In this paper, ion beam technology was investigated through the published papers. Ion beam technology is mainly used by the focused ion beams. There are two different types of application methods. One method is to remove the material from the substrate, the other one is to deposit the materials on the surface of the substrate or specimen. Based on the literature review there are 1.5 times more published research papers related to the deposition than those of the removal.

The increasing demand for two-dimensional imaging analysis using optical or electronic microscopic techniques has led to an increase in the use of simple one-dimensional and two-dimensional mass spectrometry imaging. Among these imaging methods, secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has the best spatial resolution using a primary ion beam with a relatively insignificant beam diameter. Until recently, SIMS, which uses high-energy primary ion beams, has not been used to analyze molecules. However, owing to the development of cluster ion beams, it has been actively used to analyze various organic molecules from the surface. Researchers and commercial SIMS companies are developing cluster ion beams to analyze biological samples, including amino acids, peptides, and proteins. In this study, a water droplet ion beam for surface analysis was realized. Water droplets ions were generated via electrospraying in a vacuum without desolvation. The generated ions were accelerated at an energy of 10 keV and collided with the target sample, and secondary ion mass spectra were obtained for the generated ions using ToF-SIMS. Thus, the proposed water droplet ion-beam device showed potential applicability as a primary ion beam in SIMS.
This paper describes an alignment method of the ion column which is used for a focused-ion-beam machining system. The alignment parameters for mechanical and electrical components are introduced, and also sample images are used for evaluating the experiments. The experimental results show that geometrical positions of mechanical components have an influence on the quality of emitted ion beam. In addition, we can successfully align the traveling axis of ions by using mechanical and electrical methods.
We fabricated an anode-type ion beam source and studied its driving characteristics of the initial extraction of ions using two driving mechanisms: a diffusion phenomenon and a charge repulsion phenomenon. For specimen exposed to the ion beam in two methods, the surface impurity element was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Upon Ar gas injection for plasma generation the ion beam source was operated for 48 hours. We found a Fe 2p peak 5.4 at. % in the initial ions by the diffusion mechanism while no indication of Fe in the ions released in the charge repulsion mechanism. As for a long operation of 200 min, the temperature of ion beam sources was measured to increase at the rate of ${\sim}0.1^{\circ}C/min$ and kept at the initial value of $27^{\circ}C$ for driving by diffusion and charge repulsion mechanism, respectively. In this study, we confirmed that the ion beam source driven by the charge repulsion mechanism was very efficient for a long operation as proved by little electrode damage and thermal stability.

Background: Isotopes of the projectile may be produced along the beam path during the irradiation of a target by a heavy ion due to inelastic interactions with the media. This study analyzed the production cross-section of carbon (C) and Helium (He) projectile's isotopes resulting from the interactions of these beams with different materials along the beam path. Materials and Methods: In this study, we transport C and He ion beams through different materials. This transportation was made by the Monte Carlo simulation. Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) has been used for this calculation. Results and Discussion: It has been found that 10C, 11C, and 13C from the 12C ion beam and 3He from the 4He ion beam are significant projectile's isotopes that have higher flux than other isotopes of these projectiles. The 4He ion beam has a higher projectile's isotope production cross-section along the beam path, which adds more impurities to the beam than the 12C ion beam. These projectile's isotopes from both the 12C and 4He ion beams have higher production cross-sections in hydrogenous materials like water or polyethylene. Conclusion: It is important to distinguish these projectile's isotopes from the primary beam particles to obtain a precise and accurate cross-section result by minimizing the error during measurement with a nuclear track detector. This study will show the trend of the production probability of projectile's isotopes for these ion beams.
As an effective methods of plasma heating, neutral beam injection (NBI) systems based on negative hydrogen ion sources will be utilized in future magnetic-confinement nuclear fusion experiments. Because of the collisions between the fast negative ions and the neutral background gas, the positive ions are inevitable created in the acceleration region in the negative NBI system. These positive ions are accelerated back into the ion source and become high energy backstreaming ions. In order to explore the characters of backstreaming ions, the track and power deposition of backstreaming H+ beam is estimated using the experimental and simulation methods at NNBI test facility. Results show that the flux of backstreaming positive ions is 1.93 % of that of negative ion extraction from ion source, and the magnet filed in the beam source has an effect on the backstreaming positive ions propagation.
Measurement of the ion-induced secondary electron emission coefficient (${\gamma}_i$) for insulating films is hampered by an unavoidable charging problem. Here, we demonstrate that a pulsed ion beam technique is a viable solution to the problem, allowing for accurate measurement of ${\gamma}_i$ for insulating materials. To test the feasibility of the pulsed ion beam method, the secondary electron emission coefficient from n-Si(100) is measured and compared with the result from the conventional continuous beam method. It is found that the ${\gamma}_i$ from n-Si(100) by the ion pulsed beam measured to be 0.34, which is the same as that obtained by continuous ion beam. However, for the 1000 A $SiO_2$ films thermally deposited on Si substrate, the measurement of ${\gamma}_i$ could be carred out by the pulsed ion method, even though the continuous beam method faced charging problem. Thus, the pulsed ion beam is regarded to be one of the most suitable methods for measuring secondary electron coefficient for the surface of insulator materials without experiencing charging problem. In this report, the dependence of ${\gamma}_i$ on the kinetic energy of $He^+$ is presented for 1000 ${\AA}$$SiO_2$ films. And the secondary electron emission coefficient of 1000 ${\AA}$ MgO e-beam-evaporated on $SiO_2/Si$ is obtained using the pulsing method for $He^+$ and $Ar^+$ with energy ranging from 50 to 200 eV, and then compared with those from the conventional continuous method.
We have studied diffusion behavior of NiFe/Ag bilayer deposited by on silicon Ion Beam Sputtering methods. The diffusion behavior of NiFe and Ag in NiFe/Ag thin film is analyzed by Medium Energy Ion Scattering Spectroscopy. For samples without Ta underlayer, silicides such as Ni-Si or Fe-Si were formed at Si substrate and NiFe interface. In contrast, Ag predominantly diffused into the NiFe layer probably through their grain boundaries for Ta underlayered samples.
It is widely investigated to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using non-contact alignment method such as ion-beam (IB) irradiation, UV alignment, and oblique deposition. Because conventional rubbing method has some drawbacks. These include defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. In addition, rubbing method needs additional process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free methods like ion-beam irradiation are strongly required. We studied LC alignment effect on poly imide surface by IB irradiation and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD). In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) (SE-150 from Nissan Chemical) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as a function of ion-beam irradiation intensity. In addition, it can be obtained the good EO properties of the IB-aligned TN-LCD on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the poster.
