The dependence of the catalytic properties of horseradish peroxidase on the structural changes of ionic liquids was investigated with two water-miscible ionic liquids, N-butyl-3methypyridinium tetraftuoroborate ([$BMP_y$][$BF_4$]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([BMIM][$MeSO_4$]), each of which shares an anion ($BF_4^-$) or a cation ($BMIM^+$) with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetraftuoroborate ([BMIM][$BF_4$]), respectively. The oxidation of guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol) with $H_2O_2$was used as a model reaction. In order to minimize the effect of solution viscosity on the kinetic constants of the enzymatic catalysis, the enzymatic reactions for the kinetic study were performed in water-ionic liquid mixtures containing 25% (v/v) ionic liquid at maximum. Similarly to the previously reported results for [BMIM][$BF_4$], as the concentration of [$BMP_y$][$BF_4$] increased, the $K_m$value increased with a decrease in the $k_{cat}$value: the $K_m$value increased markedly from 2.8 mM in 100% water to 12.6 mM in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid, indicating that ionic liquid significantly weakens the binding affinity of guaiacol to the enzyme. On the contrary, [BMIM][$MeSO_4$] decreased the Km value to 1.4 mM in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid. [BMIM][$MeSO_4$] also decreased $k_{cat}$more than 3-folds [from 13.8 $s^{-1}$in 100% water to 4.1 $s^{-1}$in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid]. These results indicate that the ionic liquids interact with the enzyme at the molecular level as well as at a macroscopic thermodynamic scale. Specifically, the anionic component of the ionic liquids influenced the catalysis of horseradish peroxidase in different ways.
Purpose: To investigate viscosity and wettability of hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions according to supplementation of lysozyme and/or peroxidase, and different ionic strength and pH conditions. Methods: Solutions containing HA were prepared using distilled deionized water (DDW) and simulated salivary buffer (SSB) in different conditions. Different concentrations of hen egg-white lysozyme and bovine lactoperoxidase was added into HA solutions. HA solutions with antimicrobials in different ionic strength and pH conditions were prepared. Viscosity was measured using cone-and-plate digital viscometer at six different shear rates and wettability on acrylic resin and Co-Cr alloy was determined by contact angle. Results: The viscosity values of HA dissolved in DDW were decreased in order of HA, HA containing lysozyme, HA containing peroxidase, and HA containing lysozyme and peroxidase. The viscosity values for HA in DDW were decreased as the concentration of lysozyme and/or peroxidase increased. However, the viscosity values for HA in SSB showed no significant changes according to the concentration of lysozyme and/or peroxidase. The viscosity values of HA solutions were inversely proportional to ionic strength and pH. The contact angle of HA solutions showed no significant differences according to tested surface materials, addition of lysozyme and/or peroxidase, and different ionic strength and pH conditions. Contact angles on acrylic resin by HA solutions in all tested conditions were much higher than those by human saliva. Conclusions: The rheological properties of HA supplemented with lysozyme and/or peroxidase in different ionic strength and pH conditions were objectively confirmed, indicating the possibility of HA with lysozyme and/or peroxidase as main components in the development of effective saliva substitutes.
This study has been carried out to determine the seasonal characteristics of concentration of various ionic (CI-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, NH+, K+, Ca2+) and heavy metallic (Pb, Mn, Cu, Ni) species in Pusan from August 1997 to April 1998. The concentrations of CI-, Na+, K+ were higher during summer with 2.98 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/㎥. Seasonal variation of total concentration of but the concentration of NH4+ was higher during winter with 2.46${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/㎥. Seasonal variation of total concentration of heavy metals(Pb, Cu, Mn, Ni) were 186.0 ng/㎥ in summer, 222.6 ng/㎥ in autumn, and 135.83 ng/㎥ in winter. Over the seasons inspected, the concentration of Mn was higher in coarse particles than fine particles and concentration of Ni was higher in fine particles than coarse particles. during yellow sand period, the concentration of TSP was increased about two times than that of other period. SO42-, Ca2+ concentrations were higher than other ionic components because of soil particles. The concentration of Ni showed 94.62ng/㎥ was increased about 4~5 times than other period. Principal component of the yellow sand, SO42-, Ca2+ could be discreased by rainfall and washout effect of atmospheric aerosol was higher in coarse particles than fine particles. Results from PCA(principal component analysis) showed that major pollutant was NaCl by seasalt particulate and (NH4)2SO4.
The number concentrations and the water soluble ionic concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ have measured at Gosan site in Jeju, Korea, from March 2010 to December 2010, to clarify their characteristics. $PM_{2.5}$ number concentrations vary from 22.57 to $975.65particles/cm^3$ with an average value of $240.41particles/cm^3$, which have been recorded evidently high in spring season as compared with those in other season. And the concentrations in small size ranges are greatly higher than those in large size ranges, so the number concentration in the size range $0.25{\sim}0.45{\mu}m$ has more than 94% of the total number concentration of $PM_{2.5}$. The major ionic components in $PM_{2.5}$ are $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$, which are mainly originated from anthropogenic sources, on the other hand, the concentrations of $Cl^-$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ are recorded relatively lower levels. The concentrations of the major ionic components are very high in spring season, but the concentration levels of the other components are recorded significantly high in winter season. On the other hand, in summer season, the lowest concentration levels are observed for overall components as well as the sum of them. The concentration ratios of nss-$SO{_4}^{2-}/SO{_4}^{2-}$ and nss-$Ca^{2+}/Ca^{2+}$ are 98.1% and 88.9%. And the concentration ratio of $SO{_4}^{2-}/NO_3{^-}$(3.64) is greatly higher than the value in urban area due to no large $NO_x$ emission sources in the measurement. In addition, the correlation and the factor analysis for the number and the ionic concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ are performed to identify their sources. From the Pearson correlation analysis and the factor analysis, it can be suggested that the smaller parts(< $0.5{\mu}m$) of $PM_{2.5}$ is contributed by anthropogenic sources, but the sources of the remaining larger parts of $PM_{2.5}$ are not able to be specified sources in this study.
Ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of a mixed polymer matrix consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and cyanoresin type M (CRM) with various lithium salts and plasticizer were examined. The CRM used was a copolymer of cyanoethyl pullulan and cyanoethyl poly(vinyl alcohol) with a molar ratio of 1:1, mixed plasticizer was ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) at a volume ratio of 1:1. The conductive behavior of polymer electrolytes in the temperature range of $298{\sim}338\;K$ was investigated. The $PEG/LiClO_4$ complexes exhibited the highest ionic conductivity of ${\sim}10^{-5}S/cm$ at $25^{\circ}C$ with the salt concentration of 1.5 M. In addition, the plasticized $PEG/LiClO_4$ complexes exhibited improvement of ionic conductivity. However, their complexes showed decreased mechanical properties. The improvement of ionic conductivity and mechanical properties could be obtained from the polymer electrolytes by using CRM. The highest ionic conductivity of PEG/CRM/$LiClO_4$/(EC-PC) was $5.33{\time}10^{-4}S/cm$ at $25^{\circ}C$.

Adsorbability of ionic and nonionic pharmaceuticals was studied using granular activated carbon(GAC). In a batch adsorption test of muticomponent solution, 500 mg/L of GAC dose removed all target compounds between 94 and 98% at initial concentration of 10 ${\mu}g/L$. Adsorption of ionic pharmaceuticals increased as pH was lowered toward to pKa, however adsorption capacity of nonionic pharmaceuticals showed insignificant variation with the changing pH. The enhanced adsorption capacity of ionic pharmaceuticals at lower pH was attributed to the corresponding increase in the molecular form of ionic pharmaceuticals with carboxylic group at low pH. In addition, decrease of pH increased hydrogen ion concentration in the bulk solution and the protons bound to the available sites on the carbon enhanced the removal of the ionic pharmaceuticals from solution. After 40 days of continuous operation, GAC column showed the removal of target compounds were removed by $93{\sim}99%$ at 15 min of EBCT mainly due to adsorption mechanism of GAC. At shorter EBCT than 15 min, breakthrough of CA, IBP and GFZ occurred earlier than the other ionic and nonionic pharmaceuticals. effect of EBCT on adsorption of nonionic pharmaceuticals was greater than ionic ones. This study showed that persitent pharmaceuticals found in drinking water treatment could be effectively controlled by adsorption in GAC process.
This paper investigated environmental effects for passive, air-breathing, and vapor-feeding direct methanol fuel cells. In these experiments, experimental parameters are temperature($30^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity(25%, 50%, 75%). From these experimental results, the water contents play a key role in terms of optimal ionic conductivity at the cathode catalyst layer. In case of pure methanol feeding, the performance is inversely proportional to the relative humidity. The water generation resulting from methanol crossover maintains ionic conductivity at the cathode. On the contrary, diluted methanol solution (50wt.%) lowers methanol crossover to the cathode. In order to increase ionic conductivity, the relatively high humidity is required to the cathode catalyst layer for the water generation. The relative humidity scales with the performance.
An ionic liquid-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction method has been successfully applied to the effective extraction of phenolic compounds from Laminaria japonica Aresch. Three kinds of 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium with different cations and anions were evaluated for extraction efficiency. The results showed that both the characteristics of anions and cations have remarkable effects on the extraction efficiency. In addition, the ionic liquid-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction procedure was also optimized on some extraction parameters, such as ultrasonic power, extraction time and solid-liquid ratio. Compared with the conventional solvent, the optimum approach gained the highest extraction efficiency within the shortest extraction time. Average recoveries of phenolic compounds were from 75.5% to 88.3% at three concentration levels.

This study investigates the anti-corrosion properties of two eco-friendly pyridinium ionic liquids; 4DMN and 4DMP, in a 3.5% NaCl solution. Utilizing weight loss tests, EIS, PDP, quantum chemical calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations, the study demonstrates concentration-dependent inhibition efficiencies of 94% and 92% for 4DMN and 4DMP, respectively. The compounds modulate both anodic and cathodic reactions without altering the corrosion mechanism. EIS data suggest that a protective layer forms, supported by FE-SEM and AFM surface analyses, which reveal improved morphology and reduced roughness. Computational validations corroborate these empirical findings, highlighting the feasibility of these ionic liquids for effective, sustainable corrosion mitigation.
