  • The implementation of gelled propellants systems offers high performance, energy management of liquid propulsion, storability, and high density impulse of solid propulsion. The present study focused on the macroscopic spray characteristics of liquid sheets formed by triplet impinging jets of non-Newtonian liquids which are mixed by Carbopol 941 0.5%wt. The results are compared to experiments conducted on spray images which formed by triplet impinging jets concerning with airassist effect at center orifice. When gel propellants are injected by doublet impinging jets at low pressure and high pressure, closed rim pattern shape appeared by polymeric effect from molecular force and showed inactive atomization characteristics, because of extensional viscosity related by restriction of atomization process and breakup time delay of turbulence transition. As increasing mass flow rate of the air(increasing GAR), spray breakup level is also increased.

  • the present study, the addresses the hysteric phenomenon of under-expanded jets with a help of a computational fluid dynamics methods. The under-expanded jets of both dry and moist air have been employed to the transient processes for the pressure ratio. It is known that under-expanded air jet produced during the process of increase in pressure ratio behaves different from the reducing process, leading to a hysteric phenomenon of under-expanded jet. It is also known that moist air jet significantly reduces the hysteric phenomenon found in the dry air jet, and that non-equilibrium condensation which occurs in the under-expanded moist air jet is responsible for these findings.

  • Recently a considerable interest is being concentrated on industrial applications of supersonic Coanda wall jets, but the flow physics are not still understood well. It is of practical importance to evaluate the effectiveness of supersonic Coanda wall jet devices fer such industrial purposes. In the present work, experiments and computations were performed to Set a better understanding of the supersonic Coanda jet physics. The experiments were made using a small blow-down wind tunnel. The operating pressure ratio and the Coanda surface configuration were changed to investigate their influences on the wall jet flows. Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes computations were performed using a TVD finite volume scheme to effectively capture the important wave structures of supersonic Coanda jet flows. Both experimental and computational results showed several important hysterical features of the supersonic Coanda wall jets; the attachment and detachment of supersonic Coanda jet were strongly dependent on the change processes of the operating pressure ratio and the detailed flow configuration.

  • Stabilization mechanism of lifted flame in the near field of coflow jets has been investigated experimentally and numerically for methane fuel diluted with nitrogen. Lifted flames were observed only in the near field of coflow jets until blowout occurred in the normal gravity condition. To elucidate the stabilization mechanism for the stationary lifted flames in the near field of coflow jets for the diluted methane having the Schmidt number smaller than unity, the behaviors of the stationary lifted flame in microgravity and unsteady propagation phenomena were investigated numerically at various conditions of jet velocity. It has been founded that the buoyancy plays an important role for flame stabilization of lifted flame in normal gravity and the stabilization mechanism is due to the significant variation of the propagation speed of lifted flame edge compared to the local flow velocity at the edge.

  • The nature of feed gas is essential for the active species formed in the nonthermal plasma jets, which would induce various biological phenomena. We investigated the different physiological effects of atmospheric pressure soft-plasma jets on Esherichia coli and blood cells according to the feed gas. Cell death rate, growth curve, membrane molecular changes and induced genes were examined. The relationship between cellular reactions and active species generated by discharge will be discussed.

  • We have constructed the foundations to a series of theoretical diagnostic methods to probe the jet phenomenon in young stars as observed at various optical forbidden lines. We calculate and model in a self-consistent manner the physical and radiative processes which arise within an inner disk-wind driven magneto centrifugally from the circumstellar accretion disk of a young sun-like star. Comparing with real data taken at high angular resolution, our approach will provide the basis of systematic diagnostics for jets and their related young stellar objects, to attest the emission mechanisms of such phenomena. This work can help bring first-principle theoretical predictions to confront actual multi-wavelength observations, and will bridge the link between many very sophiscated numerical simulations and observational data. Analysis methods discussed here are immediately applicable to new high-resolution data obtained with HST and Adaptic Optics.

  • Breakup lengths of circular and elliptical liquid jets in a subsonic crossflow were experimentally studied. Two circular-shaped and four elliptical-shaped plain-orifice injectors, which had different aspect ratios and orifice length to diameter ratios, were used to provide various liquid jet conditions such as steady, cavitation, and hydraulic flip. By varying the injection pressure drop from 1 bar to 6 bar, spray images were taken using a shadowgraph technique. Breakup lengths were measured and analyzed. As the aspect ratio in orifices increased, liquid column breakup lengths normalized by the equivalent diameter were reduced irrespectively of the switching of the major or minor axis to the crossflow. It was also found that when hydraulic flip developed inside the orifice, x-directional breakup lengths more decreased for both circular and elliptical liquid jets.

  • The flow characteristics of unventilated dual impinging jets were experimentally investigated. Two nozzles with an aspect ratio of 20 were separated by 6 nozzle widths. The Reynolds number based on nozzle width and nozzle exit velocity was set to 5,000. A Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure turbulent velocity components. It was found that, when an impingement plate was installed in the converging region, there was a stagnation region in the inner area between nozzles. However, when it was installed in the combined region, both jets were merged and collided into the plate, showing single-jet characteristics. In addition, at a dual impinging jet, as the distance between a nozzle and an impingement plate decreased, the spanwise turbulent intensity at the plate increased.

  • An experimental study has been peformed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jets with multiple orifice nozzles. Four different shapes of multiple orifice nozzle were tested to improve the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jet. Heat transfer coefficients were obtained by using transient and steady method based on the liquid crystal thermography, and both methods showed very similar results. The effects of multiple orifice nozzles on the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jets were discussed in detail. The results showed that multiple orifice nozzles improved the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jet. Especially, heat transfer coefficients around stagnation region of impinging jets were highly increased.

  • An experimental study on the spray characteristics of aerated-liquid jets discharged from effervescent injectors to a subsonic crossflow was conducted to investigate effects of a gas to liquid mass ratio (GLR) and a ratio of the orifice length to the diameter (L/d). The present effervescent injectors consist of a plain orifice injector and an aerator. To analyze breakup length and spray trajectory, instantaneous spray images were taken by a high speed camera. As the GLR increased, the spray penetration became higher under the same liquid mass flow rate and the breakup length became shorter due to the bubble expansion or the annular liquid film breakup. To predict the spray trajectory of two-phase flow jets into the crossflow, the homogeneous and the separated flow models were compared.
