  • Recently, epidemiological evidence has raised concerns that moderate elevation in body iron stores may increase oxidative stress and the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Onion flesh or peel contains antioxidant such as flavonoids and alk(en)ylcysteine sulphoxides. This study was conducted to examine the effect of onion flesh or peel feeding on antioxidative capacity in aged rats supplemented with high dietary iron. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley male 16-month-old rats weighing $618{\pm}6g$ were acclimated for 10 days with medium-iron diet (35ppm in diet), and blocked into 4 groups according to their body weights and raised for 3 months on either control diets (adequate iron-35ppm or high iron-350ppm) or experimental diets containing onion flesh/peel (5% w/w in diet) with high iron (350ppm). Rats fed high iron-onion peel diet had significantly high quercetin and isorhamnetin levels in plasma whereas rats fed high iron-onion flesh diet did not show. Plasma TBARS level was lowered by onion flesh or peel diet with high iron supplementation. However, there was no significant difference in cellular DNA damage in brain and kidney tissue among all experimental groups. We concluded that high iron diet (10 times higher than requirement) tend to increase oxidative stress and it is plausible that onion flesh or peel feeding enhances antioxidative capacity in the elderly even with iron supplementation.

  • The removal of ferrous iron (Fe(II)) in groundwater is generally achieved by simple aeration or the addition of oxidizing agent. Aeration followed by solid-liquid separation is the most commonly used as physico-chemical treatment method for iron removal. In general aeration has been shown to be very efficient in insolubilizing ferrous iron at the pH level greater than 6.5. In this study pH was maintained over 6.5 using limestone granules under constant aeration to oxidize ferrous iron. In batch experiments, oxidation rate of ferrous iron was investigated under different conditions including limestone granule size. initial concentration of the ferrous iron, pH, temperature and ionic strength in groundwater. The pH in groundwater was presumed as the most important factor determining oxidation rate of ferrous iron. According as the size of the limestone granules decreased, the pH of the iron contaminated water increased quickly and oxidation of the ferrous iron was achieved immediately too. The oxidation rate of the ferrous iron was found to be proportion to initial concentration of the iron contaminated water, temperature and ionic strength, respectively.

  • The effect of dietary supplementation of the two oriental medicinal prescriptions, Sypjeondaebotang or Jahyulyanggeuntang, on iron bioavailability was evaluated in rats which were depleted of iron by being fed an irondeficient diet for 4 weeks. Seventy two iron-depleted rats were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 24) , and fld one of the following experimental diets for 4 (n = 8), 12 (n = 8), and 25 days (n = 8) : Control diet (CD), Sypjeondaebotang-supplemented diet (SD), Jahyulyanggeuntang -supplemented diet (JD). The CD contained 20 mg Fe/kg diet as FeSO4, and the SD or JD was identical except that the respective oriental medicinal prescription extract was included at the level of 4 g/kg diet. Animals fed the SD and JD for 25 days consumed significantly less food (p<0.001), but showed no change in food efficiency ratio compared to those that were fed the CD. Serum iron concentration and transferrin saturation values were significantly higher in rats fed the SD for 25 days compared to those that were fed the CD for the same period (p < 0.05). The values of serum UIBC (p < 0.05) and TIBC (p > 0.05) were lower in rats fed the SD compared to those fed the CD. Dietary supplementation of Sypjeondaebotang during the period of iron repletion significantly increased blood levels of hemoglobin (p < 0.05) and hematocrit (p < 0.01) measured at day 12, and increased mean corpuscular volume (p < 0.05) measured at day 25, compared to the values for the CD rats. Regression analyses of hemoglobin-repletion bioassay data from rats fed the SD and JD showed the relative biological values of 123% and 99%, respectively, calculated against the slope for the CD rats. Apparent iron absorption and retention values were also significantly lower (p < 0.05) in rats fed the SD for 25 days than those for the CD rats. Based on the results from diverse biochemical indices of iron status and the chemical balance study, the effect of Jahyulyanggeuntang on iron bioavailability appears to be less prominent than that for Sypjeondaebotang. Taken together, these results indicate that Sypjeondaebotang has a positive effect in restoring iron depletion by increasing the iron bioavailability in rats.

  • Nutritional anemias are an important nutritional problem affecting large population groups in most developing countries. Many reports on investigations of nutritional anemias have been published and there is good evidence that prevalence of iron deficiency anemias in vulnerable groups is high in many areas of the world. However, there is a general lack of accurate data on its prevalence throughout the world. Methods used to measure different factors have been variable and often of poor quality. Furthermore recent comparison of values obtained in different laboratories have shown a much greater discrepancy in iron binding capacity measurements as compared with serum iron determinations. Since the major cause of these differences appears related to the technique employed, the efforts of the central laboratory will be directed initially to standardization of methodology. My laboratory has been joined interlaboratory comparison of WHO studies of iron standardization. The determination of serum iron, iron-binding capacity and transferrin saturation was done on healthy adults, 79 males and 20 females, who visited hospital for health certificate from January to July 1970. The serum iron was determined by the method of modification of Bothwell and Mallett and total iron blinding capacity by Ramsay method and Bothwell and Mallett method. The results of this study are as follows; 1) The serum iron concentration of seventy nine adult male by the method presented is $131.5{\pm}37.3{\mu}g/100ml\;(range\;52.5{\sim}225.0{\mu}g/100ml)$ and of twenty female adult is $108.5{\pm}40.2{\mu}g/100ml\;(range\;45.0{\sim}202.5{\mu}g/100ml)$. 2) The adult male level of serum iron-binding capacity is $330.9{\pm}48.9{\mu}g/100ml\;and\;adult\;female\;is\;291.2{\pm}55.2{\mu}g/100ml$. 3) The transferring saturation of healthy male is $35.6{\pm}12.8%\;(range\;15.1{\sim}18.0%)\;and\;of\;female\;as\;25.4{\pm}12.4%\;(range\;10.1{\sim}60.0)$.

  • Until now, South Korea does not have either fortification or enrichment program as intervention tools although the addition of micronutrients to foods is for the most part not regulated. The aim of this study was to determine which scenario would most effectively reduce the proportion of the population with low iron intake while not putting other population groups at risk of excessive intakes. In order to investigate potential dietary consequences of iron fortification we analyzed 2 day dietary record data (n=3,955) from the 2001 National Nutrition Surveys. The Proportion of the population consuming dietary iron less than the estimated average requirement (EAR) ranged from $12.4{\sim}87.5%$ depending upon gender and age group. Iron fortification at the level of 100% of Recommended Intake (RI) per 100g to breads and instant o. dried noodles was estimated to result in a 15% decrease of proportion of those with iron less than EAR, while putting 1.4 % of the population greater than the Upper Limit (UL). Iron fortification appeared to be the most effective for the $15{\sim}19$ year old age group, showing 39% reduction of iron intake insufficiency. The results suggest that carefully designed fortification or enrichment to staple foods may contribute to increase dietary iron intakes of Koreans, especially for the young population with a high prevalence of iron inadequacy. As the estimation in this study was based solely upon dietary intake data, iron intake from supplements should be considered in further studies.

  • Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) provides the effect such as enhancement in power system reliability due to limiting fault current in a few miliseconds. The flux-lock type SFCL among various type SFCLs consists of two coils wound on the same iron core and a component using the YBCO thin film. In the SFCL, operation characteristics can be controlled by adjusting the inductances and the winding directions of the coils. In this paper, we investigated the various fault current limiting characteristics according to the voltage level. To analyze the current limiting performance, we compared operational characteristics on the subtractive polarity winding direction on in case of open-loop iron core.

  • Se and Fe are trace minerals acting as antioxidant scavenging free radicals. Iron deficiency is the most frequently reported nutritional deficiency in females. Body iron status are known to be dependent not only upon dietary iron intake, but also upon micro-mineral nutrition and obesity. Antioxidants such as selenium are reported to play an important role on the regulation of erythropoiesis by protecting RBC membrane from antioxidative damage. In this study, iron status in young females and its relationships with selenium status and physique were examined. Serum selenium and iron concentrations were measured by HANARO research reactor using neutron activation analysis method (NAA-method). The proportion with iron deficiency and anemia were 27.1% and 8.6%, respectively in young females, but the proportion with iron deficient anemia was 1.4%. The mean serum selenium level was $12.0\;{\mu}g/dL$ and in normal range in the young women. The study participants were tertiled according to BMI and serum selenium levels. Serum ferritin and iron levels inclined with increasing BMI tertiles. Serum iron and RBC count were higher in middle selenium group than low selenium group. Individuals had significantly lower hematocrit level in the lowest tertile for their serum selenium levels compared with the highest tertile. The serum ferritin level was predicted 25% by BMI and RBC count 26.2% by the serum selenium level and body fat%. In conclusion, this study shows that body iron status in young adult females are influenced by obesity and body selenium status.

  • The ironware production technology is a measure to fathom the society's level of development in time. To understand iron-manufacure methods in the past, various investigations on the fine structures and additions of ironware remains and Iron ingot have been conducted in a way of natural science. This study metallurgically reclassifies remains excavated in iron-manufacture remains located in Beokje, Goyang, which are thought to be in time of Goryeo Dynasty, and draws an inference from the element analysis on the iron-manufacture and smelting technology. Iron ingot samples with a cast iron structure are divided into those with a white cast iron structure and those with a grey cast iron rich in P. The P content of grey cast iron appeared to be the result of adding a flux agent like lime, iron ingot and carbon steel iron ingot with a cast iron structure excavated in the area is regarded as pig iron which was made without a refining process. In this study it seems that two methods of making ironware were used in the area; one is the method of making ironware by pouring cast iron to the casting, and the other is the method of making carbon steel through the refinement of pig iron. It appears that highly even steel structure of carbon steel and a small amount of MnS inclusion are very similar with that of the modern steel to which Mn is artificially added. Nevertheless, these data alone cannot be used to determine the source of Mn in the carbon steel of the excavated from the iron-manufacture remains, which raises the need for further studies on the source and the possibility of carbon steel via the iron-manufacture process of cast iron.

  • The waters throughout Taegu area for 87 points were analysed and according to the analytical data, following unfavorable characteristics for industrial uses were given: (1)Shows strong hardness, (2)Has high ratio of ignition residue to evaporation residue, (3) pH value is over 7, (4) Contains considerable quntities of iron. And then investigated the exchange rate and regeneration level of iron ion using cation exchange resin, Lewatit KS.When the hard water containing 2.2 ppm of iron with 18.4 ppm of calcium and 6.2 ppm of magnesium was passed through the ion exchange resin under $3cc/cm^2/min$ in exhaustant flow rate, exchange rate of iron reached to 42% after 300 hours flow. The exchange efficiency shows abrupt decreasing in initial stage of flow up to 100 hours flow. The exchanger which contains iron was regenerated with 10% sodium hydroxide aqua solution under SV (space velocity) 4. By this method, 57% of iron was eliminated from exchanger while calcium and magnesium are removed as much as 85% and 87% respectively.

  • The analyzed results of the heavy metal concentration of air and soil at the D iron-manufacturing company area were as follows; The concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ in the case area exceeded the air standard level in 3 seasons except summer. The $PM_{10}$ level was similar to the standard level, which was similar to the standard level, which was $50{\mu}g/m^3$. The Pb concentration of air in the case area was $0.13{\mu}g/m^3$, which was slightly higher than $0.11{\mu}g/m^3$ in the control area. The concentration of Cd and Cr were higher in the control area. The heavy metal (Pb) concentration of soil in the case area was $10.7{\mu}g/m^3$, which was higher than that of the control area. For these results, it is necessary for the D iron-manufacturing company area to consider a counter plan for dusts and are duction plan for the heavy metal (Pb).
