An elbow orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator has been developed to assist and enhance upper limb movements and has been examined for the effectiveness. The effectiveness of the elbow orthosis was examined by comparing muscular activities during alternate dumbbell curl exercises with and without the orthosis. The subjects participated in the experiment were younger adults in their twenties. The subjects were instructed to perform dumbbell curl motion in a sitting position with and without orthosis in turn and a dynamometer was used to measure elbow joint torque outputs in an isovelocity mode. The measurements were done with four various dumbbell loads: 0 kg, 1 kg, 3 kg, and 5 kg. The orthosis was pneumatically actuated and controlled in a passive mode. The most comfortable air pressure to the pneumatic actuator was determined to be 0.294MPa. Electromyography(EMG) was also measured during curl exercises. The muscles of interest were biceps brachii(BB), triceps brachii(TB), brachioradialis(Bo), and flexor carpi ulnaris(FCU) in the upper limbs. The experimental results showed that the muscular activities themselves significantly reduced with elbow orthosis on in performing similar activities without orthosis. As a result of this experiment, the effectiveness of the developed upper limb orthosis was confirmed and the level of assistance was quantified.
This study investigates the development process of Mt. Deok on Bigeum Island, Shinan, on the basis of geomorphological and geological analyses. K-Ar dating was carried out on two samples of the acidic lapilli tuff developed in the study area, and the obtained K-Ar ages are $70.4{\pm}1.4$ and $76.9{\pm}1.5Ma$, which correspond to the Late Cretaceous (Campanian). Mt. Deok is surrounded by rock cliff, and various weathering microtopographic features, such as tafoni, tor and gnamma, are developed. Tafoni with diverse morphologic types is the most dominant feature, indicative of intense salt weathering. Geological characteristics such as porous tuff and joint have played an important role in the development of tafoni and rock cliff. Geomorphology and geology of Mt. Deok reflect paleoenvironmental change and interaction between human and nature in the coastal area.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the magnitude of mandibular rotational torque movements in subjects with TMJ sounds, and to analyse correlation between quantitative characteristics of TMJ sounds and mandibular rotational torque movement. Twenty dental college students with TMJ clicking and twenty students without any TMD signs and symptoms were examined by mean of SonoPak and Rotate program of BioPAK system(Bioresearch Inc. MilWaukee, wisconsin, USA) in this study. Mandibular rotational torque movements were recorded and analysed during maximum mouth opening, protrusion, and lateral excursion in frontal and horizontal planes. The obtained results were as follows: 1. On maximum mouth opening, mandibular rotational angle and distance of clicking group were significantly greater than those of control group in frontal plane. (P<0.05). 2. During maximum mouth opening closing, maximum mandibular rotational angle and distance of clicking group were significantly greater than those of control group in frontal plane. (P<0.01). 3. On protrusion, mandibular rotational angle and distance of clickin group were significantly greater than those of control group in horizontal plane. (P<0.05). 4. On lateral excursion, there was no significant difference in mandibular rotational angle and distance between clicking group and control group in frontal and horizontal planes. 5. There were significant correlations between peak amplitude of TMJ sounds and maximum mandibular rotational distance during maximum mouth opening (r=-.481) and mandibular rotational distance on maximum mouth opening (r=-.455) in horizontal plane. 6. There were significant correlations between Above 300/(0-300)Hz ratio of TMJ sounds and mandibular rotational angle (r=-.499) and distance (r=-.457) on maximum mouth opening in frontal plane.

In this study, the behavior characteristics of bent pile structures with varying cross-section was examined through the measured results of field load test. A framework for determining the bending stress is calculated based on the stresses in the circumference of the pile using 3D finite element analysis. It is found that the bending stress near the pile-column joint changes rapidly and fracture zones occurs easily at variable cross-sections in bent pile structures. Also, the optimized column-pile diameter ratio was analyzed through the relationship between the column-pile diameter ratio and lateral crack load ratio. Based on this study, the optimized column-pile diameter ratio can be obtained near the inflection point of the curve between the column-pile diameter ratio and lateral crack load ratio. Therefore, a present study by considering the optimized variable cross-section condition would be improved bent pile structures design.

In this paper, we propose a method that automatically detects organs having similar appearances in medical images by learning both context and appearance features. Since only the appearance feature is used to learn the classifier in most existing detection methods, detection errors occur when the medical images include multiple organs having similar appearances. In the proposed method, based on the probabilities acquired by the appearance-based classifier, new classifier containing the context feature is created by iteratively learning the characteristics of probability distribution around the interest voxel. Furthermore, both the efficiency and the accuracy are improved through 'region based voting scheme' in test stage. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we detect femur and tibia which have similar appearance from SKI10 knee joint dataset. The proposed method outperformed the detection method only using appearance feature in aspect of overall detection performance.

In this paper, the dynamic crawling of a five-bar planar mechanism is investigated. One complete cycle of the crawling selected in this study consists of four different steps, i) sliding at one contact point between the mechanism and the ground, ii) changing its configuration without sliding at two contact points, iii) sliding at the other contact point, and iv) again changing its configuration without sliding at two contact points. In this type of crawling, the crawling mechanism maintains the shape of the parallel structure throughout a complete crawling cycle. The modeling algorithm for serial manipulators proposed by M. Thomas and et al.[1] is employed by introducing imaginary joints and links which represent the contact interfaces between the one end of the mechanism and the ground, while the other end of the mechanism is regarded as an end-effector of the imaginary serial manipulator which treats the reaction force and torque at the contact point as external forces. Then, a complete cycle of dynamic crawling of the mechanism is investigated through various computer simulations. The simulation result show that the stable crawling characteristics of the mechanism could be secured when the proper configurations depending on specified frictional constraints are met.
The purposes of present study were to determine the major check-points of golf swing from the review of previous studies, and to suggest additional information on the teaching theory of golf. The golf swing motion of 6 male and female elite university golf players were filmed with 16mm Locam II high speed cameras at the speed of 200f/s, and variables such as time, displacement, angle, velocity were calculated and analyzed by 3D Cinematography using DLT method. The results were: 1. Differences were shown in the ratio of weight distribution on the feet, cocking angle, take-back velocity, club-head velocity at impact depending upon the physical characteristics and club used for swing. 2. Time for the down-swing and impact were $0.27{\sim}0.29s$ in men and $0.29{\sim}0.32s$ in women, which was 1/3 of the time for the back-swing. Women showed longer total swing time than men because of longer time in back-swing, follow-through and finish. 3. Men showed larger range of motion in shoulder and knee joints than women, on the other hand women showed larger range of motion in hip joint than men. 4. Cocking motion and right elbow flexion were occurred at the top of back-swing and cocking release was occurred at the moment of impact. Maximum rotations of shoulder and hip joints were found between the top of back-swing and down-swing phase. 5. Women showed lower back-swing velocity than men, and men showed higher club velocity(men: $38.2{\sim}38.6m/s$, women: $35.1{\sim}36.4m/s$) than women.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among isometric and isokinetic muscle strength, lean body mass(LBM) and bone mineral density(BMD) in the elderly. Eleven males(age, 70.27${\pm}$5.78yr; height, 167.36${\pm}$6.68 cm; weight, 68.34${\pm}$8.23 kg) and thirteen female(age, 69.77${\pm}$4.13yr; height, 152.80${\pm}$4.45 cm; weight, 56.86${\pm}$7.40 kg) participated in this study. In all subjects, LBM and BMD segments was measured by using Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry(DEXA, Lunar DPS-DM, U.S.A.). Maximum isometric and isokinetic muscle strength of flexion and extension at the knee and elbow, ankle, trunk joints were measured by using an isokinetic dynamometer(CON-TREX(R) Multi Joint Testing Module, Switzerland). The results of this study showed that isometric and isokinetic muscle strength was significantly higher in extension than flexion. In the male and female, hamstring to quadriceps strength ratio(H:Q ratio) was increased as contraction velocity increased. BMD was correlated significantly with trunk extension in the male, but not in the female. LBM was correlated significantly in the male and female with knee extension strength. This study suggests that in the elderly muscle strength training program should put more weight on extensor muscles of the body.
The characteristics and production mechanism of residual stress generated by multi-pass welding of the steel pipe were elucidated from the results of three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis. When the steel pipe was jointed by multi-pass welding, the stress components of circumferential direction and radial direction near welded joints on the inner surface and the outer surface of the pope were tensile. The stress component of axial direction on the inner surface was tensile and on the outer surface was compressive. On the other hands, the production mechanism of residual stress generated by multi-pass welding of the steel pipe was investigated. Residual stress generated by welding of the steel pipe was investigated not only by the thermal history but also by geometrical shape. Then, the generality of the production mechanism of residual stress generated by multi-pass welding was confirmed.
This study was undertaken to verify various relations between dental health belief and related behaviors in mothers and children. Data for this study were obtained by 264 pairs of 1st and 3rd grade elementary school children and their mothers by self developed questionnaire, The questionnaires are made on the general socio-economical characteristics, the oral health knowledge and the behaviors relative to the oral health and oral health education as to how mothers implement the oral health related activities for their children, while for the children, the questionnaires have been measured relative to the oral health beliefs and health behaviors for the children. The obtained results have shown that mothers become with more ages, the usefulness to prevent children's oral diseases becomes lower, and as much as mothers have higher education level, the sensitivity relative to the oral diseases has been measured low. To the degree that the students live well in economical respect, it has been found that they placed more importance on the oral health. As much as the number of mothers tooth brushing becomes made more in a day, the tooth brushing of the children becomes more that much, and also has higher level of oral health beliefs. The number of children to see dentists has been found high, and to the extent of increasing frequency of visiting dental clinics. As the number of mothers tooth brushing education becomes made more frequent for the children. Also, as mothers put more restriction on the sugar intakes by the children, they placed higher importance on the oral health for their children. In conclusion oral health behavior in mothers' influence on dental health belief of their children, it has been reviewed necessary to activate more the mother-children joint oral health education and oral health projects that mothers and children take part together, as well as to study more in accurate and systematic approaches through more comprehensive and various subjects and elements further in the future.
