In this paper, we present the newly developed propagation toss model of a long range maritime communication channel, measured by a ground to air flight test, and discuss its validity compared with the predictive value based on the spherical earth reflection model. To measure the propagation loss, actual flight test was performed in the Yellow Sea and the measurement of receiving signal strength was made for overall test range. As far as the test condition is concerned, it is expected that the receiving signal strength must be interfered with the reflected wave by an island existing around the reflection point. Therefore we introduce some modifications on the conventional spherical earth reflection model by including the effect due to the reflected wave from the island. And then, we compare the path loss measured by flight test with that one analyzed by the spherical earth reflection model accounting for reflected wave of the island. As a result of the comparison, it is verified to predict the path loss accurately by the spherical earth reflection model including the effect due to the reflected wave from an island for a long range ground to air communication.

Cheju Island is the most attractive resort area in Korea for its exotic landscape, natural beauty, and traditional culture which is quite different from that of the mainland. Until now, most of the recreational facilities and accomodations have been constructed along the coastal areas. Recently, mid-mountain area has been under very heavy development pressure because it is suitable for new sites for tourism facilities and the land price in the coastal area is very high. The mid-mountain area is the land located 200-600m above the sea level. It is a major source of water supply for the island and has exotic scenic beauty, which cannot be found in mainland but it is the area very vulnerable to water pollution Therefore, it is very important to manage this area based on the concept of environmentally sound and sustainable development in order to meet ever increasing demand for the land development The purposes of this project are: 1) to establish Geographic Information System for the whole island, 2)to formulate environmentally sound landuse plat However, There has been accuracy of the original map, defining criteria of analysis, updating of the data were identified for future tasks to be studied.
Land cover change due to urban population concentration and urban expansion can cause various environmental problems such as urban heat islands. In particular, New towns are considered an appropriate study site to analyze changes in urban climate due to rapid urbanization in a short period. This study used Landsat satellite imagery to compare and analyze the land cover changes before and after the development of two new towns with different plans, and the resulting changes in surface urban heat island (SUHI) phenomena. Correlation analysis was also conducted between urban structural features that may affect the SUHI intensity. The results of the analysis confirm the rapid change in land cover as new town development progresses and the direct intensification of the SUHI phenomenon. This study confirms the differences in SUHI caused by different urban plans and suggests the need for three-dimensional urban planning to improve the thermal environment.

Areas developed through land reclamation projects have huge economic advantages in terms of supplying lands that can be used for farmlands, urban areas and etc., however have relatively small areas of grasslands and densely located buildings compared to inland cities. Hence, an urban heat island is occurring in these areas due to this characteristic, and in particular, the urban heat island in Cheongna International City is getting serious. In this study, the urban heat island in Cheongna International City was evaluated and analyzed by classified into the three periods after the reclamation project: farmland(2001-2008), development(2009-2013) and artificial grassland(2014-2020). The land cover map and Landsat time-series imagery were utilized for measuring the differences of the land surface temperatures between the urbanized areas and the grassland/forest areas in Cheongna International City. The statistical results showed that the differences in the land surface temperature between these areas were calculated to be at most 0℃ during the period of farmland, at most 3.60℃ during the period of development, and at most 2.51℃ during the period of grassland. This study proved that the urban heat island phenomenon increased when the urbanized areas increased, and the urban heat island phenomenon decreased when the artificial grassland areas increased in Cheongna International City where the reclamation project was carried out. The statistical results derived through this research can be used as the reference data for identifying the urban heat island problem in urban planning and establishing the reduction plan.

Seventeen specimens of leptocephali [9.8-44.5 mm total length (TL)], of the family Ophichthidae, were collected from southeastern waters off Jeju Island and the Korea-Japan intermediate zone, and identified by means of morphology and genetics. These specimens were identified as belonging to the subfamily Ophichthinae based on various combinations of morphological characters: 211-215 total myomeres; 7 gut swellings; 2 liver lobes connected with the gall bladder on the second lobe; 6-7 postanal pigments present from anus to caudal margin. An analysis of the partial 12S rRNA sequences (849 base pairs) of mitochondrial DNA showed that our specimens must be Ophisurus macrorhynchos because their sequences were concordant with those of the adult O. macrorhynchos (genetic distance = 0.000). Furthermore, their total myomeres were consistent with those of the O. macrorhynchos adult. This is the first time that the morphological characteristics of O. macrorhynchos leptocephali have been described for Korean waters, and we suggest diagnostic characteristics for the genus Ophisurus leptocephali. We hypothesize that one of the spawning grounds of O. macrorhynchos is located in the southeastern part of Jeju Island.
A CpG island is a short stretch of DNA in which the frequency of the CG dinucleotide is higher than other regions. CpG islands are present in the promoters and exonic regions of approximately $30{\sim}60$% of mammalian genes so they are useful markers for genes in organisms containing 5-methylcytosine in their genomes. Recent evidence supports the notion that the hypermethylation of CpG island, by silencing tumor suppressor genes, plays a major causal role in cancer, which has been described in almost every tumor types. In this respect, CpG island search by computational methods is very helpful for cancer research and computational promoter and gene predictions. I therefore developed a window program (called CpGi) on the basis of CpG island criteria defined by D. Takai and P. A. Jones. The program 'CpGi' was implemented in Visual C++ 6.0 and can determine the locations of CpG islands using diverse parameters (%GC, Obs (CpG)/Exp (CpG), window size, step size, gap value, # of CpG, length) specified by user. The analysis result of CpGi provides a graphical map of CpG islands and G+C% plot, where more detailed information on CpG island can be obtained through pop-up window. Two human contigs, i.e. AP00524 (from chromosome 22) and NT_029490.3 (from chromosome 21), were used to compare the performance of CpGi and two other public programs for the accuracy of search results. The two other programs used in the performance comparison are Emboss-CpGPlot and CpG Island Searcher that are web-based public CpG island search programs. The comparison result showed that CpGi is on a level with or outperforms Emboss-CpGPlot and CpG Island Searcher. Having a simple and easy-to-use user interface, CpGi would be a very useful tool for genome analysis and CpG island research. To obtain a copy of CpGi for academic use only, contact corresponding author.

There are islands about 3,200 in Korea surrounded by the sea side. The region of islands is the transition areas which are a border in the land and marine ecosystem. It is rich in biodiversity depending on the interaction among inland, sea and atmosphere. However, it is worried that damages of marine environment is increased because the more national income and demands ofmarine leisure increase, the more development projects are grown in marine areas. Also this trends are extending in island areas. Incheon Metropolitan city has huge island areas which are both inhabited and deserted islands. The range of island areas is very wide, so it is difficult for the city government to manage environment in the island areas. Therefore, this paper analyzed and discussed the actual conditions about managing marine environment at island areas.
Mokpo is a port city in the southwest of the Korean Peninsula. The popular song "Tears of Mokpo" is a song planted in the hearts of the entire nation. In this content, there are Yudalsan Mountain and Samhakdo Island in Mokpo, and people vaguely know this area, but it is a familiar place. In particular, Samhakdo Island is a representative brand that symbolizes Mokpo and is a place with regional identity. Mokpo City is creating many facilities infrastructure to develop Samhakdo Island. It is a stepping stone for converting the local economy into a tourism industry. However, the development of performance contents for the soft power of local culture is weak. In this respect, this study presented performance contents for Samhakdo Island, Mokpo's representative brand, for local tourism attractiveness. The research progress is a study on planning and researching performance contents using the location of Samhakdo Island in Mokpo. First, the background of the theory of performance content planning based on local placeability was examined. Next, Samhakdo Island in Mokpo proposed planning for performance contents.
Water sources in volcanic Jeju Island are almost entirely dependent on groundwater because there are actually no perennial streams or rivers due to the permeable nature of surface soils derived from basaltic or trachytic rocks. Uncontrolled development of groundwater resulted in substantial water-level decline, groundwater pollution, and seawater intrusion in several places of the island. To maintain its sustainable groundwater, the provincial government has declared some parts of the island as the Special Groundwater Conservation/Management Area since 1994. Hence, all the activities for the groundwater development in the area should obtain official permit from relevant authorities. Furthermore, to acquire information on groundwater status, a network of groundwater monitoring was established to cover most of the low land and coastal areas with the installation of automatic monitoring systems since 2001. The analysis of the groundwater monitoring data indicated that the water levels had decreased at coastal area, especially in northern part of the island. Moreover, very high electrical conductivity (EC) levels and their increasing trends were observed in the eastern part, which was ascribable to seawater intrusion by intensive pumping in recent years. Water level decline and EC rise in the coastal area are expected to continue despite the present strict control on additional groundwater development.
