  • Ipomoea heptaphylla Sweet and Murdannia nudiflora (L.) Brenan have been discovered on arable land on Jejudo Island, Korea. Ipomoea heptaphylla can easily be distinguished from other Korean Ipomoea species by certain distinctive features, which include thin and coiled long pedicels, small corollas, and, most importantly, palmatisect leaves with five to seven lobes. Murdannia nudiflora is characterized by the absence of a rhizome, the presence of caducous bracteoles, by its bearing of more than one flower, and by its fruits with two seeds per valve and foveolate-reticulate seeds, distinguishing it from M. keisak. In this study, we report the plants I. heptaphylla and M. nudiflora and provide their morphological descriptions, photographs, distribution, and keys.

  • Foraminifera are unicellular eukaryotes widely distributed in marine and transitional marine environments. They play important roles in marine food webs and geochemical cycles and have physiological properties like the formation of calcareous tests and nitrogen respiration. Research on species diversity, distribution and endemism are essential in biogeography and biodiversity conservation. Here, we report three unrecorded species of foraminifera (Hemirotalia foraminulosa, Planispirillina denticulogranulata and Oolina brevisolenia) collected from Jeju Island and the South Sea (Korea). Planispirillina denticulogranulata is the second Planispirillina species recorded in Korea, which can be distinguished from congeners by its tubercles on the ventral side and grooves on the spiral suture. Hemirotalia foraminulosa is differentiated from the only congener H. calvifacta by multiple-scattered pits on the umbilicus, and it is the first report of Hemirotalia from Korean water. Oolina brevisolenia has specific bifurcating costae that characterize it from other congeners. This study contributes to documentation of the foraminiferal biodiversity in Korea, moreover, provides an essential basis for the expanded studies on modern foraminifera.

  • Ten new species of genus Sarcotragus (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) are described from Geomundo Island and Jejudo Island, Korea. All new species of the Sarcotragus are distinguished from the other reported species of Sarcotragus by the skeletal structure, especially fasciculate primary fibres. The characters of genus Sarcotragus have cylindrical primary fascicles filled with wads of filaments or flattened fascicles. All of the primary fibres are not cored with foreign debris. Secondary fibres have slightly fasciculate branch or plastic-like web. They are all not cored with foreign debris. All skeletal fibres are very irregular. The surface is covered with loose or tight filamentous membrane.

  • The Cymatium Roding, 1798 is a small- to large-sized marine gastropod genus. Three species has been reported thus far for Cymatium in the Korean waters. In general, Cymatium encausticum (Reeve, 1844) is known to occur in tropical seawaters including the Philippine Islands along with its congeners C. gutturnium, C. springsteeni, and C. exile. A single individual of the species was collected from Jejudo Island by SCUBA diving and morphological features were observed using a stereomicroscope. This is the first study to report the occurrence of Cymatium encausticum (Reeve, 1844) from the Korean waters, providing a detailed description of the species with the illustration for the shell morphology.

  • The sponge-dwelling shrimp, Anchistioides compressus Paulson, 1875, is recorded from Munseom Islet, Jejudo Island, Korea for the first time. All specimens were collected inside the orange coloured sponges by trimix diving at depth from 36-45 m on the rocky reef slope. Anchistioides compressus is characterized by the shape of the rostrum, the posterolateral teeth of the sixth somite, stylocerite being well developed, the anterior margin of the scaphocerite sharply produced, and the biunguiculate dactyli of the ambulatory pereiopods, as well as the proportions of the fingers of the second pereiopods. An illustrated description of the specimens and colour photo are provided to aid future recognition.

  • The new genus and species, Jejulea byssolomoides, is described from Jeju Island, Korea. This lichen is characterized by saxicolous, crustose, pale greenish-gray, partly finely filamentous, matt, smooth thallus, prominent convex brown to dark brown ascomata with a concolorous margin constricted at the dark brown base, 300-800 ㎛ diameter, 200-250 ㎛ high, without a distinct proper margin, adhering to the substratum ending in a minute byssoid white external part of cylindrical cells, fusiform 3-5 septate ascospores (17-23 × 4-5 ㎛). Phylogenetic analyses using ITS and mtSSU sequences place Jejulea in the Pilocarpaceae (Lecanorales). The new taxon is closely related to Byssoloma, a cosmopolitan group of foliicolous lichens, which is most diverse in the tropics. Like Byssoloma, Jejulea also forms a byssoid apothecial margin.

  • During a survey of sand-burrowing amphipods, a phoxocephalid species, Parametaphoxus asiaensis (Hirayama, 1992), was found on the tidal flat of Yellow Sea and Jeju Island, Korea. The genus Parametaphoxus is reported for the first time in the Korean fauna. In this paper, we describe and illustrate the species, P. asiaensis of the family Phoxocephalidae in detail.
