Experiments were conducted to investigate the turbulent flow characteristics from on oblique impingement surface to an plane jet at the jet Reynolds number(Re based on the nozzle width) $3{\times}10^4$ The jet mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles have been measured along the impingement surface by hot-wire anemometer. The nozzle-to-plate distance(H/B) ranged from 2 to 10 and the oblique angle (a) from 45 to 90 degree. Also the secondary peak of the turbulent intensity was observed at H/B=4 S/B 5 and a=90 degree. It has been found that the stagnation point shifted toward the minor flow region as the oblique angle decreased and the position of the stagnation point nearly coincided with that of the maximum turbulent intensity.

The present study numerically investigates the effect of shield on the flow characteristics of Hartmann whistle. The flow characteristics of un-shielded Hartmann whistle are compared with whistles of different shield heights 15 mm, 17 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm and 30 mm. The comparison of Mach number contours and transient velocity vectors of shielded Hartmann whistles with un-shielded ones for the same conditions reveal that the presence of shield causes the exiting jet to stick to the wall of the shield without causing spill-over around the cavity inlet, thus sustaining the shock oscillation as seen in the unshielded Hartmann whistle, which has intense flow/shock oscillation and spill-over around the cavity mouth. The velocity vectors indicate jet regurgitance in shielded whistles showing inflow and outflow phases like un-shielded ones with different regurgitant phases. The sinusoidal variation of mass flow rate at the cavity inlet in un-shielded Hartmann whistle indicates jet regurgitance as the primary operating mode with large flow diversion around the cavity mouth whereas the non-sinusoidal behavior in shielded ones represent that the jet regurgitance is not the dominant operating mode. Thus, this paper sufficiently demonstrates the effect of shield in modifying the flow/shock oscillations in the vicinity of the cavity mouth.
In the present work, the aerodynamic characteristics of elliptic airfoils which have a 12% thickness ratio are numerically investigated based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and a transition SST model at a Reynolds number 8.0$\times$105. The numerical simulation of a synthetic jet actuator which is a well-known zero-net-mass active flow control actuator located at x/c = 0.00025, was performed to control massive flow separation around the leading edge of the elliptic airfoils. Four cases of non-dimensional frequencies were simulated at an angle of attack of 12 degree. It is found that the size of the vortex induced by synthetic jets was getting smaller as the jet frequency becomes higher. Comparison of the location of synthetic jets between x/c = 0.00025 (around the leading edge) and x/c = 0.9 (near the separation) shows that the control near the leading edge induces closed recirculation flow regions caused by the interaction of the synthetic jet with the external flow, but the control applied at 0.9c (near the trailing edge) induces a very small and weak vortex which quickly decays due to weak intensity.

The present study numerically investigates two-dimensional fluid flow in the confined jet flow in the presence of applied magnetic field. Numerical simulations to calculate the fluid flow and heat transfer in the confined jet are performed for different Reynolds numbers in the absence and presence of magnetic fields in the range of $0{\le}N{\le}0.05$, where N is the Stuart number (interaction parameter) which is the ratio of electromagnetic force to inertia force. The present study reports the detailed information of flow in the channel at different Stuart numbers. As the intensity of applied magnetic fields increases, the vortex shedding formed in the channel becomes weaker and the oscillating amplitude of impinging jet decreases. The flow fields become the steady state if the Stuart number is greater than a critical value. Thus the pressure coefficients at the stagnation point also vary as a function of Stuart number.

This paper introduces empirical correlations to obtain the gas/liquid flow rates and the spray drop size of low viscosity liquid injected by Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers. The gas flow rate is well correlated with the gas injection pressure and the mixing point pressure, based on the compressible flow theory. Similarly, the liquid flow rate is determined by the liquid injection pressure and the mixing point pressure, and a simple correlation for the liquid discharge coefficient at the liquid port was deduced from the experimental results. The mixing point pressure, which is one of the essential parameters, was expressed in terms of the gas/liquid flow rate ratio and the mixing port length. Disintegration and atomization mechanisms both within the mixing port and outside the atomizer were carefully re-examined, and a "basic" correlation form representing the mean diameter of drops was proposed. The "basic" correlation was expressed in terms of the mean gas density within the mixing port, gas/liquid mass flow rate ratio and the Weber number. Though the correlation is somewhat complicated, it represents the experimental data within an accuracy of ${\pm}15%$.EX>${\pm}15%$.

The objective of the present study is to investigate experimentally the mean flow characteristics of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer over a rotating disk with an impinging jet at the center of the disk, which may be regarded as one of the simplest models for the flow in turbomachinery. A relatively strong radial outflow (crossflow) generated from the impinging jet is added to the radial outflow (crossflow) induced by the centrifugal force in order to create the three-dimensional boundary layer. A new calibration technique has been introduced to determine the velocity direction and magnitude using an I-wire probe, where the uncertainties are ${\pm}1.5^{\circ}$ and ${\pm}0.35\;m/s$, respectively, in the laminar boundary layer region, compared with the known exact solutions. The flow in the tangential direction is of similar type to that associated with a favorable pressure gradient, considering that no wake region appears in wall coordinate velocity profiles and the Clauser shape factor is between 4.0 and 5.3. The flow angle is significantly changed by the crossflow generated by the impinging jet.
In vacuum ejector-diffuser systems where a finite volume secondary chamber is used, the secondary jet exhibits transient characteristics during start-up. A steady state is achieved after some time in which mass entrainment prevails indefinitely inside the ejector, though there is no flow from the secondary chamber. An attempt is made in this work to study the infinite entrainment of secondary jet into the primary jet from a finite secondary chamber, with the help of a computational fluid dynamics method. The present study is also intended to identify the operating range of vacuum ejector-diffuser systems where the steady flow assumption can be applied without uncertainty. The results obtained show that the only condition in which an infinite mass entrainment is possible is the generation of a re-circulation zone near the primary nozzle exit. The flow in the secondary chamber attains a state of dynamic equilibrium at this point. Steady flow assumption is valid only after this point.
Micro-PIV(particle image velocimetry) has been widely used to measure the velocity of micro flow. Although this micro-PIV method can give accurate 2D instantaneous velocity information of mea-surement plane, it cannot resolve the out of plane component of velocity vectors. Lots of the micro fluidic devices generate three-dimensional flow and 3D measurement of velocity is useful to understand the physics of micro flow phenomena. In this study, we constructed stereoscopic micro-PIV(SMPIV) system and applied this method to the impinging micro jet flow. The results show that this method can produce accu-rate 3D reconstruction of micro jet flow.

Flow visualization study has been conducted to simulate the turbulent dispersion behavior of a crossflow jet physically under the conditions of various thermal stratification in a wind tunnel. A smoke jet with the constant ratio of the jet to freestream velocity is injected normally to the cross flow of the thermally stratified wind tunnel(TSWT) for flow visualization. The typical natures of the smoke dispersion under different thermal stratifications such as neutral, weakly stable, strongly stable, weakly unstable, strongly unstable and inversion layer are successfully reproduced in the TSWT. The Instantaneous velocity and temperature fluctuations are measured by using a cold and hot-wire combination probe. The time averaged dispersion behaviors, the centerline trajectories, the spreading angles and the virtual origins of the cross jet are deduced from the edge detected images with respect to the stability parameter. All the general characteristics of the turbulent dispersion behavior reveal that the definitely different dispersion mechanisms are inherent in both stable and unstable conditions. It is conjectured that the turbulent statistics obtained in the various stability conditions quantitatively demonstrate the vertical scalar flux plays a key role in the turbulent dispersion behavior.
Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate normal to the flow are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. In the present study, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, while the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle at 3D high, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. Here D is the nozzle exit diameter. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the distance increases, but the maximum mean pressure level at the plate is achieved when the distance is about 4D high. The frequency of the wall pressure is estimated at 6.0 kHz, 9.3 kHz, and 10.0 kHz as the impinging distance varies from 3D, 4D, to 6D, respectively.
