  • To fabricate a hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte composite membrane incorporated with Pt nanoparticle, the polymer electrolyte membrane made of a sulfonated-fluorinated hydrophilic-hydrophobic block copolymer (SFBC) and sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) blend in the wight ratio of 1 : 1 was synthesized, and a simple drying process was used in order to incorporate Pt nanoparticle into the SFBC/SPEEK film by reducing platinum (II) bis (acetylacetonate), Pt $(acac)_2$. The distribution of the Pt nanoparticles was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and mechanical and thermal properties were tested by universal testing machine (UTM) and thermogravimetry analyzer (TGA). Cation conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and I-V characteristics were estimated.

  • Some physico-chemical properties such as surface area, moisture content, cation exchange capacity, swelling rate, pH, viscosity and liquid limit have been determined for evaluation of Cabentonite deposit occurring in four localities; Yonil, Gampo, Haseo and Pohang, in Gyeongsang-do. Montmorillonite contents can be derived from surface area measurement. Enhancement of liquid limit values and swelling volume were observed in the samples which had higher exchangeable Na ion and finer particle-size distribution. Identical results were observed even in the Na-exchanged samples. This suggests that aggregation effects have a great influence on physico-chemical properties. Aggregation of montmorillonite were controlled not only burial depth but also composition of exchangeable cation. Consequently, sample occurred in Yonil area where has the greatest burial depth in the area show somewhat lower physico-chemical properties than those of samples occurred in the other localities. However, the basic test applied in this study provides very useful preliminary information relating to its commercial potential.

  • This study is undertaken to investigate the major factor which causes a fouling phenomenon in membrane separation system and effect of hydrophilic treatment on fouling repression of hydrophobic polymer (polysulfone, PSf). Chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) and sulfuric acid as a sulfonating agents are used to produce sulfonated PSf (SPSf). SPSf membrane is prepared under several conditions to investigate it's separation process. The extent of fouling-repression is measured by membrane filtration index (MFI) value. With increasing the ion exchange capacity (I.E.C), the flux of SPSf membrane is decreased but the rejection is increased and the flux is less reduced. According to the MFI value, the SPSf membrane has a fouling-retardant effect.

  • To isolate a calcium-binding peptide from chlorella protein hydrolysates, chlorella protein was extracted and hydrolyzed using Flavourzyme, a commercial protease. The degree of hydrolysis and calcium-binding capacity were determined using trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid and orthophenanthroline methods, respectively. The enzymatic hydrolysis of chlorella protein for 6 hr was sufficient for the preparation of chlorella protein hydrolysates. The hydrolysates of chlorella protein were then ultra-filtered under 5 kDa as molecular weight. The membrane-filtered solution was fractionated using ion exchange, reverse phase, normal phase chromatography, and fast protein liquid chromatography to identify a calcium-binding peptide. The purified calcium-binding peptide had a calcium binding activity of 0.166 mM and was determined to be 700.48 Da as molecular weight, and partially identified as a peptide containing Asn-Ser-Gly-Cys based on liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrum.

  • The removal of radioactive organic iodide generated from high temperature process in nuclear facility was generally performed by silver ion-exchanged synthetic zeolite (AgX). The purpose of this study is to obtain fundamental data for the substitution of natural zeolite(NZ) in stead of synthetic zeolite as supporter for the removal of methyl iodide in high temperature conditions. Therefore, NZ was modified with NaCl, $NaNO_3$ solution, and the analysis of the physical or surface characteristics through XRD, SEM-EDAX, and BET analysis was performed. In order to obtain the optimal surface-modification condition of NZ, adsorption capacities at $150^{\circ}C$ on surface-modified silver ion-exchanged NZ prepared with the variation of solution concentration were evaluated. The optimal condition of surface modification is that concentration of $NaNO_3$ and $AgNO_3$ are 1N and 1.2N, respectively(namely Ag-SMNZ). The adsorption isotherm of methyl iodide on Ag-SMNZ in a range of $100^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$ was obtained, which is similar to that of 13X, and the maximum adsorption amount of Ag-SMNZ reached approximately 50% that of AgX. It would be evaluated that the adsorption capacity at $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ is relatively higher than other temperature, and the chemisorption between silver and iodide is attributed to a strong binding even after desorption test.

  • Copolymerization of the 4-vinylpyridine with vinylacetate and divinylbenzene initiated by azobis-isobutyronitrile was carried out in DMF in presence $BaCl_2$ at $98^{\circ}C$. Ion exchange res in, poly 4-vinylpyridine-vinylsulfonic acid-divinylbenzene was prepared by sulfonation of 4-vinylpyridine-vinylacetatp-divinylbenzene with concentrated sulfuric acid. The compositions of each synthetic resin were identified by means of ir adsorption spectroscopy. Anion and cation capacities of 4-vinylpyridine-vinylsulfonic acid-divinylbenzene ion exchanger were 2.5meq/g and 4.8meq/g, respectively. Adsorption of Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions have showed larger quantity in alkalie media. A study also was made of the influence of alcohol on the distribution coefficient of Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions between the synthetic ion exchanger, and solution containing hydrochloric acid, various alcohols and water. The distribution coefficients of metal ions decrease generally as the number of branches of carbon in the molecule of butyl alcohol increase. (t-BuOH

  • The elution characteristics of rare earth elements in $NH^{4+}$ form cation exchange resin had been investigated. Elution were performed varing the loading amount, column diameter, column length and eluent pH. Analysing the chemical species contained in each effluent, elution mechanisms of rare earth elements and the separation of rare earth elements in monazite could be understood. The resolution values of adjacent rare earth elements were improved increasing rare earths adsorption amount wfith the same column within it's exchange capacity. With $NH^{4+}$ resin form, column length does not affect on the resolution values and retention time of rare earth elements and the rare earth-EDTA complex were not adsorbed on $NH^{4+}$ resin form. pH of eluent affected on the reactivities between rare earth elements and EDTA. Decreasing eluent pH, resolution values of adjacent rare earth elements were increased while increasing elution time.

  • In this study, the composite membranes prepared by sulfonated graphene oxide (sGO) and Nafion were developed as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The sGO/Nafion composite membranes were prepared by mixing Nafion solution with the sGO dispersed in a binary solvent system to improve dispersity of sGO. The composite membranes were investigated in terms of ionic conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC), FT-IR, TGA and SEM, etc. As a result, the binary solvent system, i.e., ortho-dichlorobenzene (ODB) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), were used to obtain high dispersion of sGO particles in Nafion solution, and the ionic conductivity of the sGO/Nafion composite membrane showed $0.06Scm^{-1}$ similar to other research results at lower water uptake, 11 wt%.

  • Adsorptive removal of tetrahydrothiophene (THT) and tert-butylmercaptan (TBM) that were widely used sulfur odorants in pipeline natural gas was studied using various ion-exchanged NaY zeolites at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. In order to improve the adsorption ability, ion exchange was performed on NaY zeolites with alkali metal cations of $Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+$ and transition metal cations of $Cu^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Ag^+$. Among the adsorbents tested, Cu-NaY and Ag-NaY showed good adsorption capacities for THT and TBM. These good behaviors of removal of sulfur compound for Cu-NaY and Ag-NaY zeolites probably was influenced by their acidity. The adsorption capacity for THT and TBM on the best adsorbent Cu-NaY-0.5, which was ion exchanged with 0.5 M copper nitrate solution, was 1.85 and 0.78 mmol-S/g at breakthrough, respectively. It was the best sulfur capacity so far in removing organic sulfur compounds from fuel gas by adsorption on zeolites. While the desorption activation energy of TBM on the Cu-NaY-0.5 was higher than NaY zeolite, the difference of THT desorption activation energy between two zeolites was comparatively small.

  • Pretreatment of egg white and ion exchange resins was attempted to separate lysozyme from egg white efficiently. Apparent viscosity of egg white could be decreased to 3cp by homogenization for 30 minutes at 2, 000rpm and ultrasonication for 45 minutes. The result of testing adsorption capacity of lysozyme was as follows; CM-Sephadex C-25 >Duolite C464>Amberlite C-50>Dowex MSC-1>Amberlite IRC-50>Amberlite IRC-84. Although CM-Sephadex C-25 showed highest adsorption capacity of lysozyme, egg white could not eluted easily. Duolite Cf64 was selected based on relatively high lysozyme adsorption and good egg white eluting property for separation of egg white lysozyme. Na$^{+}$ form of Duolite C-464 was most effective on adsorption of Iysozyme. To separate lysozyme from egg white efficiently rinse buffer and eluting solution were selected 0.1M sodium phosphate buffer at pH 6.5 and 10% ammonium sulfate respectively. After separating lysozyme from egg white, foaming power of egg white was decreased to 85.3%. Color of egg white gel was not changed while hardness of egg white gel was decreased by 30% after separating lysozyme. However, elasticity of egg white gel was increased by 13% in lysozyme-separated egg white.
