  • Due to aging, adhesively bonded and riveted aircraft lap joints can contain distends, cracks around rivet holes, fatigue induced flaws, and corrosion. It is required for the safety of aircraft to inspect these defects through the whole region of mint in rapid speed. Bond quality or adhesively bonded and riveted aluminum lap splice joints is investigated using non-contact remote ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Non-contact ultrasonic tests are performed using laser generation and air-coupled transducer detection. A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and a periodic transmission mask are used to generate a selected Lamb mode. The Lamb wave is generated on one side of the lap splice joint, propagates along the plate, interacts with the joint and is detected on the other side by a micromachined air-coupled capacitance transducer. Analysis of recorded signals allows to evaluate the condition of the bond.

  • In these days, researches about underwater robots have been actively in progress for the purposes of ocean detection and resource exploration. Unlike general underwater robots such as ROV(Remotely Operated Vehicle) and AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) which have propellers, an articulated underwater robot which is called Crabster has been being developed in KORDI(Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute) with many cooperation organizations since 2010. The robot is expected to be able to walk and swim under the sea with its legs. Among many researching fields of this project, we are focusing on a swimming section. In order to find effective swimming locomotion for the robot, we approached this subject in terms of Biomimetics. As a model of optimized swimming organism in nature, diving beetles were chosen. In the paper, swimming motions of diving beetles were analyzed in viewpoint of robotics for applying them into the swimming motion of the robot. After modeling the kinematics of diving beetle through robotics engineering technique, we obtained swimming patterns of the one of living diving beetles, and then compared them with calculated optimal swimming patterns of a robot leg. As the first trial to compare the locomotion data of legs of the diving beetle with a robot leg, we have sorted two representative swimming patterns such as forwarding and turning. Experimental environment has been set up to get the motion data of diving beetles. The experimental equipment consists of a transparent aquarium and a high speed camera. Various swimming motions of diving beetles were recorded with the camera. After classifying swimming patterns of the diving beetle, we can get angular data of each joint on hind legs by image processing software, Image J. The data were applied to an optimized algorithm for swimming of a robot leg which was designed by robotics engineering technique. Through this procedure, simulated results which show trajectories of a robot leg were compared with trajectories of a leg of a diving beetle in desired directions. As a result, we confirmed considerable similarity in the result of trajectory and joint angles comparison.

  • This paper proposes a multi-view Wyner-Ziv Video coding scheme based on spatio-temporal adaptive estimation. The proposed algorithm is designed to search for a better estimated block with joint bi-directional motion estimation by introducing weights between temporal and spatial directions, and by classifying effectively the region of interest blocks, which is based on the edge detection and the synthesis, and by selecting the reference estimation block from the effective motion vector analysis. The proposed algorithm exploits the information of a single frame viewpoint and adjacent frame viewpoints, simultaneously and then generates adaptively side information in a variety of closure, and reflection regions to have a better performance. Through several simulations with multi-view video sequences, it is shown that the proposed algorithm performs visual quality improvement as well as bit-rate reduction, compared to the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method detecting foot motion capture in order to overlap in realtime foot's 3D virtual model from stereo cameras. In order to overlap foot's virtual model at the same position of the foot, a process of the foot's joint detection to regularly track the foot's joint motion is necessary, and accurate register both foot's virtual model and user's foot in complicated motion is most important problem in this technology. In this paper, we propose a dynamic registration using two types of marker groups. A plane information of the ground handles the relationship between foot's virtual model and user's foot and obtains foot's pose and location. Foot's rotation is predicted by two attached marker groups according to instep of center framework. Consequently, we had implemented our proposed system and estimated the accuracy of the proposed method using various experiments.

  • This paper propose image steganalysis scheme based on independence between parent and child subband on the multi-layer wavelet domain. The proposed method decompose cover and stego images into 12 subbands by applying 3-level Haar UWT(Undecimated Wavelet Transform), analyze statistical independency between parent and child subband. Because this independency is appeared more difference in stego image than in cover image, we can use it as feature to differenciate between cover and stego image. Therefore we extract 72D features by calculation first 3 order statistical moments from joint characteristic function between parent and child subband. Multi-layer perceptron(MLP) is applied as classifier to discriminate between cover and stego image. We test the performance of proposed scheme over various embedding rates by the LSB, SS, BSS embedding method. The proposed scheme outperforms the previous schemes in detection rate to existence of hidden message as well as exactness of discrimination.

  • The monitoring and measurement of the motion of a human joint is very important in screening for degenerative brain diseases and tracking the rehabilitation process. Since there are various medical fields to benefit from angular motion measurement, the necessity for monitoring of human joint movement is increasing. In this study, the optical sensor is composed of a light emission unit with a red LED and an optical fiber, and a reception unit with an arrangement of three photodiodes. The angular detection range was widened with the use of multiple photodiodes and the developed algorithm. The result will be useful for designing an effective angular sensor with low cost and small size.

  • This paper proposes an improved steganalysis method to detect the existence of secret message. Firstly, we magnify the small stego noise by multiplying the speckle noise to a given image and then we estimate the denoised image by using the soft thresholding method. Because the noises are not perfectly eliminated, some noises exist in the estimated cover image. If the given image is the cover image, then the remained noise will be very small, but if it is the stego image, the remained noise will be relatively large. The parent-child relationship in the wavelet domain will be slighty broken in the stego image. From this characteristic, we extract the joint statistical moments from the difference image between the given image and the denoised image. Additionally, four statistical moments are extracted from the denoised image for the proposed steganalysis method. All extracted features are used as the input of MLP(multilayer perceptron) classifier. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme outperforms previous methods in terms of detection rates and accuracy.

  • At coverage boundaries of cellular systems including the recent WiBro standard which operate with full frequency reuse for increased spectral efficiency, interference signals from the base stations(BS) of adjacent cells degrade the receiver performance. In this paper, a detection method for multiple-antenna mobile stations(MS) is proposed for downlink performance improvement at coverage boundaries of cellular systems. For the performance verification, we obtain the probability density function(pdf) of the effective signal-to-interference and noise ratio(SINR) according to the variation of the interference signals from adjacent cells as well as the number of MS antennas, and calculate the transmission efficiency. We also verify the performance of proposed method with simulation results, to demonstrate a significant performance improvement is achieved over the maximal ratio combining(MRC) and spatial demultiplexing(SD) methods in terms of the effective SINR and the spectral efficiency.

  • Purpose: Although previous studies on the screw-home movement (SHM) for autopsy specimen and walking of living persons conducted, the possibility of acquiring SHM based on inertial measurement units received little attention. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of measuring SHM for the non-weighted bearing using a micro-electro-mechanical system-based wearable motion capture system (MEMSS). Methods: MEMSS and camera-based motion analysis systems were used to obtain kinematic data of the knee joint. The knee joint moved from the flexion position to a fully extended position and then back to the start point. The coefficient of multiple correlation and the difference in the range of motion were used to assess the waveform similarity in the movement measured by two measurement systems. Results: The waveform similarity in the sagittal plane was excellent and the in the transverse plane was good. Significant differences were found in the sagittal plane between the two systems (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the transverse plane between the two systems (p>0.05). Conclusion: The SHM during the passive motion without muscle contraction in the non-weighted bearing appeared in the entire range. We thought that the MEMSS could be easily applied to the acquisition of biomechanical data on the knee related to physical therapy.
