복합오염물질 제거를 위한 철과 개량 벤토나이트의 복합층에 관한 연구 (Hybrid Barriers of Iron and Modified-bentonite for the Remediation of Multi-contaminated Water)

  • Hybrid barriers using reduction and immobilization were tested to remediate the groundwater contaminated with multi-pollutants in this study. Iron filings and HDTMA(hexadecyltrimethylammonium)-bentonite were simulated in columns to assess the performance of hybrid barriers for remediation of trichloroethylene(TCE)-contaminated water. TCE reduction rate for the mixture of iron filings and HDTMA-bentonite was about 7 times higher than that for iron filings, only suggesting the reduction of TCE was accelerated when HDTMA-bentonite was mixed with iron filings. TCE reduction rate for the two layers of iron and HDTMA-bentonite was nearly similar to that for iron filings alone, but the partition coefficient($K_d$) for the two layers was 4.5 times higher than for that iron filings only. TCE was immobilized in the first layer with HDTMA-bentonite, and then dechlorinated in the second layer with iron filings. HDTMA-bentonite may contribute to the increase in TCE concentration on iron surface so that more TCE can be reduced. Also, TCE removal in the hybrid barriers was not affected by chromate and naphthalene while the reduction rate of TCE with the co-existing contaminants by iron filings was significantly decreased. Significant TCE removal in this research indicates that the proposed hybrid barrier system has the potential to become the effective remediation alternative during the occurrence of oil shock. Also, if subsurface environments are contaminated with multi-pollutants that contain non-reducible compounds as well as reducible compounds such as TCE, the conventional reactive barriers cannot be applied to this subsurface environment, while the proposed hybrid system can be applied successfully.

Optimization analysis on collection efficiency of vacuum cleaner based on two-fluid and CFD-DEM model

  • The reasonable layout of vacuum cleaner can effectively improve the collection efficiency of iron filings generated in the process of steel production. Therefore, in this study, the CFD-DEM coupling model and two-fluid model are used to calculate the iron filings collection efficiency of vacuum cleaner with different inclination/cross-sectional area, pressure drop and inlet angle. The results are as follows: The CFD-DEM coupling method can truly reflect the motion mode of iron filings in pneumatic conveying. Considering the instability and the decline of the growth rate of iron filings collection efficiency caused by high pressure drop, the layout of 75° inclination is suggested, and the optimal pressure drop is 100Pa. The optimal simulation results based on two-fluid model show that when the inlet angle and pressure drop are in the range of 45°~65° and 70Pa~100Pa, larger mass flow rate of iron filings can be obtained. It is hoped that the simulation results can offer some suggestion to the layout of vacuum cleaner in the rolling mill.

  • This research was conducted to assess the performance of the mixed reactive materials with sand, iron filings, and HDTMA-bentonite for trichloroethylene (TCE) and chromate removal under controlled groundwater flow conditions. TCE and chromate removal rates with the mixtures of iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite were highest among four columns due to reduction by iron filings and sorption by HDTMA-bentonite. The greater capacity of the mixed iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite compared HDTMA-bentonite was due to an enhanced chromate reduction in addition to chromate sorption. The presence of chromate caused greater inhibition of TCE removal in the column with iron filings, while the presence of TCE caused less inhibition of TCE. Also, nitrate caused the decrease in TCE removal relative to chloride. Nitrate ions may also significantly affect TCE reduction rates by competing for electrons with the chlorinated compounds. The anion and co-existed contaminants competing effects should be considered when designed permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) composed of zero valent iron for field applications to remediate TCE and chromate.

자기력선 그림을 통한 초등학생들의 자기장 개념 조사 (Elementary Students' Conceptions of Magnetic Field by Drawing lines of Magnetic Field)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine elementary students' conceptions of magnetic fields around various magnets by drawing tasks. A total of 105 elementary students from the 3rd and 6th grade levels were asked to draw how iron filings would arrange around magnets. We classified their drawings of magnetic field lines with some criteria to identify conceptions of magnetic forces and checked them through interviewing about their representative drawing. Through analyzing drawings, we discovered that 40% of elementary students drew the correct arrangement of iron filings around a bar magnet. In the case of two bar magnets in opposite directions, 33% of them drew correct patterns of iron dust and around two magnets in the same direction only 20% did well. Only 2.9% and 7.6% of students presented the correct drawings of magnetic fields near a disc and a horseshoe magnet. While 3rd grade students were supposed to be poor in drawings of magnetic fields around a loose and a dense coil which was not learned about, only 31% and 23% of 6th grade students who have just studied electromagnetism properly drew patterns of iron dust. This shows that only one quarter of students understood the magnetic filed lines even after instruction of electromagnetism. Many of 6th grade students learned a solenoid becomes just as a permanent magnet, but very few of them correctly drew a magnetic field line could distinguish between the iron dust around a loose and dense coil. After interviewing students, it is found that students consider magnetic forces to be existed only in parts of magnet because many of them drew magnetic field line of a specific areas around magnets. Students had misconceptions that magnetic forces exist only on the poles not in the middle around a horseshoe magnet. Also the disc-shape magnet made students to reveal various types of misconceptions: N- and S-poles are mixed in a whole magnet and right part of a disc-shape magnet is N-pole, left part is S-pole. Students who had not studied magnetic fields of around a magnet and electromagnets could not draw the correct patterns of iron dust suggest that it is indispensable for students to teach how patterns of iron filings would represent a visual image of magnetic fields in order to understand magnetic fields.

  • Remediation of groundwater using zero valent iron filings has received considerable attention in recent years. However, zero valent iron is gradually transformed to iron(III) oxides at permeable reactive barriers, so the reduction of iron(III) oxides can enhance the longevity of the reactive barriers. In this study, microbial reduction of Fe(III) was performed in anaerobic condition. A medium contained nutrients similar to soil solution. The medium was autoclaved and deoxygenated by purging with 99.99% $N_2$ and pH was buffered to 6, while the temperature was regulated as 2$0^{\circ}C$. Activity of iron reducing bacteria were not affected by chlorinated organics but affected by iron(III) oxide. Although perchloroethylene(PCE) was not degraded with only ferric oxide, PCE was reduced to around 50% with ferric oxide and microorganism. It shows that reduced iron can dechlorinate PCE.

  • Remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated organics, nitro aromatics, and heavy metals using zero valent iron (ZVI) filings has paid considerable attention in recent years. When the contaminants of high concentration leaked abundantly in subsurface environment, permeable reactive barrier technology using iron filing is taken a long time for the remediation of contaminated groundwater, The problem of contaminant shock is able to be solved using surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium, HDTMA) modified bentonite (SMB) as immobilizing material. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop the combined remediation technology using conventional permeable reactive and immobilizing barrier for the enhanced decontamination of chlorinated compounds. Four column experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the mixed reactive materials with Ottawa sand, iron filing, and HDTMA-bentonite for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal under controlled groundwater flow conditions. TCE reduction rates with sand/iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite were highest among four column due to dechlorination of TCE by iron filing and sorption of TCE by SMB.

  • Rusted iron could retain activity to redox-sensitive pollutants in batch reactor. Flow-through columns packed with permeable reactive iron filings (Fe$^{0}$ ) between soil and sand layers were used to evaluate the applicability of bio-enhanced iron barriers to treat explosives-contaminated groundwater. One column was bioaugmented with municipal anaerobic sludge to evaluate the enhancement of biodegradation. Military contaminants (RDX, HMX, TNT, 2,4DNT, 2,6DNT), which coexist in soils at military sites, were completely removed in the bioaugmented Fe$^{0}$ layer after 8 months of operation. Overall, this research suggests that Fe$^{0}$ barriers can effectively clean up groundwater contaminated with military explosives, and that treatment efficiency can be enhanced by bioaugmentation.

  • 레일을 궤도회로로 이용하는 신호 설비의 경우, 레일 주변에 쌓이는 쇠가루는 궤도회로 상에 이상 신호유발의 원인이 되기도 한다. 차량의 곡선 주행 구간에서는 레일과 차륜의 마찰이 심하여 차륜의 마모에 의한 쇠가루가 발생하게 되고, 이렇게 발생한 레일 상의 쇠가루로 인해 이상 신호가 종종 발생하기 때문에 지하철 운영사의 쇠가루 제거를 위한 방안 마련이 시급한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 콘크리트 궤도 상 레일 주변의 쇠가루를 포집하기 위한 영구자석 적용 마그넷 포집장치를 소개하였다. 또한 기본 설계 및 수치 해석적 기법을 이용하여 마그넷 포집장치의 다양한 특성 분석을 수행하였으며, 이를 통하여 콘크리트 궤도상의 쇠가루 포집을 위한 마그넷 포집장치의 실제 상용노선 차량에의 적용 가능성을 검토하였다.

ZanF를 이용한 질산성 질소 환원 및 암모늄부산물 동시제거

  • Reduction of nitrate by zero valent iron (Fe$^{0}$ ) has been previously studied, but the proper treatment for the by-product of ammonium has not been reported. However, in terms of nitrogen contamination, ammonium may be regarded as another form of nitrogen contaminants since it can be oxidized to nitrate again under aerobic conditions. This study is focused on simultaneous removal of nitrate and its by-product of ammonium, with the ZanF (Zeolite anchored Fe), a product derived from zeolite modified by Fe(II) chloride followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Batch experiments were performed without buffer at two different pH condition with ZanF, iron filing, Fe(II)-sorbed zeolite, and pure zeolite to estimate the nitrate reduction and the ammonium production. At higher pH, removal rate of nitrate was reduced in both ZanF and iron filings. ZnF removed 60 % of nitrate at initial pH of 3.3 with no production of ammonium, while iron filing showed equivalent production of ammonium to the reduced amount of nitrate. In terms of nitrogen contamination, ZanF removed about 60 % and 40 % at initial pH of 3.3 and 6, respectively, while iron filing presented negligible removal against total nitrogen including nitrate and ammonium.

과학적 관찰의 의미와 탐구과정에서 학생들의 관찰 행동 분석 (The Meaning of Scientific Observation and an Analysis of Students' Observational Activity)

  • 관찰은 과학자는 물론 과학교육자에게 매우 중요한 것으로 취급되어왔고 탐구수업에서도 중요하게 취급되어왔다. 그러나 이와 같은 중요성에도 불구하고 지금까지 그 의미가 미분화된 상태로 사용되어왔다. 본 연구에서는 이론적 연구와 학생들의 관찰진술문을 토대로 관찰의 본성을 파악하고, 학생의 관찰 행동을 범주화하고 분류할 수 있는 분류 틀을 개발하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 촛불관찰 과제, 자석 주위의 철가루 관찰 과제, 이중진자 관찰 과제, 직렬로 연결된 2개의 꼬마전구의 밝기 관찰 과제에 적용하여 중학교 고등학교 그리고 대학생들을 대상으로 학생의 관찰 행동을 분류해 보았다. 연구 결과, 초보적 관찰을 좌표의 원점으로 하고, 해석적 관찰, 간섭적 관찰, 조작적 관찰이 각각의 축 위에 놓이는 3차원 틀을 설정할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 분류 틀에 따라 학생들의 응답을 분류한 결과 첫째, 관찰로 볼 수 없는 사례들을 포함하여 학생들의 거의 모든 응답을 본 기준에 따라 분류할 수 있어 본 분류 틀이 학생들의 관찰 진술문을 분석하는데 유용함을 볼 수 있었다. 둘째, 학생들의 응답유형은 각 과제별로 다르게 나타났다. 예를 들면, 가장 많은 초보적 관찰을 보인 과제는 이중 진자이었고 가장 적은 경우는 꼬마전구의 밝기 관찰과제이었다. 셋째, 학년에 따라서도 관찰유형이 상당히 다르게 나타남을 볼 수 있었다. 예를 들면, 중학생과 고등학생의 경우 이중진자와 자석 주위의 철가루 관찰 과제에서는 조작적 관찰을 전혀 보이지 않은 반면, 꼬마전구의 밝기 관찰과제에서는 상당한 비율의 조작적 관찰을 보였다. 또한 관찰로는 볼 수 없는 상당수의 사례가 있었다. 과학교육에서 관찰은 매우 중요하게 취급되어왔고 많은 평가준거에 관찰이 포함되어 있다. 그러나 현행의 관찰의 의미는 너무 포괄적으로 보인다. 따라서 본 연구결과 같이 관찰의 유형을 좀 더 세분하여 나타낸다면, 과학학습은 물론 평가에서도 좀 더 상세한 지도와 평가가 이루어 질 것으로 기대된다. 또한 계속연구로 좀 더 다양한 대상과 과제에 대하여 연구함으로서 관찰의 분류 틀을 수정 보완할 필요성이 있다.
