Jets of compact radio sources are highly relativistic and Doppler boosted, making studies of their intrinsic properties difficult. Observed brightness temperatures can be used to study the intrinsic physical properties of the relativistic jets. The intrinsic properties of relativistic jets depend on inner jet models. We aimed to observationally test the inner jet models. The very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) cores of compact radio sources are optically thick at a given frequency. The distance of the core from the central engine is inversely proportional to the frequency. Under the equipartition condition between the magnetic field energy and particle energy densities, the absolute distance of the VLBI core can be predicted. We compiled the brightness temperatures of VLBI cores at various radio frequencies of 2, 8, 15, and 86~GHz. The brightness temperatures in the rest frame were investigated in the sub-parsec regions of the compact radio sources. From the vicinity of the central engine, the brightness temperatures increased slowly and then rose with steeper slope, indicating that the Lorentz factor increases along the jet. This implies that the jets are accelerated in the (sub-)parsec regions from the central engine.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jets with corrugated nozzle and wake generation plate. Three different shapes of corrugated nozzle and five different shapes of wake generation plate were tested to improve the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jet. Heat transfer coefficients were obtained by using transient method based on the liquid crystal thermography. The effects of corrugated nozzle and wake generation plate on the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jets were discussed in detail. The results showed that both the corrugated nozzle and the wake generation plate improved the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jet. Especially, heat transfer coefficients around stagnation region of impinging jets were highly increased.

This paper deals with experimental investigation of active flow control via synthetic jets using an unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) planform. Fourteen arrays of synthetic jets, mounted along both leading edges, were fully or partially activated to increase aerodynamic efficiency and reduce pitch-up moment. The measurements were carried out using a six-component external balance, a pressure scanner, and tuft flow visualization. It was observed that aerodynamic efficiency (L/D) and pitching moment were clearly affected by the location of jets. In particular, inboard and outboard actuation could effectively increase L/D. Moreover, inboard actuation showed a reduction in the pitch-up, even more than that generated by the full actuation. These results suggest that inboard actuation not only effectively increases L/D but also reduces the pitch-up using only a few actuators.
When the water jets heated up to the saturation temperature at a high line pressure are sprayed into a reduced (atmospheric) pressure through an air-assisted nozzle, the jets experience sudden exposure into a reduced pressure, get superheated and produce steam bubbles while atomization processes of jets are taking place. This process is called flash atomization. In this study the flash atomization of superheated water jets assisted by air has been studied. Sprays with flash atomization have been photographed at various water and air flow rates and water superheats. It has been found that the spray angle with flash atomization increases with water superheat and water flow rate but decreases with air flow rate. The degree of change of spray angle has been analyzed and correlated as a function of superheat, air and water flow rates.

In this study, the mixing process of two-phase flow generated by two jets with height difference is analyzed. The primary jet is jetted on the condition of the state mixed pulverized solid particles with air. The height difference between the main jet and the secondary jet is changed into three kinds(0, 32.5, 47.5mm). The velocity vector field, concentration field and turbulent properties of solid particles are measured by using 3-Dimensional Particles Dynamics Analyzer. As the height difference of two jets through the two nozzles increases, the solid particle recirculation zone and the dense zone in the combustion chamber become large. The solid particle concentration at the center of the combustion chamber gets dense because the particle velocity remains slow due to the existence of the solid particle recirculation zone. The particle concentration in the combustion chamber can also be influenced by the hight difference of two jets.
Characteristics of lifted flames in axisymmetric laminar coflow jets have been investigated experimentally. Approximate solutions for velocity and concentration accounting virtual origins have been proposed for coflow jets to analyze the behavior of liftoff height. From the measurement of Rayleigh intensity for probing the concentration field of propane, the validity of the approximate solutions was substantiated. From the images of OH PLIF and CH chemiluminescence and the Rayleigh concentration measurement, it has been shown that the positions of maximum luminosity in direct photography coincide with the tribrachial points, which were located along the stoichiometric contour. The liftoff height in coflow jets was found to increase highly nonlinearly with jet velocity and was sensitive to coflow velocity.
I discuss implications of gamma-ray emission from blazars based on electron acceleration by shock waves in a relativistic jet. The number spectrum of electrons turns out to be a broken power law; while at low energies the power law index has a universal value of 2, at high energies it steepens to an index of 3 because of strong radiative cooling. This spectrum can basically reproduce the observed spectral break between X-rays and gamma-rays. I show that energetics of relativistic jets can be well explained by this model. I estimate physical quantities of the relativistic jets by comparing the prediction with observations. The results show that the jets are particle dominated and are comprised of electron-positron pairs. A connection between gamma-ray emission and radiation drag is also discussed.

In confined coaxial jets, the flow-mixing characteristics depend on the initial conditions at the nozzle outlet such as velocity ratio and nozzle radius ratio. In this study, nozzle ratio(inner/outer) was 0.3. Longitudinal axial velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress were measured by CTA. Measurements were made from the duct inlet to the region where similarity solution could exist. This study investigated flow charicteristics according to the variation of similitude parameter which was derived from the theory of Craya-Cutet. The range of similarity region depends on the variation of the similitude patameter. The form factor obtained from the axial velocity profile in the similarity region was constant. The higher the similitude parameter, the wider the spread rate of the jets. Due to this fact, the similarity conditions developed more quickly and the region where the similarity holds became narrow. Present experimental data confirmed the validity of Craya-Curtet theory.
The flow field structures of two interacting parallel supersonic free jets are studied by flow visualization using planar laser-induced fluorescence of NO seeded in nitrogen gas. The experiments are carried out for several distances between two orifice centers and for various ratios of the pressure in the reservoir to that in the expansion chamber. The flow fields are visualized mainly on the plane including two jet centerlines and its characteristic shock system, especially a cell structure formed secondly by interaction of two jets, are analyzed. The positions of the normal shock depending on the pressure ratios are also compared.

In the present paper, flow and heat transfer characteristics of confined impinging slot jets have been numerically investigated using a SIMPLE-based segregated SUPG finite element method. For laminar jets, it is shown that the skin friction coefficient obtained from the present SUPG formulation approaches the grid-independent Galerkin solution inducing negligible false diffusion in the flow field when a moderate number of grid points are used. For turbulent jets, the k-$\omega$turbulence model is adopted. The streamwise mean velocity and the heat transfer coefficient respectively agree very well with existing experimental data within limited ranges of parameters.
