This paper presents an equation to depict the penetration behavior during the standard penetration test (SPT) in sandy deposits. An energy balance approach is considered and the driving mechanism of the SPT sampler is conceptually modeled as that of a miniature open-ended steel pipe pile into sands. The equation consists of three sets of input parameters including hyperbolic parameters (m and ${\lambda}$) which are difficult to determine. An iterative technique is thus applied to determine the optimized values of m and ${\lambda}$ using three measured values from a routine SPT data. It is verified from a well-documented record that the simulated penetration curves are in good agreement with the measured ones. At a given depth, the increase in m results in the decrease in ${\lambda}$ and the increase in the curvature of the penetration curve as well as the simulated N-value. Generally, the predicted penetration curve becomes nearly straight for the portion of exceeding the seating drive zone, which is more pronounced as soil density increases. Thus, the simulation method can be applied to extrapolating a prematurely completed test data, i.e., to determining the N value equivalent to a 30 cm penetration. A simple linear equation is considered for obtaining similar results.
A computer based iterative numerical procedure has been developed to analyse reinforced high strength concrete columns subjected to horizontal wave loads and eccentric vertical load by taking the material, geometrical and wave load non-linearity into account. The behaviour of the column has been assumed, to be represented by Moment-Thrust-Curvature relationship of the column cross-section. The formulated computer program predicts horizontal load versus deflection behaviour of a column up to failure. The developed numerical model has been applied to analyse several column specimens of various slenderness, structural properties and axial load ratios, tested by other researchers. The predicted values are having a better agreement with experimental results. A simplified user friendly hydrodynamic load model has been developed based on Morison equation supplemented with a wave slap term to predict the high frequency non-linear impulsive hydrodynamic loads arising from steep waves, known as ringing loads. A computer program has been formulated based on the model to obtain the wave loads and non-dimensional wave load coefficients for all discretised nodes, along the length of column from instantaneous free water surface to bottom of the column at mud level. The columns of same size and material properties but having different slenderness ratio are analysed by the developed numerical procedure for the simulated wave loads under various vertical thrust. This paper discusses the results obtained in detail and effect of slenderness in resisting wave loads under various vertical thrust.

When ships and offshore plants are flooded or the floating crane is equipped with a heavy object, these floating structures are excessively inclined. In this case, immersion, heel, and trim affecting the hydrostatic restoration performance are very large and are coupled each other. In this paper, in order to calculate a static equilibrium position of floating structures with excessive inclination, the nonlinear governing equations were constructed by sequential linearization. In the governing equation, the immersion, heel, and trim are fully coupled, and the equations are represented using a plane area, a primary moment, and a moment of inertia of the water plane area. Therefore, it is possible to calculate the additional factor related the water plane area for estimating stability. Position and orientation of the floating structure are obtained by iterative calculation. The calculated results are compared with the previous studies in the aspect to the performance and the accuracy.
The effect of soil foundation plays active role in optimum design of steel space frames when included. However, its influence on design can be calculated after a long iterative procedure. So it requires longer computer time and more computational effort if it is done properly. The main purpose of this study is to investigate how these effects can be calculated in more practical way in a shorter time. The effects of semi-rigid column bases are taken into account in optimum design of steel space frames. This study is carried out by using JAYA algorithm which is a novel and practical method based on a single revision equation. The displacement, stress and geometric size constraints are considered in the optimum design. A computer program is coded in MATLAB to achieve corporation with SAP2000-OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface) for optimum solutions. Four different steel space frames including soil structure interaction taken from literature are investigated according to different semi-rigidly supported models depending on different rotational stiffness values. And the results obtained from analyses are compared with the results available in reference studies. The results of the study show that semi-rigidly supported systems in the range of appropriate rotational stiffness values offer practical solutions in a very short time. And close agreement is obtained with the studies on optimum design of steel space frames including soil effect underneath.

Modern ultra-large container carriers can be exposed to the unprecedented springing excitation from ocean waves due to their relatively low torsional rigidity. Large deck opening on the deck of container carriers tends to cause warping distortion of hull structure under wave-induced excitation, eventually leading to the higher chance of resonance vibration between its torsional response and incoming waves. To handle this problem, a higher-order B-spline Rankine panel method and Vlasov-beam FE model was directly coupled in the time domain, and the coupled equation was solved by using an implicit iterative method. In order to capture the complicated behavior of thin-walled open section girder, a sophisticated beam-based finite element model was developed, which takes into account warping distortion and shear-on-wall effect. Then, the developed beam model was directly coupled with the time-domain Rankine panel method for hydrodynamic problem by using the fixed-point iteration method. The developed computational scheme was validated through the comparison with the frequency-domain solution on the container carrier model in linear springing regime.

In this paper, we proposed a new algorithm of the inverse scattering for the reconstruction of unknown dielectric scatterers using the finite-difference time-domain method and the design sensitivity analysis. We introduced the design sensitivity analysis based on the gradient for the fast convergence of the reconstruction. By introducing the adjoint variable method for the efficient calculation, we derived the adjoint variable equation. As an optimal algorithm we used the steepest descent method and reconstructed the dielectric targets using the iterative estimation. To verify our algorithm we will show the numerical examples for the two-dimensional $TM^2$ cases.

An efficient and useful method to improve the local stress field in a displacement-formulated finite element solution has been proposed using the theory of conjugate approximations for a stress field and the Loubignac's iterative method for a displacement field. Validity of the proposed method has been tested through three test examples, to improve the stress field and displacement field in the whole domain and the local regions. As a result of analysis on the test examples, it is found that the stress field in the local regions are approximated to those in the whole domain within a few iterations which have satisfied the original finite element equilibrium equation. In addition, it is found that the local stress field are by far better approximated to the exact stress field than the displacement-based stress field with the reduction of the finite-element mesh-size.

This paper presents a method to investigate the characteristics of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor due to elevated temperature considering the variation of the clearance as well as the lubricant viscosity. Iterative finite element analysis of the heat conduction and the thermal deformation is performed to determine the viscosity and clearance of a hydrodynamic bearing due to elevated temperature until the temperature of the bearing area converges. Proposed method is verified by comparing the calculated temperature with the measured one in elevated surrounding temperature as well as in room temperature. This research shows that elevated temperature changes the clearance as well as the lubricant viscosity of the hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor. Once the viscosity and the clearance of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor are determined, finite element analysis of the Reynolds equation is performed to investigate the static and dynamic characteristics of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDB spindle motor due to elevated temperature. It also shows that the variation of clearance due to elevated temperature is another important design consideration to affect the static and dynamic characteristics of a hydrodynamic bearing of a HDD spindle motor
A vorticity-based method for the numerical solution of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The governing equations for vorticity, velocity and pressure variables are expressed in an integro-differential form. The global coupling between the vorticity and the pressure boundary conditions is fully considered in an iterative procedure when numerical schemes are employed. The finite volume method of the second order TVD scheme is implemented to integrate the vorticity transport equation with the dynamic vorticity boundary condition. The velocity field is obtained by using the Biot-Savart integral. The Green's scalar identity is used to solve the total pressure in an integral approach similar to the surface panel methods which have been well established for potential flow analysis. The present formulation is validated by comparison with data from the literature for the two-dimensional cavity flow driven by shear in a square cavity. We take two types of the cavity now: (ⅰ) driven by non-uniform shear on top lid and body forces for which the exact solution exists, and (ⅱ) driven only by uniform shear (of the classical type).
