  • The production practices, productivity and economic performance of organic and non-chemical rice farming were compared in Jeonnam Province, Korea. Korean organic rice farming showed a lack of use of resistant varieties and rotational cropping systems as well as less use of farm wastes and a high dependency upon external inputs. When compared with no-chemical rice production practices very little differences were found. However, organic rice farming showed 15% to 18% higher profits than no-chemical farming even though the productivity was arguably similar between the two farming types. This may encourage more farmers to convert to organic production rather than non-chemical farming as the farming practices are very similar, thereby resulting in increased supply of organic products and decreased prices for organic rice near future. There is a need to more greatly differentiate organic farming practices and products from those of no-chemical farming.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate factors influencing the adoption of environment-friendly agriculture in greenhouse vegetable production of Jeonnam province. An interview survey were conducted during 2008, including six counties: Gwansanku of Gwangju, Gwangyang, Goheung, Damyang, Boseong, and Suncheon. Major crops grown in surveyed area were green peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, tomatoes, and watermelons. Logit model results show that adopters of environment-friendly agriculture are more likely to participate in extensional education programs, attend educational programs on environment-friendly agriculture, have greater cultivated acreage, and have larger agriculture-only-designated farmland. However the adopters are less likely to have greater number of family members participating in farming, and live Goheung county. Efforts should be made in extensional education programs to lead more vegetable growers to adopt environment-friendly agriculture. Policy makers' additional efforts should be followed to increase adoption rate of environment-friendly agriculture in lower adopted areas.

  • Hitchhiker insect species from international vessels entering Korea in 2022 were monitored. A total of 947 samples of hitchhiker insects were collected using a simple collection method by hand. Among them, 856 individuals were classified as 374 species of 86 families in 10 orders through integrative analysis with DNA barcoding and morphological examination. The rest 91 individuals were identified only to the family level. As a result of examining the distribution of the 374 species (856 individuals), 38 species (71 individuals) were confirmed as not-distributed species in Korea, including six species (11 individuals) as 'regulated species' listed by the Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency. Of 38 not-distributed species, 10 species were detected multiple times (at least twice). Accordingly, it is necessary to strengthen monitoring of the area around the port of entry along with continuous surveillance to prevent invasion of species detected multiple times. For monitoring alien hitchhiker insect species, this study provided detection information and biological data for alien species.
