  • Detailed comparison of low-voltage scanning electron microscopy and electron holography techniques for two-dimensional (2D) dopant profiling was carried out with using the same multilayered p-n junction specimen. The dopant profiles obtained from two methods are in good agreement with each other. It demonstrates that reliability of dopant profile measurement can be increased through precise comparison of 2D profiles obtained from various microscopic techniques.

  • The glycome consists of all glycans (or carbohydrates) within a biological system, and modulates a wide range of important biological activities, from protein folding to cellular communications. The mining of the glycome for disease markers represents a new paradigm for biomarker discovery; however, this effort is severely complicated by the vast complexity and structural diversity of glycans. This review summarizes recent developments in analytical technology and methodology as applied to the fields of glycomics and glycoproteomics. Mass spectrometric strategies for glycan compositional profiling are described, as are potential refinements which allow structure-specific profiling. Analytical methods that can discern protein glycosylation at a specific site of modification are also discussed in detail. Biomarker discovery applications are shown at each level of analysis, highlighting the key role that glycoscience can play in helping scientists understand disease biology.

  • Monitoring toxicity levels in specific biological compartments is necessary to evaluate the ecotoxicological risk associated with soil environmental pollution. Gene expression, as potential biomarker, is increasingly used as rapid early warning systems in environmental monitoring and ecological risk assessment procedures. Various representative species are currently used for the purpose of assessing soil toxicity, however, investigations on toxicological assessments using endpoint based on gene-level have been limited. In this review, we will present the current trends in organisms and endpoints used in soil toxicity study and report gene expression related to toxicity using soil organism, and C. elegans as promising organisms for this approach.

  • High resolution dopant profiling in semiconductor devices has been an intense research topic because of its practical importance in semiconductor industry. Although several techniques have already been developed. it still requires very expensive tools to achieve nanometer scale resolution. In this study we demonstrated a novel dopant profiling technique with nanometer resolution using very simple setup. The newly developed technique measures the thermoelectric voltage generated in the contact point of the SPM probe tip and MOSFET surface instead of electrical signals widely adopted in previous techniques like Scanning Capacitance Microscopy. The spatial resolution of our measurement technique is limited by the size of contact size between SPM probe tip and MOSFET surface and is estimated to be about 10 nm in this experiment.

  • Food fermentations have enhanced human health since the dawn of time and remain a prevalent means of food processing and preservation. Due to their cultural and nutritional importance, many of these foods have been studied in detail using molecular tools, leading to enhancements in quality and safety. Furthermore, recent advances in high-throughput sequencing technology are revolutionizing the study of food microbial ecology, deepening insight into complex fermentation systems. This review provides insight into novel applications of select molecular techniques, particularly next-generation sequencing technology, for analysis of microbial communities in fermented foods. We present a guideline for integrated molecular analysis of food microbial ecology and a starting point for implementing next-generation analysis of food systems.

  • The brain is an organ that consists of various cell types. As our knowledge of the structure and function of the brain progresses, cell type-specific research is gaining importance. Together with advances in sequencing technology and bioinformatics, cell type-specific transcriptome studies are providing important insights into brain cell function. In this review, we discuss 3 different cell type-specific transcriptome analyses i.e., Laser Capture Microdissection (LCM), Translating Ribosome Affinity Purification (TRAP)/RiboTag, and single cell RNA-Seq, that are widely used in the field of neuroscience. • Kinomics is an emerging and promising approach for deciphering kinomes. Chemical kinomics is a discipline of chemical genomics that is also referred to as "chemogenomics", which is derived from chemistry and biology. Chemical kinomics has become a powerful approach to decipher complicated phosphorylation-based cellular signaling networks with the aid of small molecules that modulate kinase functions. Moreover, chemical kinomics has played a pivotal role in the field of kinase drug discovery as it enables identification of new molecular targets of small molecule kinase modulators and/or exploitation of novel functions of known kinases and has also provided novel chemical entities as hit/lead compounds. In this short review, contemporary chemical kinomics technologies such as activity-based protein profiling, T7 kinasetagged phages, kinobeads, three-hybrid systems, fluorescenttagged kinase binding assays, and chemical genomic profiling are discussed along with a novel allosteric Bcr-Abl kinase inhibitor (GNF-2/GNF-5) as a successful application of chemical kinomics approaches.

  • In order to image the distribution of permeability in granitic rocks, we carried out two-dimensional (2D) resistivity profiling, together with in-situ permeability tests, electrical logging of boreholes, and resistivity measurements of rock core samples in a laboratory. Based on the electrical logging and in-situ permeability data from boreholes, we obtained empirical equations which relate resistivity and permeability of the granitic rocks in the area studied. We then applied the empirical equation to a 2D resistivity section, to produce a 2D permeability section of the granitic rocks. In this paper, we present details of the field data and of the procedure for conversion from the resistivity section to a permeability section. The observed relationship between resistivity and permeability of the rocks is also discussed.

  • A gas chromatographic method is described for the determination of volatile free acids(VFAs) in body fluids. VFAs were trace enriched from body fluids by liquid-solid extraction using Chromosorb P as the solid sorbent and ether as the eluant. The enriched VFAs were injected in splitless injection mode onto a HP-20M fused silica capillary column. The flame ionization detector was used as the detector. The present method was applied to the profiling of VFAs in body fluids from patients suffering from the infectious disease, hepatitis. The VFAs concentrations were high in saliva of hepatitis patients and isobutyric acid detected in sera of hepatitis patients compared to healthy subjects.
