Corrosion of rebar in carbon fiber reinforced polymer bonded reinforced concrete

  • Several reinforced concrete structures that get deteriorated by rebar corrosion are retrofitted using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). When rebar comes in direct contact with CFRP, rebar may corrode, as iron is more active than carbon. Progression of corrosion of rebar in strengthened RC structures has been carried out when rebar comes in direct contact with CFRP. The experimentation is carried out in two phases. In phase I, corrosion of bare steel bar is monitored by making its contact with CFRP. In phase II, concrete specimens with surface bonded CFRP were casted and subjected to the realistic exposure conditions keeping direct contact between rebar and CFRP. Progression of corrosion has been monitored by various parameters: Half-cell potential, Tafel extrapolation and Linear Polarisation Resistance. On termination of exposure, to find residual bond stress between rebar and concrete, pull-out test was performed. Rebar in contact with CFRP has shown substantially higher corrosion. The level of corrosion will be more with more area of contact.

UNS G41400 강의 인산염 표면 처리에 따른 국부 부식 저항성 (Effect of Phosphate Surface Treatment on the Localized Corrosion Resistance of UNS G41400 Steel)

  • This study investigated the localized corrosion behavior of a UNS G41400 steel surface treated with manganese phosphate. The phosphate coating, primarily composed of oxygen (O), phosphorus (P), and manganese (Mn) elements, had an approximate thickness of 6 ㎛. The particles comprising the coating varied in size by several micrometers; smaller particles were mainly composed of O, P, Mn, and iron (Fe) elements, indicating incomplete formation of the manganese phosphate film. Potentiodynamic polarization curves revealed a decrease in anodic current after surface treatment and a shift in corrosion potential toward the noble direction after treatment. After immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 96 hours, localized corrosion was observed, with some regions retaining residual phosphate film. Even though localized corrosion occurred on the treated surface, it was less severe than that on the untreated UNS G41400 steel surface. These findings suggest that manganese phosphate coating improved resistance to localized corrosion.

Evaluation of Metals (Al, Fe, Zn) in Alternative Fuels by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in Two Electrode Cell

  • Many kinds of alternative fuels such as biodiesel, ethanol, methanol, and natural gas have been developed in order to overcome the limited deposits in fossil fuels. In some cases, the alternative fuels have been reported to cause degrade materials. The corrosion rates of metals were measured by immersion test, a kind of time consuming test because low conductivity of these fuels was not allowed to employ electrochemical tests. With twin two-electrode cell newly designed for the study, however, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test was successfully applied to evaluation of the corrosion resistance ($R_p$) of zinc, iron, aluminum, and its alloys in an oxidized biodiesel and gasoline/ethanol solutions and the corrosion resistance from EIS was compared with the corrosion rate from immersion test. In biodiesel, $R_p$ increased in the order of zinc, iron, and aluminum, which agreed with the corrosion resistance measured from immersion test. In addition, on aluminum showing the best corrosion resistance ($R_p$), the effect of magnesium as an alloying element was evaluated in gasoline/ethanol solutions as well as the oxidized biodiesel. $R_p$ increased with addition of magnesium in gasoline/ethanol solutions containing chloride and the oxidized biodiesel. In the mean while, in gasoline/ethanol solutions containing formic acid, Al-Mg alloy added 1% magnesium had the highest $R_p$ and the further addition of magnesium decreased $R_p$. It can be explained with the fact that the addition of more than 1% magnesium increases the passive current density of Al-Mg alloys.

군용차량용 엔진일체형 직렬 발전기 부식 방지에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Corrosion Prevention of the Integral Series Generator for Military Vehicles)

  • 군용차량은 별도의 발전기 장착공간을 마련하지 않고 엔진과 연결되어 발전하는 엔진일체형 직렬 하이브리드 발전기를 통해 전력을 생산한다. 그러나 발전기와 엔진 간 연결 방식이 가지는 기계적 특성에 따라 내부 방청 및 윤활용 그리스가 비산하여 산화철이 발생했다. 산화철이 시동기에 고착되어 시동성능이 저하되고 기어마모에 따른 레틀 소음이 증대되는 문제가 발생하였다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 엔진의 연결 스플라인 재질 및 표면처리를 개선하고 형상을 그리스 밀봉형으로 변경하여 내부의 산화철 발생을 방지하였다. 축계를 구성하는 발전기 연결기의 형상이 변경됨에 따라 비틀림 내구 시험을 통해 구조의 건전성을 확인하였다. 또한 실차 부하시험을 통하여 내부 부식 없이 목표한 내구수명 동안 부식이 발생하지 않음을 검증하였다. 그리스 비산 방지구조가 실제로 산화철의 발생을 억제함으로써 발전기에서 발생하는 소음을 감소시키는지 확인할 수 있었다. 본 논문은 엔진과 변속기 사이에 장착하는 직렬 하이브리드 발전기에서 발생하는 배부 부식을 방지하여 시동기의 성능저하 현상과 소음 발생 현상에 대한 근본적인 해결방안을 제시하였다고 할 수 있다.

Intepretation of Faradaic Impedance for Corrosion Monitoring

  • A polarization resistance is generally used to estimate the corrosion rate in the corrosion monitoring by an electrochemical impedance method. When the Faradaic impedance has a time constant due to the reaction intermediate, the electrochemical impedance describes more than one loop on the complex plane. For example, the electrochemical impedance of iron in acidic solution shows capacitive and inductive loops on the complex plane. In this case, the charge transfer resistance and the polarization resistance are determined at middle and low frequency ranges, respectively. Which should be selected for corrosion resistance in corrosion monitoring, the charge transfer resistance or the polarization resistance'? In the present paper, the above-mentioned question is examined theoretically and experimentally.

급수관에서 관재에 따른 부식특성과 미생물 재성장 고찰 (Influence of Pipe Materials on Corrosion and Bacteria Regrowth in A Model Home Plumbing System)

  • This study performed in order to evaluate the effects of pipe materials on corrosion and bacteria regrowth using a laboratory scale batch test. Two varieties of feed water with different microbial conditions were selected: tap water, surface river water (Han River water), and five pipe materials; carbon steel, copper, galvanized iron, stainless steel, and PVC, Carbon steel and galvanized iron pipes showed higher corrosion rates than other materials. In terms of attached bacterial growth, pipes with PVC and stainless steel showed higher bacteria concentration compared to other materials. Pseudomonas vesicularis was the predominant bacteria found on biofilm. The behavior of bacterial growth in the pipes was observed using a scanning electron microscope.

  • Iron containing a high amount of chromium is known to be inferior to ductility due to ${\sigma}$ phase formation so that it is generally difficult to apply the plastic deformation process although the alloy possesses a superior characteristics of an excellent corrosion resistance. In this study, Fe-50mass%Cr alloy was melted using high purity powder and the deformation behavior has been investigated by cold rolling and tensile test. The tensile test yielded that the alloy revealed a serration at an early stage of tensile deformation and then the serrated flow vanished to change to a normal work hardening flow at the later stage. The former was governed by twin formation process, the latter by dislocation multiplication one, bringing about a high ductility of 20% or over. The reduction ratio in cold rolling was attained as high as 90%, thus the high corrosion-resistant alloy is able to possess a high ductility.

  • 암모니아 대신 에탄올아민은 원자력 발전소 2차계통수에서 pH를 증가시켜 철 부식을 억제하고, 증기발생기 전열관의 건전성을 제고하기 위해 사용하고 있다. 에탄올아민은 암모니아와 물리화학적 성질이 다르므로, 증기발생기에 유입되는 부식생성물의 용해와 흡착, 이온성 불순물의 잠복현상에 미치는 영향이 다르다. 본 연구에서는 온도가 증가함에 따라 암모니아와 에탄올아민이 부식생성물에 대한 용해와 흡착, 이온성 불순물의 잠복현상에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 2차 계통수의 pH제어제로서 에탄올아민은 암모니아보다 증기발생기 슬러지의 철산화물에 많이 흡착되어 철산화물의 용해도를 증가시키므로 퇴적된 슬러지의 양을 감소시키며, 또한 슬러지에 홉착된 불순물의 양을 감소시켜 잠복 현상을 억제할 것으로 판단된다.

선박 엔진의 실린더 라이너용 합금주철의 부식마멸에 미치는 분위기의 영향 (Effect of Atmosphere on Corrosive Wear of Alloy Cast Iron for Cylinder Liner of Large Ship Engine)

  • The engine of a large ship operates under wet conditions using a fuel such as bunker C oil, which includes sulfur and many impurities. A cylinder liner made of cast iron is very susceptible to damage such as scuffing on the surface. This scuffing can reliably be attributed to the destruction of the oil film and the corrosion wear caused by water and sulfur included in the fuel, along with abrasion impurities and poor lubricants. In this study, a reciprocating friction and wear test was carried out with a cast iron specimen, which was used to simulate an engine cylinder in a corrosive environment. Base-oil and stirred oil containing distilled water, NaCl solution, and dilute sulfuric acid were used as lubricants. The friction surface was analyzed using a microscope and EDAX, and the friction coefficient was measured using a load-cell under each experimental condition. We then attempted to investigate the damage to the cylinder liner using the results.
