Goethite, hematite, magnetite and synthesized iron oxide are used as catalysts for Fenton-type oxidation of phenol. The synthesized iron oxides were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The catalytic activity of these materials is classified according to the observed rate of phenol oxidation. The effectiveness of the catalysts followed the sequence: ferrous ion > synthesized iron oxide >> magnetite hematite > goethite. According to these results, the most effective iron oxide catalyst had the structure similar to natural hematite. The surface oxidation state of the catalyst was between magnetite and hematite (+2.5 ~ +3.0). Phenol degraded completely in 40 min at neutral pH (pH = 7). Soluble ferric and ferrous ions were not detected in the filtrate from Fenton reaction solution by AAS. The formation of hydroxyl radicals was confirmed by EPR.

Fenton reaction and iron autoxidation have been debated for the major process in ROS mediated DNA cleavage. We compared both processes on iron oxidation, DNA cleavage, and cyclic voltammetric experiment at different pHs. Both oxidation reactions were preferred at basic pH condition, unlike DNA cleavage. This indicates that iron oxidation and the following steps probably occur separately. The ROS generated from autoxidation seems to be superoxide radical since sod exerted the best inhibition on DNA cleavage when $H_2O_2$ was absent. In comparison of cyclic voltammograms of $Fe^{2+}$ in NaCl solution and phosphate buffer, DNA addition to phosphate buffer induced significant change in the redox cycle of iron, indicating that iron may bind DNA as a complex with phosphate. Different pulse voltammogram in the presence of ctDNA suggest that iron ions are recyclable at acidic pH, whereas they may form an electrically stable complex with DNA at high pH condition.
By studying the characteristics of matrix insulated through heat generated through oxidation of iron powder, the basic research results on the possibility of buffering and applicability of Cold weather concrete as a curing method are presented. In order to prevent freezing due to a sharp decrease in temperature in the initial stage of curing, iron powder (Fe), powder activated carbon, which is a small amount of porous carbonaceous adsorbent, and salt (NaCl) as an oxidizing agent are replaced with iron powder admixture. As the curing temperature increases, the strength tends to increase, and when replacing the admixture at the same curing temperature, the strength slightly decreases. This is determined as a result of generating iron oxide through an oxidation reaction of iron powder, activated carbon, and NaCl generating a large amount of pores in the matrix. In addition, the internal temperature tends to increase as the mixing substitution rate increases, and it is judged that the oxidation heat of the iron powder mixture affects the increase of the internal temperature during curing. The higher the replacement rate of the iron powder mixture, the slightly lower the strength, but it is determined that freezing and melting that may occur in the early stage of curing can be prevented due to an increase in the initial internal temperature.
This research was conducted to investigate effects of acid buffering capacity and soil component in treatment of phenanthrene using electrokinetic-Fenton process. In Hadong clay of high acid buffering and low iron oxide content, it was difficult to oxidize phenanthrene due to shortage of iron catalyst and scavenger effect of carbonate minerals. The desorbed phenanthrene conductive to Fenton oxidation was transported toward cathode by electroosmotic flow. However, in Youngdong illitic clay, oxidation of phenanthrene near anode readily occurred compared to Hadong clay due to high iron content and low acid buffering capacity.
The effect of oxidation-reduction heating conditions on coating adherence of hot-dip galvanized steel containing silicon has beeninvestigated. The presence of a stbke sillicon oxide formed on the steel surface has been shown to be very detrimenal to proper wetting by liquid zinc. When the steel has more than the critical sillicon content neeled to from a stable external oxide, the use of oxidation-reduction method has been found successful in obtaining a good quality, coated product with excellence adhreence. This can be explained by the formation of an iron oxide. The iron oxrtion of the scale is reduced, leaving the stable oxides dispersed in a fresh metallic iron surface layer. This reduced iron surface is easily wetted by the liquid zinc and excellent adherence is obtained.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Pine needle extract on lipid oxidation and free radical reaction in iron sources reacted with active oxygen species. The results were summarized as follow; The pine needle extracts didn`t show a distinct effect on reduction of lipid oxidation if the iron ion didn`t exist in oil emulsion. The pine needle extracts played role as a strong chelating agents to bind iron ion if Ferrous iron(Fe\ulcorner) exist in oil emulsion. Ferric iron(Fe) was lower effect than Ferrous iron(Fe) on free radical reaction in oil emulsion. And also, the Fe\ulcorner reacted with pine needle extract did not show distinct effect on free radical reaction, compared to Fe\ulcorner reacted with pine needle extract. And also, Pine needle extracts reacted with H\ulcornerO\ulcorner were tended to show a low oxygen scavenging ability in case of H\ulcornerO\ulcorner only was existed, compared to those of H\ulcornerO\ulcorner + Fe\ulcorner complex. Pine needle extracts were the most powerful Fe\ulcorner binding agents, compared to other strong synthetic antioxidants such as EDTA and DTPA.
Reduced forms of iron, such as zero-valent ion (ZVI) and ferrous ion (Fe[II]), can activate dissolved oxygen in water into reactive oxidants capable of oxidative water treatment. The corrosion of ZVI (or the oxidation of (Fe[II]) forms a hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) intermediate and the subsequent Fenton reaction generates reactive oxidants such as hydroxyl radical ($^{\bullet}OH$) and ferryl ion (Fe[IV]). However, the production of reactive oxidants is limited by multiple factors that restrict the electron transfer from iron to oxygen or that lead the reaction of $H_2O_2$ to undesired pathways. Several efforts have been made to enhance the production of reactive oxidants by iron-induced oxygen activation, such as the use of iron-chelating agents, electron-shuttles, and surface modification on ZVI. This article reviews the chemistry of oxygen activation by ZVI and Fe(II) and its application in oxidative degradation of organic contaminants. Also discussed are the issues which require further investigation to better understand the chemistry and develop practical environmental technologies.
In order to prevent the oxide formation on the surface of nano-size iron particles and thereby to improve the oxidation resistance, iron nanoparticles synthesized by a chemical vapor condensation method were directly soaked in hexadecanethiol solution to coat them with a polymer layer. Oxygen content in the polymer-coated iron nanoparticles was significantly lower than that in air-passivated particles possessing iron-core/oxide-shell structure. Accordingly, oxidation resistance of the polymer-coated particles at an elevated temperature below $130^{\circ}C$ in air was $10\~40$ times higher than that of the air- passivated particles.
