The electro-chemical removal (ECR) of water pollutants by metal-ACF electrodes from wastewater was investigated over wide range of ECR time. The ECR capacities of metallic ACF electrodes were related to physical properties such as adsorption isotherm, surface area and pore size and to reaction time. Surface morphologies and elemental analysis for the metal supported ACFs after electro-catalytic reaction were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse X-ray (EDX) to explain the changes in adsorption properties. The IR spectra of metallic ACFs for the investigation of functional groups show that the electro-catalytic treatment is consequently associated with the removal of pollutants with the increasing surface reactivity of the activated carbon fibers. The metal-ACFs were electro-catalytically reacted to waste water to investigate the removal efficiency for the COD, T-N, $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N and $NO_2$-N. From these removal results of the piggery waste using metallic ACFs substrate, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The removal efficiency of the metallic ACFs substrate was mainly determined by the properties of the material for adsorption and trapping of organics, and catalytic effects.

Removal of methyl mercaptan was investigated using adsorption on virgin activated carbon (VAC) and modified activated carbons with acidic chemicals in the present work. CAC, NAC, AAC and SAC were represented as activated carbons modified with HCI, HNO$_{3}$, CH$_{3}$COOH and H$_{2}$S0$_{4}$ ,respectively The pore structures were evaluated using nitrogen isotherm. The surface properties of virgin activated carbon and modified activated carbons were characterized by EA, pH of carbon surface and acid value from Boehm titration. The modification of activated carbon with acidic chemicals resulted in a decrease in BET surface area, micropore volume and surface pH, but an increase in acid value. The order of the adsorption capacity of activated carbons was NAC>AAC>SAC>CAC>VAC, and in agreement with that of acid value of activated carbons, whereas in disagreement with that of micropore volume of activated carbons. It appeared that chemical adsorption played an important role in methyl mercaptan on modified activated carbons with acidic chemicals compared to virgin activated carbon. Modifying activated carbon with acidic chemicals enabled to significantly enhance removal of methyl mercaptan.

An Amberlite XAD-4 resin impregnated with di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid was prepared and its adsorption-desorption behaviors with Sr(II) ions under various conditions was examined. The resin was characterized by fourier transform infrared and thermal analysis techniques. The effects contact time, temperature, pH, interfering ions and eluants were studied. Results showed that adsorption of Sr (II) well fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption data of Sr (II) on the impregnated resin were analyzed by Jossens, Weber-van Vliet, Redlich-Peterson and Fritz-Schlunder models to find out desirable equilibrium condition. Among them, the Fritz-Schlunder model best fitted to the experimental data. The maximum sorption capacity of impregnated resin amounted to 0.45 mg/ g at pH 8.0 and $20^{\circ}C$.
The present study investigates treatment methods for removal of arsenic from wastewater. The granular activated carbon (GAC) with the coating of iron chloride ($FeCl_3$) was used for the treatment of a low concentration of arsenic from wastewater. Batch experiments were performed to investigate the synthesis of Fe-GAC (Iron coated granular activated carbon), effects of pH, adsorption kinetics and the Langmuir model. The synthesized Fe-GAC with 0.1 M $FeCl_3$ shows best removal efficiency. Adsorption studies were carried out in the optimum pH range of 4-6 for arsenic removal. The Fe-GAC showed promising results by removing 99.4% of arsenic. In the adsorption isotherm studies, the observed data fitted well with the Langmuir models. In continuous column study showed that As(V) could be removed to below 0.25 mg/L within 1,020 pore volume. Our results suggest that the surface modified granular activated carbon treated with $FeCl_3$ for effective removal of arsenic from wastewater.

The inhibitive action of thiadiazolopyrimidines on mild steel in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ has been studied using weight loss, gasometric studies and electrochemical polarization and AC impedance measurements. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ with optimum concentration of inhibitors was studied in the temperature ranging from 313-333K The adsorption of the inhibitor on the surface of mild steel was found to be exothermic, spontaneous and followed the mechanism of physisorption. The adsorption of these compounds on mild steel surface was found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The protective film formed on the surface of mild steel by the adsorption of inhibitor in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ solution was confirmed by optical microscopic technique. Synergistic effect of halide ions on mild steel in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ was studied by weight loss technique.
Several adsorbents were tried to remove the selenium ions from industrial wastewater and the following ascending order of the adsorption performance for the selenium at pH 9 was observed: cation exchange resin < chelate resin < zeolite < brown marine algae < granular activated carbon < anion exchange resin. Initial concentration of selenium(146 mg/L) in industrial wastewater was reduced to 63 mg/L of selenium at pH 9 by neutralization process. The maximum uptake of Se calculated from the Langmuir isotherm with anion exchange resin was 0.091 mmol/g at pH 10 and that with granular activated carbon was 0.083 mmol/g at pH 6. The affinity coefficients of Se ion towards anion exchange resin and granular activated carbon were 3.263 L/mmol at pH 10 and 0.873 L/mmol at pH 6, respectively. The sorption performance of anion exchange resin at the low concentration of Se, namely, was much better than that of granular activated carbon. The Se ions from industrial wastewater throughout neutralization process and two steps of adsorption using anion exchange resin was removed to 97.7%.
Hydrolysis and adsorption reversibility experiments were run for initial enzyme activity of 4.48, 9.65, 11.19 and 17.14U/mL at a temperature 30$^\circ C$. The chitin particle size corresponded to a mean particle diameter of 0.127mm, and the initial concentration of chitin was 10mg/mL. After approximately 2hrs, the enzyme activity remained constant in a speudo-steady state. The amounts in the bulk [E] and the amounts of enzyme adsorbed on the chitin surface [E] are plotted on Lineweaver-Burk plot to yield a linear relationship with a correlation coefficient of 0.99, a slope of 2.79cm$^-1$ and an intercept of 0.08$\textrm{cm}^2$/U. From this parameters, the values of [E$_T$] and $K_E$ were calculated to be 12.5U/cm$^2$ and 34.88U/mL. respectively, Adsorption isotherm of the enzyme on the particles showed a well developed plateau of 1.35$\times$10$^-3$, 4.72$\times$10$^-3$, 4.42$\times$10$^-3$, 8.58$\times$10$^-3$U/cm$^2$ at 30$^\circ C$. To determine the specificity of chitinase for crystalline chitin, the free energy of adsorption was measured, and its was determined as about -14.62~-18.8kJ/mol.
In this study, alginic acid that had an high affinity for a heavy metal and was noted for biological adsorbent was modified by an oxidizer, $KMnO_4$. Chemical modification changed hydroxyl of the alginic acid into carboxyl and compare with alginic acid, modified alginic acid exhibited a characteristics that carboxyl groups are comparatively high. For the use of them as an adsorbent, beads were prepared by dropping alginic acid and modified alginic acid solution in dilute 2 wt% $CaCl_2$ solution for non water soluble. The amount of removed $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ by modified alginic acid beads showed 84.7 mg and 90.9 mg per gram of beads, respectively. And it showed the amount of adsorbed heavy metal ions 10~20% higher than that of alginic acid beads in range of pH 4~7. In particular, modified alginic acid have a good adsorption capacity for $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ by Freundlich adsorption isotherm. According to this study, it is verified that alginic acid that is a nature high molecular substance improved capacity for actual application by increased heavy metal adsorption capacity by chemical modification.
The removal of phosphorus was investigated from sewage waste water (SWW) using the used foundry sand (UFS). The optimal pH occurred at pH 2 for adsorption of phosphorus species in batch test. Phosphorus could be recovered with 99.9% from SWW in two hours at pH 2 using 100 g of UFS per liler of SWW. The adsorption of phosphorus species on UFS obeyed Langmuir isotherm, whose equation could be expressed by 1= 0.00059/(1+2.49878). Continuous column test for adsorption showed that breakthrough point appeared In 25 hours on the condition of breakthrough concentration of 8 mg/l
We studied adsorption isotherm, surface properties and antibacterial activity of Cu treated activated carbon fiber (ACF). The BET surface area of Cu treated ACF are distributed to $688.2-887.8m^2/g$. The adsorption results show that BET surface areas move gradually to lower value with increasing treated Cu mole concentration. Using t-method, the specific micropore volumes and average pore size were obtained. From the SEM study, it is also observed that many of micropores in activated carbon fiber are blocked surface after the treatment. And we also observed that the activity of E. coli in kind of colon bacillus increases gradually to larger range with increasing Cu mole ratio. From these results, we suggest the antibacterial mechanism for metal treated ACF.
