  • The present study deals with the numerical modelling for the one dimensional contaminant transport through saturated homogeneous and stratified porous media using meshfree method. A numerical algorithm based on element free Galerkin method is developed. A one dimensional form of the advectivediffusive transport equation for homogeneous and stratified soil is considered for the analysis using irregular nodes. A Fortran program is developed to obtain numerical solution and the results are validated with the available results in the literature. A detailed parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of certain key parameters. Effect of change of dispersion, velocity, porosity, distribution coefficient and thickness of layer is studied on the concentration of the contaminant.

  • In comparison with calcium caseinate, delactosed nonfat dry milk has a greater particle size but also a higher bulk density, reflecting the differences in their composition and physical structure. Particles of delactosed nonfat dry milk were bigger than those of nonfat dry milk as a result of swelling and aggregation. The particle size was shown not to be correlated with the bulk density. The differences in particle characteristics between delactosed nonfat dry milk and nonfat dry milk were caused by the removal of lactose producing highly porous particles. The particles of delactosed nonfat dry milk were observed to be much more irregular, rough, hollow, fragile, and swelling as a result of solvent treatment.

  • A combined experimental and numerical effort is presented for investigation of reflection of irregular waves due to rectangular submerged breakwaters. In the numerical model, the Reynolds equations are solved by a finite difference method and k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence analysis. To track the free surface displacement, the volume of fluid method is employed. Numerical predictions of transmission and reflection coefficients are verified by comparing to laboratory measurements. Very reasonable agreements are observed. The reflection coefficients become stronger in proportion to numbers of submerged breakwaters.

  • The present study investigates numerically damping characteristics of irregular waves passing over a permeable seabeds. At first, the numerical model, which is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms and determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulent model, is validated by comparing with existing experimental data. And then, the numerical test on irregular wave damping over a permeable seabeds is performed in case that wave and flume conditions are changed. It is revealed from the numerical results that the more porosity and mean grain are increased, the more wave damping is increased. Also, the effect of wave period on damping of irregular waves over a permeable seabed is discussed.

  • In this study, the effects of kaolin addition on the properties of reticulated porous diatomite-kaolin composites are investigated. A reticulated porous diatomite-kaolin composite is prepared using the replica template method. The microstructure and pore characteristics of the reticulated porous diatomite-kaolin composites are analyzed by controlling the PPI value (45, 60, and 80 PPI) of the polyurethane foam (which are used as the polymer template), the ball-milling time (8 and 24 h), and the amount of kaolin (0-50 wt. %). The average pore size decreases as the amount of kaolin increases in the reticulated porous diatomite-kaolin composite. As the amount of kaolin increases, it can be determined that the amount of inter-connected pore channels is reduced because the plate-shaped kaolin particles connect the gaps between irregular diatomite particles. Consequently, a higher kaolin percentage affects the overall mechanical properties by improving the pore channel connectivity. The effect of kaolin addition on the basic properties of the reticulated porous diatomite-kaolin composite is further discussed with characterization data such as pore size distribution, scanning electron microscopy images, and compressive strength.

  • Polysilane black powders were synthesized by sonochemical methods from silicon tetrachloride with sodium metal with 37.0% yield. Those black powder materials were found to have fibrous or irregular shapes with round surface. It was found that thermal behaviors of those polysilane black powders were similar to that of hydropolysilanes which was reported earlier. After thermal treatment, black polysilicon was obtained with 57.1% residue yield, and those fibrous or irregular shapes with round surface were intact but lots of small cavities were formed indicating porous structure, and found to be an amorphous state from XRD analysis.

  • Effective thermal conductivity of the porous nuclear fuel has been investigated numerically. Difficulties associated with irregular shape of pore have been overcome by using the Body Fitted Coordinate Systems. A computer code has been developed to solve the governing equation with appropriate boundary conditions by transforming from the Cartesian coordinates to the nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The effects of the porosity have been investigated. For a convenient use of the result, a correlation equation was suggested under the assumption of circular pore. The computation results by the assumption of randomly oriented elliptic pore has been agreed more closely to existing experimental result than that by the assumption of circular pore.

  • To increase the strength of high-purity porous mullite ceramics, ultra fine mullite precursor powders of about 10nm in diameter were deposited at point of contact between primary coarse mullite particles of about 60$\mu\textrm{m}$. The deposited and hetero coagulated structures of ultra fine mullite precursor powders were controlled by pH. The optimum pH condition to form a uniform deposition of mullite powders between coarse mullite particles was in the range from 7 to 8. Deposition of the ultra fine powders did not form at pH < 7 and pH > 10 irregular deposition was observed from pH 8 to 9.
