme. On the other hand, this wavelet filter has two problems: the filter coefficients remain complex, and the conventional lifting scheme does not consider the image edges in the coding process. This paper proposes an effective lifting scheme to solve these problems. For this purpose, optimal 9/7-tap wavelet filters were designed in two steps. In the first step, the appropriate filter coefficients were selected. In the second step, a median operator was employed to consider the image edges. The experimental results with the median lifting scheme and the combination of filter optimization with the median lifting show that the proposed methods outperform the well-known CDF 9/7-tap wavelet filter of JPEG2000 on the edge-dominant images.

  • In this paper we present the design of a JPEG Encoder using SystemC Methodology Our methodology supports the efficient mapping of C/C++ functional descriptions directly into hardware. The use of C/C++ to model al1 parts of the system provides great flexibility and enables faster simulation compared to existing methodologies. The designer can estimate system performance and verify functional correctness of the designs using commonly available software compilers. A design flow in SystemC begins with an untimed description in C++, using a library of new data types useful for modeling hardware. The description can be compiled and simulated for functional correctness. Then, the design may be refined by adding interface specification and timing information, and again the timed description can be compiled with a standard C++ compiler, simulated, and debugged.

  • The Wavelet Transform has been applied in mathematics and computer sciences. Numerous studies have proven its advantages in image processing and data compression, and have made it a basic encoding technique in data compression standards like JPEG2000 and MPEG-4. Software implementations of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) appears to be the performance bottleneck in real-time systems in terms of performance. And hardware implementations are not flexible. Therefore, FPGA implementations of the DWT has been a topic of recent research. The goal of this thesis is to investigate of FPGA implementations of the DWT Processor for image compression applications.
