From 2006 to 2008, the stem rot of Petunia hybrida Vilm. caused by Sclerotium rolfsii occurred sporadically at Jinju city in Gyeongsangnam-do. The typical symptom is water-soaking, brown on the stem and rotting, wilting and blighting. The infected plants were mostly died. White mycelial mats were spread over lesions, and then sclerotia were formed on stem and near soil line. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, $1{\sim}3\;mm$ in size and white to brown in color. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation was at $30^{\circ}C$ on PDA and the hyphal width ranged from 4 to $8{\mu}m$. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to P. hybrida, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report on the stem rot of P. hybrida caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.
Purpose: This study was designed to describe outcomes of pain management, to identify pain intensity, pain management and barriers to pain management, and to test correlation among the variables in cancer patients who are registered in public health centers. Methods: By using a descriptive survey design, 3 instruments were used to collect data: the Numeric Rating Scale for pain, the Barriers Questionnaire-Korean version, and a one-item self-report tool about patient satisfaction. A sample of 190 patients with cancer was recruited from a public health center. Results: The mean rating for pain during the past 24 hours was mild and the mean score of barriers to pain management was 3.20. Patients were satisfied with pain management but they also had concerns it. A negative correlation was found among pain severity, pain relief and satisfaction of pain management. However, there was not significant correlation between the patient-related barriers to pain management and other variables. Conclusion: These results suggest that the intervention for cancer patients should focus not only on patient-related barriers to pain management, but also address health-care system related barriers.
Rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred on pears (Pyrus serotina) in the Jinju City Agricultural Products Wholesale Market in Korea from 2004 to 2005. The infection usually started from wounds due to cracking at harvest time. The lesions started as water-soaked, rapidly softened, then gradually expanded. The mycelia grew vigorously on the surface of the fruits and formed stolons. Colonies on potato dextrose agar at $25^{\circ}C$ were white cottony to brownish black. Sporangia were globose, black and $90{\sim}120\;{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiophores were light brown and $480{\sim}2600{\times}12{\sim}18\;{mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were globose to oval, brownish, streaked, and $8{\sim}14{\times}6{\sim}10\;{\mu}m$ in size. Columella were light brownish gray, hemispherical and $70{\sim}80\;{\mu}m$ in size. On the basis of these symptoms, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity tests on host plants, the fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vuill. This is the first report of rhizopus soft rot on pear (P. serotina) caused by R. stolonifer in Korea.
The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship of depression, fatigue and quality of life (QOL) in middle-aged adults in Jinju city. This survey was conducted from October to November, 2010 and 230 responses from the survey were used. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The average score of the participants' depression was $13.16{\pm}8.26$ out of 60. the average fatigue score was $21.46{\pm}4.79$ out of 44. The average QOL score was $85.90{\pm}9.49$ out of 130. Among general characteristic of the participants level of QOL was statistically significant for gender, educational level, exercise. There was a significantly corrleation among depression, fatigue and QOL. The results revealed that depression, educational level, exercise were the significant predictors to affect the QOL in middle-aged adults. Low level of depression, higher educational background, and active exercise were closely correlated with QOL. To improve QOL in middle-aged adulthoods for the community, the programs which include lowering depression, encouraging exercise should be designed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Tai Chi exercise on muscle strength, grip strength, flexibility, pain, depression and self-efficacy in patients with osteoarthritis. Method: With a quasi-experimental design, 46 persons with osteoarthritis were assigned into an experimental group (n=22) or a control group (n=24). Muscle strength, grip strength, flexibility, pain, depression and self-efficacy were measured both before and after the exercise. Data were analyzed with SPSS WIN using descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANCOVA. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 68 years in the experimental group and 64 years in the control group. After controlling for age and pre-test outcome variables, muscle strength scores (F=-14.8, p= .00), grip strength scores (Rt: F=8.40, p= .01), and self-efficacy (F=47.3, p= .00) improved more in the experimental group than the control group. Joint pain scores (F=15.0, p= .00) and depression scores (F=14.7, p= .00) decreased in the experimental group. Conclusion: Tai Chi exercise is likely to be an effective nursing intervention to improve muscle strength, grip strength, and self-efficacy and reduce pain and depression for patients with osteoarthritis.
Purpose: The present study was conducted to identify the relations between self-esteem. self-care and life satisfaction in the home-dwelling elderly. Methods: The subjects were 106 persons aged over 65 in J city. Data were collected from April to June 2005 by a questionnaire survey. The instruments used in this study are the self-esteem scale developed by Rosenberg(1965), the self-care scale by Hwang (2000) and the life-satisfaction scale by Choi (1986). Data were analyzed through t-test, ANOVA. least significant difference, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise regression analysis using SPSS-Win 10.0. Results: Self-esteem and self-care were in a positive correlation with each other (r=.464, p=.000). Self-care and life-satisfaction showed a significant correlation with each other (r=.222 p=.031), and a significant correlation was found between self-esteem and life-satisfaction (r=.506, p=.000). The most significant predictors influencing life-satisfaction were self-esteem, self-care and perceived health condition, and the three factors accounted for 47.7% of variance in life satisfaction in the home-dwelling elderly. Conclusion: These results suggest that self-esteem, self-care and life-satisfaction can be important factors the quality of life of the elderly in long-term care. Therefore nurses can plan nursing interventions to promote self-esteem, self-care and life satisfaction of the home-dwelling elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aquatic exercise on pain, fatigue, physical fitness, disability in ADL, and psychological variables in women with arthritis. Methods: With a quasi-experimental design, 46 women who has arthritis were assigned into an experimental group (n=23), or a control group (n=23). Data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN using descriptive statistics, t-test and ANCOVA. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 60.9 years in the experimental group and 59.8 years in the control group. The pretest scores of the outcome variables were similar between the two groups except fatigue and waist flexibility. After controlling fatigue and waist flexibility, the experimental group showed more improvement than the control group in Rt shoulder flexibility score (F=4.36, p=.04), sit-up score (F=32.34, p=.00), and muscle strength score (F=30.78, p=.00). The score of disability in ADL decreased in the experimental group (F=5.49, p=.02). The depression score decreased in the experimental group (F=12.01, p=.00), and self-efficacy was improved more than the other variables(F=8.88, p=.00). Conclusion: Aquatic exercise is likely to be an effective nursing intervention to improve physical fitness, to reduce pain, fatigue, and disability in ADL, and to enhance psychological functions in women with arthritis.
Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of foot reflexology on pain and depression of middle-aged women with Osteoarthritis Method: The subjects were 41 osteoarthritis patients resided in the Jinju city from March to May, 2005. The foot reflexology was applied to the experimental group 3 times a week for 4 weeks, 30 minutes eachs. To examine the relative efficacy of the intervention, t-test, paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA were conducted. Results: After foot reflexology, the subjects in experimental group showed significant improvement in pain (F=155.77, p=.000) and depression ((F=20.00, p=.000). Conclusion: The results suggest that the foot reflexology is effective in relieving of pain and depression. Therefore, it is necessary to develop foot reflexology as an independent nursing intervention.
Purpose: This study was done to develop and test the effectiveness in late school-aged children of a healthy lifestyle education program for cancer prevention. Methods: Participants were 26 students in the sixth grade of N elementary school in J City (experimental group) and 25 students in the sixth grade of D elementary school with same educational conditions (control group). The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data collection and execution of the study were carried out from March 10 to May 19, 2011. For the experimental treatment, 7 weekly sessions of the healthy lifestyle education program for cancer prevention were given by the researcher. Posttest was done immediately following the conclusion of the program and 4 weeks later. Frequencies, percentages, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and paired t-test with SPSS WIN 18.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: Perceived barriers, perceived self-efficacy, activity related effect and family support significantly influenced cancer prevention knowledge and increases in healthy life styles. Conclusion: Results indicate that, as this program for cancer prevention was effective in increasing healthy lifestyle practices in these children, there is a need to further develop, test and implement programs in all schools.
Purpose: Optimism is an important psychological variable that functions positively in stress adaptation process. The purpose of this study was to identify either a mediating or moderating effect of optimism in the relationship between stress and well-being among mothers of children with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A sample of 109 mothers of children with diabetes mellitus was recruited in a tertiary hospital in B city and they completed self-reported questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis models were used to test the mediating and moderating effects of optimism in the relationship between stress and well-being. Results: The results of the multiple and hierarchical regression analysis showed that the role of optimism was examined a partial mediator of the relation between stress and well-being, not a moderator. Increased stress was associated with decreasing optimism and well-being, and increased optimism predicted increased well-being among mothers of children with diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Optimism is more likely to play a role as mediator, rather than as a moderator. This finding suggests the importance of optimism in improving the well-being of mothers of children with diabetes mellitus.
