십각기생등각류 진흙새우아감벌레(Argeia pugettensis)가 진흙새우(Argis lar)의 성장과 생식에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Bopyrid Isopod Argeia pugettensis on the Growth and Reproduction of the Kuro Shrimp Argis lar)

  • The effect of a bopyrid isopod Argeia pugettensis, on the growth and reproduction of the Kuro shrimp Argis lar was investigated. A commercial caridean shrimp in the East Sea of Korea, A. lar, was sampled monthly off Pohang with a bottom trawl from July 2009 to June 2011. During the study period, 7,988 individuals were sampled. These shrimp were parasitized by a bopyrid isopod Argeia pugettensis. The overall infection rate was 3.3%, although it declined in the larger size classes. It did not change monthly. The carapace lengths of the host and parasite were positively correlated. There was a significant difference in growth between infested and non-infested shrimp. The infested shrimp also had a lower gonadosomatic index (GSI) and breeding rate. These results suggest that the parasites affected the growth and reproduction of Argis lar.

Development of a Denaturing High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (DHPLC) Assay to Detect Parasite Infection in Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes pugio

  • In developing a useful tool to detect parasitic dynamics in an estuarine ecosystem, a denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) assay was optimized by cloning plasmid DNA from the grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio, and its two parasites, the trematode Microphallus turgidus and bopyrid isopod Probopyrus pandalicola. The optimal separation condition was an oven temperature of $57.9^{\circ}C$ and 62-68% of buffer B gradient at a flow rate of 0.45 mL/min. A peptide nucleic acid blocking probe was designed to clamp the amplification of the host gene, which increased the amplification efficiency of genes with low copy numbers. Using the DHPLC assay with wild-type genomic, the assay could detect GC Gram positive bacteria and the bopyrid isopod (P. pandalicola). Therefore, the DHPLC assay is an effective tool for surveying parasitic dynamics in an estuarine ecosystem.

  • In this study, Caenanthura engimatica (Kensley and Reid, 1984) is newly reported from Korea along with detailed description and illustrations. This species can be characterized by the following features: cephalon has a rostrum extending as long as anterolateral lobes; pereonites 4-6 have shallow middorsal pits; the mandible palp has 2 articles; article 1 of the mandible palp is twice longer than article 2; and the maxillipedal palp has 1-3 fused and 4-5 fused articles. This is the first report of C. engimatica beyond Arabian Gulf, the type locality, and Indian Ocean. Additionally, we proposed a revised key to known species of the genus Caenathura Kensley, 1978.

  • 인제대학 생물학과에 보관되어 있는 등각류 표본 중 경상남도 양산군 기장읍, 제주도 서귀포, 전라남도 완도군 소안군도의 넙도와 보길도 등 남해안에서 채집된 Dynoides 속의 1신종이 확인되어 Dynoides spinipodus라고 명명하며 기재한다. 본 종은 수컷의 복부 후단부의 중앙이 원추형 뿔모양으로 길게 돌출되어 있는 점에서 Dynoides serratisinus Barnard, 1914, D. barnardi Baker, 1928 및 D. dentisinus Shen, 1929와 유사성을 가지나, 복미부 후단부의 둥근 홈 안 가장자리에 치아형 돌기열을 전혀 갖지 않는 점에서 이들과 뚜렷히 구분된다.

Isopod Parasite Induced Secondary Microbial Infection in Marine Food Fishes

  • Isopods are parasitic crustaceans that pose serious threat to fisheries. Several studies have tried to explore the host-pathogen relationship between marine fishes and isopods. The present study aims to understanding the secondary infections in marine fishes pertaining to isopods. To assess the secondary infection in infected fishes, parasite infested and healthy tissues of fishes were collected. The samples were subjected to standard microbiological procedure to identify the presence of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Our results showed the branchial region had the higher microbial load of non-sporulating cenocytic fungi in infected fishes. Moreover, fungal strains isolated from the parasitic lesion confirmed that the parasitation and body lesion facilitates the entry of several pathogenic microbes at the damaged host tissue. More over the immune regulation of fish fights back by producing minute cysts, trying to encapsulate the growing fungus. But this may eventually lead to systemic infestation and death of the fish.

  • Three marine isopods, Symmius yamaguchiensis Shimomura, 2008, Colanthura pigmentata Kensley, 1980 and Synidotea nipponensis Nunomura, 1985 are reported for the first time in South Korea. The family Chaetiliidae, and genera Symmius and Colanthura are new to South Korea. We provide descriptions of the diagnostic characteristics, illustrations of three species and their partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) for molecular characteristics.

  • A new species of ianirid isopod from a subtidal bottom in the Korea Strait is described and illustrated under the name of Juniralata koreuensis. This species is characterized by the cephalon lacking a distinct rostrum and prominent antero-lateral expansions, the pleotelson lacking postero-lateral projections, and the male pleopod 1 having a nipple-shaped lobe on lateral apex.
