  • The chloride ion attack on the passive iron oxide layer of reinforcement steel embedded in concrete under variable temperature environment is influenced by several parameters and some of them still need to be further investigated in more detail. Different school of thoughts exist between past researchers and the data is limited in the high temperature and high chloride concentration range which is necessary with regards to setting boundary conditions for enhancement of tafel diagram model presented in this research. The objective of this paper is to investigate the detrimental coupled effects of chloride and temperature on corrosion of reinforced concrete structures in the high range by incorporating classical Tafel diagram chloride induced corrosion model and laboratory controlled experimental non-linear effect of temperature on corrosion of rebar embedded in concrete.

  • The protective effects of high levels of dietary iron, copper, zinc or protein on lead toxicity were studied In chicks. Growth retardation, reduction of feed intake, anemia and accumulation of lead in the bone and kidney were observed in chicks fed a diet containing 500mg lead as chloride per kg of feed for 42 days. Early changes due to ingested lead were inhibition of red blood cell ${\delta}$-aminolevulinic acid dehydrase at all doses and no effect of iron, copper, zinc or protein addition were observed. Tibia lead accumulation was reduced in chicks receiving additional dietary iron or zinc compared to the lead only group but increased in chicks given supplementary protein. Decreased body weight gain was overcome by supplementary zinc or protein in chicks fed lead but not by supplementary iron. Overall the results of this study show that lead poisoning can be partly reduced by providing supplementary iron, zinc or protein, but the interaction of these element remained to be elucidated.

  • Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional problem worldwide. Oral iron supplementation programs have failed because of noncompliance and gastrointestinal toxicity. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of alginate gel bead as an oral controlled release system of iron supplements and increase the stability of iron succinyl casein (ISC). Alginate beads containing ISC were prepared by the gelation of sodium alginate with calcium cations. The release profiles of ISC were investigated according to the concentration of polymer, the drug/sodium alginate ratio, the concentration and type of cation, curing time and pH of calcium chloride solution. • The sword with a ring pommel, which was excavated from the first stone chamber of the ancient tombs of Jeongchon Village in Naju, is a sword with a pentagon undecorated ring pommel consisting of a mother sword and two child swords. The sword with an undecorated ring pommel of Jeongchon comprises a ring pommel, a hilt, a knife, and a knife end decoration. This sword was coated with lacquer. The ring pommel is an iron frame covered with silver plate; however the silver tarnished into a light purple due to silver chloride corrosion, and iron corrosion originated from the inside is visible on the surface. Silver chloride corrosion is produced when silver objects are exposed to water, dissolved salts, and dissolved chloride ions when in a buried state. It changes objects into powder, making it difficult to preserve original shapes. The other silver artifacts found in the Jeongchon ancient tombs show similar signs of corrosion. The results of X-ray irradiation and a CT analysis showed that the sword had a ring at the end of the handle, a T-shaped hilt, and was probably connected to the handle end of a knife. If the shape of the mother sword can be inferred from the child swords, the mother sword had a ring pommel, decorations of the handle, covered with silver plate, and a gold ring and a silver line wound around the handle. It is assumed that the ring pommel was connected to the knife by welding because no holes were observed. The end decoration of the knife was made by using an iron plate formed into a shape, half covered by silk, and the other half decorated with silver plate and a gold ring. The sword with an undecorated ring pommel excavated from the ancient tombs of Jeongchon Village comprises the metals of gold, silver, and iron, and includes features of Baekje, Silla, and Gaya, which highlights the influence of surrounding historic sites and various cultures.

  • An iron-fortified whey protein concentrate (Fe-WPC) was prepared by addition of ferric chloride to concentrated whey. A large part of the iron in the Fe-WPC existed as complexes with proteins such as ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin. The bioavailability of iron from Fe-WPC was evaluated using iron-deficient rats, in comparison with heme iron. Rats were separated into a control group and an iron-deficiency group. Rats in the control group were given the standard diet containing ferrous sulfate as the source of iron throughout the experimental feeding period. Rats in the iron-deficiency group were made anemic by feeding on an Fe-deficient diet without any added iron for 3 wk. After the iron-deficiency period, the iron-deficiency group was separated into an Fe-WPC group and a heme iron group fed Fe-WPC and hemin as the sole source of iron, respectively. The hemoglobin content, iron content in liver, hemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) and apparent iron absorption rate were examined when iron-deficient rats were fed either Fe-WPC or hemin as the sole source of iron for 20 d. Hemoglobin content was significantly higher in the rats fed the Fe-WPC diet than in rats fed the hemin diet. HRE in rats fed the Fe-WPC diet was significantly higher than in rats fed the hemin diet. The apparent iron absorption rate in rats fed the Fe-WPC diet tended to be higher than in rats fed the hemin diet (p = 0.054). The solubility of iron in the small intestine of rats at 2.5 h after ingestion of the Fe-WPC diet was approximately twice that of rats fed the hemin diet. These results indicated that the iron bioavailability of Fe-WPC was higher than that of hemin, which seemed due, in part, to the different iron solubility in the intestine.

  • Pure iron, Fe-0.4, and 1.2 wt.%Cu alloys were examined by conducting the electrochemical techniques in the weakly alkaline solution, pH9, controlled by $Ca(OH)_2$, solution added with 0.02M NaCl. The $R_P$ measured from ac impedance, selected 10 kHz and 10mHz, in weakly alkaline solutions containing chloride ions indicated that the addition of copper up to 1.2wt.% into the pure iron significantly improved the pitting resistance of iron. In contrast to alloy, the pure iron showed the rapid pitting occurrences in drying period. During the drying period, the corrosion potential of pure iron was shifted to less noble value, pitting initiation.

  • Beryllium copper has been known to be an important material for the various fields of industry because it can be used for mechanical and electrical/electronic components that are subjected to elevated temperatures (up to $400^{\circ}C$ for short times). Blade type tip for probing the cells of liquid crystal display(LCD) was fabricated using beryllium copper foil. The dry film resist was employed as a mask for patterning of the blade type tip. The beryllium copper foil was etched using hydrochloric acidic iron-chloride solution. The concentration, temperature, and composition ratio of hydrochloric acidic iron-chloride solution affect the etching characteristics of beryllium copper foil. Nickel with the thickness of $3{\mu}m$ was electroplated on the patterned copper beryllium foil for enhancing its hardness, followed by electroplating gold for increasing its electrical conductivity. Finally, the dry film resist on the bridge was removed and half of the nickel was etched to complete the blade type tip.

  • The present study investigates treatment methods for removal of arsenic from wastewater. The granular activated carbon (GAC) with the coating of iron chloride ($FeCl_3$) was used for the treatment of a low concentration of arsenic from wastewater. Batch experiments were performed to investigate the synthesis of Fe-GAC (Iron coated granular activated carbon), effects of pH, adsorption kinetics and the Langmuir model. The synthesized Fe-GAC with 0.1 M $FeCl_3$ shows best removal efficiency. Adsorption studies were carried out in the optimum pH range of 4-6 for arsenic removal. The Fe-GAC showed promising results by removing 99.4% of arsenic. In the adsorption isotherm studies, the observed data fitted well with the Langmuir models. In continuous column study showed that As(V) could be removed to below 0.25 mg/L within 1,020 pore volume. Our results suggest that the surface modified granular activated carbon treated with $FeCl_3$ for effective removal of arsenic from wastewater.

  • A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate the nitrate removal from groundwater using Iron chloride(III) coated activated carbon (ICCAC). The breakthrough profiles of two ionic species, such as nitrate and sulfate showed that nitrate was selectively exchanged with chloride in ICCAC. The $FeCl_3$-coated activated carbon produced about 26 BV (Bed volume) of throughout when treating groundwater containing about $25\;mg/\iota\;of\;NO_3-N$. The regeneration of ICCAC with 1M KC1 was effective at a flow rate of 4 BV/hr. The ion exchange technology seems to be suitable technology for the treatment of small volumes of groundwater polluted by nitrate.

  • Efficient removal of nickel from the ferric chloride etching solution has been studied. At first, $Fe^{3+}$ was reduced to $Fe^{2+}$ by the electrolytic iron flake or the waste shadow mask iron plate. And then, $Ni^{2+}$ was removed from the solution by electrolytic iron powder. Under the optimum conditions the reduced rates of nickel were 99 % and 98%, respectively at the initial $Ni^{2+}$ concentrations of 1.0% and 0.1%. Sludge formed during reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in the solution were analyzed by XRD and SEM.
