  • In this study, experiments on the static adsorption of benzene were carried out using activated carbon made from Pinus koraiensis which is normally discarded waste timber in South Korea. The experiment were performed at 303.15 K, 318.15 K and 333.15 K under the pressure up to 7.999 kPa. Isothermal adsorption curves were obtained using Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm and Toth isotherm for comparison. Based on the fitting, the adsorption quantity of Benzene (q), the isothermal adsorption curves obtained from Langmuir isotherm and Toth isotherm showed the higher accuracy. Although there was little difference in accuracy between result from Langmuir isotherm and that from Toth isotherm, the adsorption quantity of Benzene (q) was expressed in terms of Langmuir isotherm because less parameters were required for Langmuir isotherm than for Toth isotherm. Moreover SEM images of the activated carbon from Pinus koraiensis and the commercial activated carbon were taken to observe the pore size development. The results showed that the perforation development of activated carbon from Pinus koraiensis (waste timber) was better than that of commercial activated carbon (DARCO A.C., SPG-100 A.C.). Adsorption quantity of benzene on activated carbon from Pinus koraiensis was confirmed to be higher than that on commercial activated carbon. Therefore, we may conclude that it is feasible to commercialize the process to manufacturing activated carbon from waste timber.

  • The adsorption of methyl green dye using an activated carbon from an aqueous solution was investigated. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of the adsorbent dose, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The Langmuir isotherm model showed a good fit to the equilibrium adsorption data. Based on the estimated Langmuir separation factor, ($R_L=0.02{\sim}0.106$), this process could be employed as the effective treatment (0 < $R_L$ < 1). It was found that the adsorption was a physical process with the adsorption energy (E) value range between 316.869 and 340.049 J/mol obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich equation. The isothermal saturation capacity obtained from brunauer emmett teller (BET) model increased with increasing the temperature. The kinetics of adsorption followed a pseudo second order model. The free energy and enthalphy values of -5.421~-7.889 and 31.915 kJ/mol, respectively indicated that the adsorption process follows spontaneous endothermic reaction. The isosteric heat of adsorption increased with the increase of equilibrium adsorption amounts, and the total interaction of the adsorbent - adsorbate increased as the surface coverage increased.

  • The effects of adsorption and desorption of alkali-metals on Si(111) surface were investigated by using AES and RHEED-system. The adsorption system is a fundamental interest because of its unique electronic properties such as measurement of work function change, adatom-core level shift. It was found that the growth node of K on Si(111) surface was layer by layer growth and the saturation coverage was 2.0ML at room temperature. Superstructure changes on Si(111) surface according to the alkali-metal thickness and substrate temperatures were accurately defined. By applying the isothermal desorption method, the desorption energies of Li/Si(111) and K/Si(111) surfaces was measured. On Li/Si(111) and K/Si(111) surfaces, the desorption energies were 3.07 eV, 2.19 eV respectively.

  • In this study, we investigated phosphate removal efficiency according to pretreatment (pyrolysis temperature, pyrolysis time, particle size) of oyster shells as a basic study for their recycling. And XAFS analysis and isothermal adsorption experiments were performed to investigate the phosphate removal characteristics of oyster shells. As a result, the removal efficiency was good at $600^{\circ}C$ pyrolysis temperature with 6 hour pyrolysis time and 0.355 ~ 0.075 mm particle size. Isothermal adsorption experiments showed that the Langmuir model is suitable for adsorption of oyster shells. XAFS analysis showed that calcium phosphate formed on the oyster shell pyrolyzed at $600^{\circ}C$. In other words, it was confirmed that the formation of calcium phosphate by the calcium ion elution of the oyster shell contributes to the decrease of phosphate concentration.

  • The removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-DCP) in aqueous solution was studied using the magnetic activated carbon (MAC) prepared from waste citrus peel. The adsorption characteristics of 2,4-DCP by MAC were investigated by varying the contact time, MAC dose, solution temperature, pH and 2,4-DCP concentration. The isothermal adsorption data were well explained by the Langmuir isotherm model equation and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm equation was 312.5 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order reaction equation. The intraparticle diffusion model data indicated that both the film and intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously during the adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameters of ${\Delta}H^o$ and ${\Delta}G^o$ have positive and negative values, respectively, indicating that the adsorption of 2,4-DCP by MAC is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. After the adsorption experiment was completed, the used MAC could be easily separated by an external magnet.

  • Adsorption experiments of N-methylcarbamate insecticides on soils were carried out as a function of soil pH ana soil organic matter content with wet-and dry-land soils that were either oxidized or non-oxidized. The results obtained may be summarized as follows: The adsorption of N-methylcarbamate insecticides on soils was nearly leached to equilibrium after shaking for 12 hours. The adsorption of N-methylcarbamate insecticides was higher on sandy clay than sandy loam. The presence of organic matter in soil increased the adsorption of N-methrlcarbamate insecticides on soils. The mode of isothermal adsorption of N-methylcarbamate insecticides on soils was coincident with the Freundlich equation. Little effect of soil pH on the adsorption might be interpreted as that the adsorption was due to physical adsorption between N-methylcarbamate molecules and soil surface.

  • Trichloroethylene(TCE) is the organic compound which is used variously at the industrial areas. It contaminates soils and groundwater by leaked storage tank, careless treatment in field and the effluent from waste landfills. This study was carried out to identify adsorptive behavior of TCE by soil. Batch experiments were conducted at different soil-organic matter content and lime treatment to determine Freundlich isothermal adsorption equation constant, k and n, for TCE. Sewage sludge cake was applied to make different soil-organic matter content with the level of Oton/ha(S1), 50ton/ha(S2), 100ton/ha(S3). Lime(calcium hydroxide) was treated with the level of 2ton/ha, 4ton/ha, 6ton/ha, 10ton/ha. Freundlich isothermal adsorption equations obtained from experiment with sewage sludge cake were as follows (on condition that the level of TCE applied to soil ranged from 0.5ng/g soil to 2.5 ng/g soil.) : S1 :x/m = 0.393 $C^2$, S2 : x/m = 0.436 $C^2$, S3 : x/m = 0.636 $C^2$Value of k was increased in higher order of 51, 52, 53 with increased level of sewage sludge cake application. From this results, soil which was applied higher level of sewage sludge cake had a good ability on TCE adsorption. With increased the level of lime application, pH of the soil was increased and the ability of the soil in TCE adsorption was decreased.

  • Adsorption dynamics for toluene and trichloroethylene with an isothermal fixed bed of activated carbon fiber were investigated. Equilibrium isotherms were measured by a static method for toluene and trichloroethylene onto activated carbon fiber at temperatures of 298, 323, and 348 K and pressure up to 3 kPa for toluene and 6 kPa for trichloroethylene, respectively. These results were correlated by the Toth equation. And dynamic experiments in an isothermal condition of 298 K were examined. Breakthrough curves reflected the effects of the experimental variables such as partial pressures for adsorbate and interstitial bulk velocities of gas flow. To present the column dynamics, a dynamic model based on the linear driving force (LDF) mass transfer model was applied.

  • Magnetite was chosen as a typical adsorbent to study its phosphate adsorption capacity in water body with low concentration of phosphorus (below $2mg\;PL^{-1}$). Magnetite was collected from Luoyang City, Henan Province, China. In this research, three factors have been studied to describe the adsorption of phosphate on magnetite, which was solution concentration (concentration ranging from 0.1 to $2.5mg\;PL^{-1}$), suspension pH (1 to 13) and temperature (ranging from $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$). In addition, the modified samples had been characterized with XRD and FE-SEM image. The results show that iron ions contains in magnetite were the main factors of phosphorus removal. The behavior of phosphorus adsorption to substrates could be fitted to both Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption equations in the low concentration phosphorus water. The theoretical saturated adsorption quantity of magnetite is 0.158 mg/g. pH has great influence on the phosphorus removal of magnetite ore by adsorption. And pH of 3 can receive the best results. While temperature has little effect on it. Magnetite was greatly effective for phosphorus removal in the column experiments, which is a more practical reflection of phosphorous removal combing the adsorption isotherm model and the breakthrough curves. According to the analysis of heavy metals release, the release of heavy metals was very low, they didn't produce the secondary pollution. The mechanism of uptake phosphate is in virtue of chemisorption between phosphate and ferric ion released by magnetite oxidation. The combined investigation of the magnetite showed that it was better substrate for water body with low concentration of phosphorus.

  • The adsorption of 2-Chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-trazine (Atrazine) and 2-Chloro-2' 6' diethyl-N(methoxymethyl)acetanilide(Alachlor) by 21 Korean surface soils is studied and discussed in relation to some properties of soils. 1. Adsorption of Atrazine was correlated posisively with content of clay and organic matter, but negatively with extractable potassium content and sand content. 2. Adsorption of Alachlor was correlated positively with organic matter, caly content and CEC, but negatively with sand content 3. Isothermal adsorpsion of Alachlor was confirmed to the Freundlich eguation.
