  • In this studies, joint time-frequency analysis techniques were applied to analyze ultrasonic signals in the degraded austenitic 316 stainless steels, to study the evolution of damage in these materials. It was demonstrated that the nonstationary characteristics of ultrasonic signals could be analyzed effectively by these methods. The WVD was more effective for analyzing the attenuation and frequency characteristics of the degraded materials through ultrasonic. It is indicated that the joint time-frequency analysis, WVD method, should also be useful in evaluating various damages and defects in structural members.

  • In this paper, a simplified ultrasonic CT system, which uses the information in three directions, that is, 90°, +45° and -45°about the inspection plane, is applied to the high strength steel, and the frequency analysis method for enhancing the C scan or CT image is developed. This frequency analysis method is based on the frequency response property of the material. By comparing the magnitudes in the frequency domain, the special frequency which shows a significant difference between the welded joint and base material was found and used to obtain a C scan or CT image. Experimental results for several kinds of specimens, having a welded joint by electron beam welding, a weld joint by arc welding, on a fatigue crack, showed that the obtained C scan or CT image has better resolution than the results of previous experiments using the maximum value of the received waveform.

  • Chassis part in automotive body is affected by fatigue load at driving on the ground. Universal joint on this part is influenced extremely by the fatigue load. Fatigue life, damage and natural frequency are analyzed at universal joint under nonuniform fatigue load. The york part at universal joint is shown with the maximum equivalent stress and displacement of 60.755 MPa and 0.21086 mm as strength analysis. The possible life in use in case of 'SAE bracket' is the shortest among the fatigue loading lives of 'SAE bracket', 'SAE transmission' and 'Sine Wave'. The damage at loading life of 'SAE transmission' is the least among 3 types. The frequency of damage in case of 'Sine Wave' is 0.7 with the least among 3 fatigue loading life types but this case brings the most possible damage as 80% at the average stress of 0. Natural vibration at this model is analyzed with the orders of 1'st to 5'th and maximum frequency is shown as 701.73 Hz at 5'th order. As the result of this study is applied by the universal joint on chassis part, the prevention on fatigue damage in automotive body and its durability are predicted.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Qualitative and semi-quantitative methods have been developed for TMJ sound classification, but the criteria presented are completely inhomogeneous. Thus, to develop more objective criteria for defining TMJ sounds, electroacoustical systems have been developed. We used Joint vibration analysis in the BioPAK system(Bioresearch Inc., Milwaukee, USA) as the electrovibratography. PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to examine the TMJ sounds with repect to frequency spectra patterns and the integral > 300 Hz /< 300 Hz ratios via six-months follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS. This study was done before and after the six-months recordings with 20 dental school students showed anterior disk displacement with reduction. Joint vibrations were analyzed using a mathematical technique known as the Fast Fourier Transform. RESULTS. In this study Group I and Group II showed varied integral > 300 /< 300 ratios before and after the six-months recordings. Also, by the comparative study between the integral > 300 /< 300 ratios and the frequency spectrums, it was conceivable that the frequency spectrums showed similar patterns at the same location that the joint sound occurred before and after the six-months recordings. while the frequency spectrums showed varied patterns at the different locations that the joint sound occurred before and after six-month recordings, it would possibly be due to the differences in the degree of internal derangement and/or in the shape of the disc. CONCLUSIONS. It is suggested that clinicians consider the integral > 300 /< 300 ratios as well as the frequency spectrums to decide the starting-point of the treatment for TMJ sounds.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of knee joint sound in frequency domain and classify the knee joint diseases. The spectral analysis of knee joint sounds was performed using LPC(Linear Predictive Coding) and Wigner-Ville distribution. Ten normal subjects and 5 patients with meniscal tearing were enrolled. Each subject was seated on a chair and underwent active knee flexion and extension for 60 seconds. Sampling frequency was 10kHz and electronic stethoscope and electro-goniometer were applied during the knee motion for data collection. The spectral analysis showed 3 peaks in both groups and the difference energy distribution in time-frequency domain. These results suggest that the diagnosis of knee joint pathology using the auscultation could be easier and more correct.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) signals, emanated during local failure of aluminum alloys, have been the subject of numerous investigations. It is well known that the characteristics of AE are strongly influenced by the previous thermal and mechanical treatment of the sample. Possible sources of AE during deformation have been suggested as the avalanche motion of dislocations, fracture of brittle particles, and debonding of these particles from the alloy matrix. The goal of the present study is to determine if AE occurring as the result of fatigue crack propagation could be evaluated by the joint time-frequency analysis method, short time Fourier transform (STFT), and Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD). The time-frequency analysis methods can be used to analyze non-stationary AE more effectively than conventional techniques. STFT is more effective than WVD in analyzing AE signals. Noise and frequency characteristics of crack openings and closures could be separated using STFT. The influence of various fatigue parameters on the frequency characteristics of AE signals was investigated.

  • In this study, annual maximum storm events are evaluated by applying the bivariate extremal distribution. Rainfall quantiles of probabilistic storm event are calculated using OR case joint return period, AND case joint return period and interval conditional joint return period. The difference between each of three joint return periods was explained by the quadrant which shows probability calculation concept in the bivariate frequency analysis. Rainfall quantiles under AND case joint return periods are similar to rainfall depths in the univariate frequency analysis. The probabilistic storm events overcome the primary limitation of conventional univariate frequency analysis. The application of these storm event analysis provides a simple, statistically efficient means of characterizing frequency of extreme storm event.

  • The modelling techniques of a center pillar-to-roof rail joint for low frequency vibration analysis are examined and some fundamental problems are addressed. To develop a simplified beam-spring model of the joint, the present work is focused on 1) practical shell modelling techniques and 2) joint spring stiffness estimation methods a practical model-updating method to match the calculated natural frequencies to the experimentally determine ones is proposed, particularly focusing on spot welding modelling. In joint spring modelling, the results from the model with one joint spring are compared with those from the model with three coupled springs. Finally, some fundamental problems in beam-spring modelling are addressed.
