  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the turbulent flow characteristics from on oblique impingement surface to an plane jet at the jet Reynolds number(Re based on the nozzle width) $3{\times}10^4$ The jet mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles have been measured along the impingement surface by hot-wire anemometer. The nozzle-to-plate distance(H/B) ranged from 2 to 10 and the oblique angle (a) from 45 to 90 degree. Also the secondary peak of the turbulent intensity was observed at H/B=4 S/B 5 and a=90 degree. It has been found that the stagnation point shifted toward the minor flow region as the oblique angle decreased and the position of the stagnation point nearly coincided with that of the maximum turbulent intensity.

  • The jet impingement cooling characteristics are investigated experimentally. The study is motivated by the potential application of local hot spot cooling by means of the vortex tube. The purposes of this research are to examine the effect of the nozzle-block spacing and flow rate. The results of jet through vortex tube is compared with ones of circular Jet. Flow visualization by the smoke-wire technique is also performed to investigate the flow structure. As the nozzle-block spacing is increased and flow rate decreased, the cooling effect of the Jet through the vortex tube decreases mere remarkably than that of the circular jet. So the cooling effect for the jet through the vortex tube is higher than that for the circular jet at $H/D{\leq}3$, $Q{\geq}10m^3/h$.

  • Steam jets ejected from a rupture zone of high energy pipes may cause damage to adjacent structures. This event could lead to more serious accidents in nuclear power plants. Therefore, to prevent serious accidents, high energy pipes of nuclear power plants are designed according to the ANSI / ANS 58.2 technical standard. However, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) has recently pointed out non-conservatism in existing high energy pipe fracture evaluation methods, and required the assessment of the unsteady load of the jet caused by a potential feedback mechanism as well as the impact range of steam jet, the jet impact loads and the blast wave effects at the initial breakage stage. The potential feedback mechanism refers to a phenomenon in which a vortex formed by impingement jets amplifies vortex itself and induces jet vibration in a shear layer. In this study, CFD methodology using the LES turbulence model is established and numerical analysis is carried out to evaluate the dynamic behavior of impingement jets and the potential feedback mechanism during jet impingement. Obtained results have been compared with an empirical correlation and experiment.

  • In the course of missile system design, jet plume impingement is encountered in designing airframe as well as launchers, requiring careful investigation of its effect on the system. In the present paper, recent works on such topic are presented to demonstrate usefulness of CFD results in helping design the hardware. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. The main parameters are the ratio of the jet pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle and the wall. In the current application, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, but the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. The same methodology is then applied to a complex vertical launcher system (VLS), capturing its flow structure and major design parameter. These applications involving jets are thus hoped to demonstrate the usefulness and value of CFD in designing a complex structure in the real engineering environment.

  • The impingement of the fuel spray on the wall within the combustion chamber in compact high-pressure injection engines and on the intake port wall in port-fuel-inje- ction type engines is unavoidable. It is important to understand the characteristics of impinging spray because it influences on the rate of fuel evaporation and droplet distrib- ution etc. In this study, the numerical study for the characteristics of spray/wall interaction is performed to test the applicability and reliability of spray/wall impingement models. The impingement models used are stick model, reflect model, jet model and Watkins and Park's model. The head of wall-jet eminating radilly outward from the spray impingement site contains a vortex. Small droplets are deflected away from the wall by the stagnation flow field and the gas wall-jet flow. While the larger droplets with correspondingly higher momentum are impinged on the wall surface and them are moved along the wall and are rolled up by wall-jet vortex. Using the Watkins and Park's model the predicted results show the most reasonable trend. The rate of increase of spread and the height of the developing wall-spray is predicted to decrease with increased ambient pressure(gas density).

  • Averaged heat transfer coefficients were measured in a turbine blade internal cooling passage model with three blockage walls. Each blockage wall was equipped with 9 staggered holes or slots in order to create different shaper of repeated jet impingement. The effect of jet shape on the averaged heat transfer coefficient was studied by the copper-thermocouple method and three Reynolds number of 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 were tested. Results showed that the repeated stagger jets could increase the averaged heat transfer coefficient by at least 9 times compared to the smooth channel cases. Due to the large pressure drop induced by the repeated jet impingement, the thermal performance was less than 1 for all cases and decreased as the Reynolds number increased. Among the tested cases, the widest slot showed the best thermal performance. The measurement results showed that the thermal performance of the heat transfer augmentation by repeated stagger jets could be improved by altering the jet shape, and other shape of impingement jet will be studied in near future.

  • In this paper, the heat transfer coefficient measurement techniques using TSP(temperature sensitive paint) were introduced and the results of a comparative study on the heat transfer coefficient measurement by steady state and transient TSP techniques were discussed. The distributions of heat transfer coefficient by a single $60^{\circ}$ inclined impingement jet on a flat surface were measured by both techniques. Tested Reynolds number based on the jet diameter (d) was 30,000 and the distance between jet exit and target plate (L) was fixed at 10d. Results showed that the measured Nusselt number by both techniques indicated significant difference except near the center of impingement jet. Also, the heat transfer coefficients measured by the transient TSP technique were affected by the reference temperature of the jet. Based on the measured data, characteristics of both TSP techniques were analyzed and suggestions for applying them were also given.

  • The MILD(Moderate or Intense Low-oxygen Dilution) combustion has been considered as one of the promising combustion technology for high thermal efficiency and low emissions. In this paper, the effect of fuel oxygen impingement on formation of MILD combustion was analyzed using numerical simulation. This investigation was simulated under the thermal intensity $0.04MW/m^3$ and equivalence ratio 0.91. The results show that the temperature distribution was become relatively uniform and the amount of CO emission was decreased as the increase of oxygen jet velocity and impinging angle.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of confined turbulent slot jet impingement on the flat plate with square rods(turbulence promoter) have been experimentally investigated at different nozzle configuration. The effects of jet Reynolds number (Re=3900, 5800, 7800, 9700), dimensionless slot-to-plate distance(H/B=4, 6, 8) and clearance(c) between square rods and the plate were examined. Measurement of heat transfer rate were conducted using naphthalene sublimation technique. When square rods were inserted over the heat transfer surface, heat transfer rate was slightly increased in the wall jet region and the sharp-edged orifice nozzle was heigher than squared orifice nozzle.
