  • Electrodialysis(ED) is a reliable and effective process for the separation and concentration of ionic compounds. However, commercial uses of ED are often hindered by the cost of the stack that mainly resulted from the ion-exchange membrane cost. In order to minimize the membrane cost, it is desired to operate ED at the highest practicable current density. In an actual ED system the high current operation is limited by the concentration polarization phenomenon. This article illustrates the transport phenomena of ions through ion exchange membranes using current-voltage relations as a characterizing method. Also recent studies on electroconvection and water-spitting phenomena caused by concentration polarization were reviewed.

  • Lactobacillus brevis ATCC 14869 exhibited a carbon catabolite derepressed phenotype that has ability to consume fermentable sugars simultaneously with glucose. To evaluate this unusual phenotype under harsh conditions during fermentation, the effects of lactic acid and hydrogen ion concentrations on L. brevis ATCC 14869 were examined. Kinetic equations describing the relationship between specific cell growth rate and lactic acid or hydrogen ion concentration were deduced empirically. The change of substrate utilization and product formation according to lactic acid and hydrogen ion concentration in the media were quantitatively described. Although the simultaneous utilization has been observed regardless of hydrogen ion or lactic acid concentration, the preference of substrates and the formation of two-carbon products were changed significantly. In particular, acetic acid present in the medium as sodium acetate was consumed by L. brevis ATCC 14869 under extreme pH of both acid and alkaline conditions.

  • $Gd_{1-x}VO_4:{Eu_x}^{3+}$ phosphor powders were synthesized with changing the concentration of $Sm^{3+}$ ion by using a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structures of all the phosphors were found to be a tetragonal system, composed of (200) diffraction peak centered at $24.76^{\circ}$, and the morphology of grains approached the spherical form with homeogenous size distribution when the concentration of $Sm^{3+}$ ion was 0.05 mol. As for the photoluminescence properties, all of the phosphor powders, irrespective of $Sm^{3+}$ ion concentration, indicated the yellow, orange, and red emission peaked at 565, 603, and 645 nm respectively. As the concentration of $Sm^{3+}$ ion increases, the intensity of excitation spectrum showed a decreasing tendency on the increase of Sm3+ ion concentration. The maximum excitation and emission spectra were observed and the symmetry ratio was 1.19 at 0.05 mol of $Sm^{3+}$ ion.

  • An ion selective microelectrode (ISME) was fabricated to measure concentrations of ammonium (${NH_4}^+$-N) and nitrate (${NO_3}^-$-N) according to the depth of nitrifying biofilm. The limits of detectability and validity of results were investigated to evaluate the ISME. The electromotive force (EMF) was directly proportional to the ion concentration, and average detection limits of ${NH_4}^+$ and ${NO_3}^-$ ISME were $10^{-5.14}$ and $10^{-5.18}$ M, respectively. The concentrations of ${NH_4}^+ $-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N in various depths on the nitrifying biofilm were measured by the ISME. When a modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process was operated at an HRT of 6 h, concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N in the bulk solution and biofilm at depths of $100\;{\mu}m$ decreased by $70\;{\mu}M$, while ${NO_3}^-$-N increased by $101\;{\mu}M$ and remained constant thereafter. At an HRT of 4 h, concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N at depths of $500\;{\mu}m$ decreased by $160\;{\mu}M$ and ${NO_3}^-$-N increased by $162;{\mu}M$ and remained constant thereafter. As HRT decreased, the concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N between bulk solution and biofilm was higher due to the increase of nitrogen load. Also, the concentration gradients of the ${NH_4}^+$-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N of biofilm in the second aerobic tank were lower than those of the first aerobic tank, suggesting differences of nitrogen load and concentrations of DO between the first and second aerobic tank.

  • The electrical properties of Al/TiN/Ti contact are investigated at submicron contacts. The contact resistance and contact leakage current are dependent on metallization, surface dopant concentration, semiconductor surface treatment and contact plug ion implantation. In this paper, the contact resistance and contact leakage current are studied according to surface dopant concentration, semiconductor surface treatment and contact plug ion implantation at 0.8 micron contact. The contact resistance and contact leakage current increases with increasing substrate ion concentration. HF cleaning represents high contact resistance but low contact leakage current while CDE cleaning represents low contact resistance but high contact leakage current. Contact plug ion implantation decreases contact resistance but increases contact leakage current. Specially, RTA represents good electrical properties.

  • Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was examined as a counter-ion in the separation of aromatic sulfonic acids on alkylmodified silica (ODS) column by reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography. The capacity factor of acids was investigated and separation was attempted. The capacity factor of samples was influenced by the several factors such as a concentration of counter-ion, concentration of methanol, kinds and concentration of electrolyte in mobile phase as well as kinds and position of functional group in samples. Some mixtures of samples were able to be separated under optimum condition.

  • The effects of K$^{+}$ ion on the activity of RNA splicing of T4 phage thymidylate synthase gene have been investigated. The splicing activity was stimulated within the range of 5 to 20 mM concentration of KCI. When the concentration of KCI in the splicing reaction was brought to 100 or 200 mM a small amount of the exonl-intron product (1, 4 kb) was formed with large proportion of primary RNA transcript not undergoing splicing. This observation strongly suggests that there may exist come kinds of interferences with transesterification at the first step of splicing. Overall it can be concluded that K$^{+}$ ion exhibits very unique roles in RNA splicing of tdd gene depending on its concentration.ion.

  • The influences of $LiNO_3\;and\;AgNO_3$ on the N-C(O) rotational barrier of N,N-dimethylacetamide and N,N-dimethylpropionamide have been investigated. The rotational activation free energy $({\Delta}G^{\neq})\;for\;Li^{+}$-amide complexes is found to increase with increasing salt concentration. On the other hand, that for $Ag^+$-amide complexes increases in the presence of $Ag^+$ ion up to 0.25 M ion concentration and then decreases as the concentration of $Ag^+$ ion is further increased. Such an unusual behavior of $Ag^+$-amide complexes has been interpreted in terms of ion-pairing and diluent effect on the amides. However, $^{13}C$ nmr chemical shift data for the amides have shown that both of these ions interact primarily with the carbonyl group in amides.

  • Removal characteristics of Cu(II) ions by solid-phase extractant immobilized D2EHPA and TBP in PVC were investigated. Cu(II) ion concentrations in the solution and removal capacity of Cu(II) ion according to operation time were compared. The lower the initial concentration of Cu(II) ion in aqueous solution was, the removal capacity of Cu(II) ion by solid-phase extractant was increased relatively. The bigger the initial concentration of Cu(II) ion was, the removal capacity of Cu(II) ion was increased relatively. The pseudo-second-order kinetics according to operation time was showed more satisfying results than the pseudo-first-order kinetics for the removal velocity of Cu(II) ion. The removal capacity of Cu(II) ion was 0.025 mg/g in aqueous solution of pH 2, but the removal capacity of Cu(II) ion was increased to 0.33 mg/g mg/g in aqueous solution of pH 4 according to increasing pH.

  • A solid state ion sensor module has been developed and evaluated for hydroponic nutrients analysis. The sensor module consisted of five ion-selective electrodes (ISE) fabricated by screen-printing technology. The electrochemical responses of ion sensors for nitrate, ammonium, potassium, calcium, and pH were measured with specially designed 7-channel low voltage signal transducers. The analytical characteristics of the sensors were comparable with those of conventional ISE sensors. The solid state ion sensors exhibit linear relationships over five concentration decades. Detection limit of the sensors were $5.6{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}1.6{\times}10^{-7}M$ depends on ions. Performance test results showed that relative errors of measured ion concentrations were less than 5% for $NO_3{^-},\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+}$ ion, and pH. The concentration of $NO_3{^-},\;NH_4{^+},\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+}$, and pH ion in standard solution and nutrient solutions could be determined by direct potentiometric measurements without any conditioning before measurements.
