A New Measurement and Its Determinants for Corporate Environmental Management: An Empirical Study in Vietnam

  • This study examines the environmental performance of firms in Vietnam and its determinants. The contribution of the paper is on both theoretical and empirical aspects. On the theoretical matter, the research proposes a new index measuring environmental management at the firm level, namely the Environmental Management Index with a clear illustration for the case of Vietnam. On the empirical matter, the study points out and estimates determinants of the corporate environmental performance of Vietnamese firms measured by the newly proposed index. Due to data availability and the impossibility of getting more updated data, the empirical analysis covers only the period from 2004-2009. However, findings are still meaningful because, on the one hand, it provides some evidence for Vietnamese policymakers; on the other hand, with the robust methodology proposed, when more recent data are available, researchers can easily replicate the estimation for more insights. Empirical results show that factors having positive impacts on the environmental performance of Vietnamese firms are profit, capital stock, and interestingly public pressure proxied by the population of the province where the firm is located. Firm ownership does also matter in explaining the corporate environmental performance of Vietnam.

Preference for Green Packaging in Consumer Product Choices: Empirical Evidence from Gen Z Consumers in Vietnam

  • Recently, the call for better accountability and social responsibility from corporations has been regularly voiced, both in the academic literature and in public discussions. This poses a challenge to the existing literature in understanding consumption behaviors to direct them toward sustainable development. This study investigates the purchase intention of Gen Z consumers in Vietnam with green packaging products. Data were collected from 914 respondents by online questionnaire and then analyzed using OLS. The results suggest the significant influence of customers' income and packaging in driving customers' intention to use environmentally-friendly products. Specifically, consumers in a higher income class participate more actively in green purchases. However, problems associated with inadequate packaging are also illustrated, resulting in the poor perception of green messages and poor practice of ecological actions. Besides, subjective norms and green trust are found to be adversely related to green consumer intention. In addition, gender disparity in green behavior is reported, where female consumers show a higher tendency to ecological consumption than their male counterparts. Other demographic factors are also included in the model as control variables, which are age, education, price, environmental literacy, environmental concern, and psychological awareness, but they do not have a significant impact on green purchase intention.

Analysis of International Competitiveness of Chinese ginseng in Comparison with Korean ginseng (중국 인삼 산업의 국제 경쟁력 분석)

  • In this thesis we aim at analyzing international competitive power of Chinese ginseng in comparison with Korean ginseng and searching policy direction for Korea to compete Chinese ginseng industry. We summarized the research results as follows; First, we examine the structural change of ginseng industry of China. Second, we review the theories for international competitiveness and apply the method of analyzing competitiveness to ginseng industry. Third, we compared the international competitive power of the ginseng industry between China and Korea and found that Chinese ginseng, estimated by Revealed Comparative Advantage(RCA) at about 15, still remains high competitiveness in terms of cost and price but lowering price competitiveness recently. Based on the research results, we suggest export promotion strategies of the Korean ginseng as follows; 1) Korean government should enforce trade cooperation with China so as to register Korean root ginseng an importable medicine. 2) Korean ginseng producer should develop various products such as capsules, powders and etc. according to China's consumer purchasing power and taste. 3) Korean ginseng should be sold as an differentiated commodity so that it will contribute to building consumer loyalty to Korean ginseng, makes market share superior to other cheaper ginseng products in China. 4) In order to be effective brand marketing and product advertisement, there should be established reliable networks to process and distribute Korean ginseng products exclusively.

  • This paper is intended to analyze the toxic substances transmission between South Korea and U.S. through international trade, based on 2000 international input-output data and both country's toxic substances. According to result, The high TEI sectors are metal, chemical and general machinery in Korea, and the high TEI sectors of America are electric & electronics, Chemicals, Rubber and Plastics. Korea's export structure to America is more pollutant than America's export structure to Korea.

Economic Popularism and Globalization

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the recent resurgence of popularism and the possible impacts it may have on contemporary business and economics. Research design, data and methodology: This is an exploratory case study that examines the rise of popularism and identifies and analyzes the likely implications for contemporary business and economics. Results: Although populists tend to reject elitism, capitalism, economic globalization, and political establishment, their ethnocentric behavior is no different from those of the corrupt political and economic elites. Popularism does enable nationalism and protectionism and negatively impacts business and economic growth. Conclusions: Popularism existed for a long time, and this phenomenon will continue to exist as long as a triggered mechanism exist, e.g., income inequality, resurgence of immigration, recession, insufficient factors of resources and social welfare. The recent rise of popularism is not a fad or a short-lived anti-establishment and anti-elitism movements but, rather, a force to be reckoned with in the near future. The rise of economic nationalism limits international trade, integration, and cooperation. As a result, international capital, service, and product flows will decline, and countries and multinational corporations have to develop and restructure their international supply and value chain to cope with this phenomenon.

Foreign Income Growth and Analyst Forecast Optimism

  • Purpose - The international market provides a growth momentum for firms by allowing them to tap into a new market. Given information asymmetry between firms and financial analysts, firms' international growth can be perceived as a higher business prospect by analysts. This paper explores the possibility of analysts' over-emphasis on foreign income growth in predicting earnings. Research design, data, and methodology - We utilize a sample of U.S. firms to test the relationship between foreign income growth and analysts' forecast optimism. Our sample of publicly listed and traded U.S. firms between 1976 and 2016 consists of 6,120 firm-year observations. Results - Empirical analyses show that firms that show higher international growth in earnings are likely to face forecast inaccuracy by financial analysts. From the perspective of firms, their earnings are less than what analysts forecasted. Contrary to our prediction on the moderating effect of innovative capabilities, optimistic bias is not intensified - rather, it is reduced - when firms have higher innovative capabilities. Conclusions - Our results imply that while analysts favor firms with higher international growth, innovative capability on the international market places additional risks to firms' operation.

The Management of International Distribution Channels : Focusing on the Perspective Korean Exporting Companies

  • Purpose - The objective of this research is to investigate how selected Korean General Trading Companies, (KGTCs), manage their international distribution channels to sustain the growth of the international marketplace. Specifically, the following questions were answered: What is the profile of the respondents in the position from the company, the experience in channel of distribution operations, the number of distribution channels existing in the international marketplace. Research design, data, methodology -The thirty-nine respondents representing 55 percent have less than 10 years of experience in channel of distribution operations while 34 respondents, equivalent to 45 percent have 10 or more years of experience. All of the respondent KGTCs are using the channel of distribution in their export operations in Asia. Respondent KGTCs' 2015 export sales in Asia were between US$ 100 to 200 million. Results - There are no significant differences in the perceptions of the two groups of respondents with regard to the perceived practices of KGTC in the management of international distribution channels. Exporting companies use common sense when managing conflicts and emphasize the importance of a clear contract which states what obligations and requirements there are of each party in order to prevent conflict. Conclusions - The higher level of details in the contract, the lesser would conflicts arise. The more intense communication, the higher level of information exchange.   • Purpose - An empirical analysis of various opinions of experts to build Busan's global city image. Based on this, we provide strategy establishment metrics using opportunities, strengths, and threats to build Busan's global city image. Research design, data and methodology - SWOT-AHP analysis are used in terms of methodology, and this study is based on experts' reviews and answers. In addition, AHP analysis is performed based on SWOT analysis to derive the result values for important priority factors. Result - As a result of the prioritization of SWOT-AHP results, a matrix of strategic development directions for Busan city brand building can be presented. As a result of the composite weighting, the factors related to opportunity were ranked as important. In addition, matrices on SO strategy, ST strategy, WO strategy, and WT strategy were derived. Conclusion - This study is an interdisciplinary study from the economic aspect, international management and international marketing aspect, administrative aspect, and architectural engineering aspect. Through this, the image of a global city of Busan that can overcome COVID-19 and cope with the 4th industry in the future will be built, and Busan will be able to build a global international city image by commercially attracting the 2030 World Expo.

  • This study was motivated by the fact that the educational curriculum needs revising as the contemporary society undergoes dramatic changes; this change demonstrates that Korea society now turns into a multicultural community. In this vein, this study aims to examine how the national Home economics curriculum (revised in 2007) incorporated the essence of multicultural education program and that of international understanding program into the coursebook, and to suggest which part of the coursebook needs revising to enhance its validity. To attain this goal, this research was conducted to analyze how two programs are implemented in secondary school, and to propose how those programs should be developed to address the immediate needs of the current society. To illustrate, this study examines a variety of theories and methodology on how multicultural education program should be implemented along with the current situation of Korea society. In addition, quantitative research was conducted to acquire empirical data from 6 coursebooks the frequencies of statements and visual aids that are considered to be directly reflect the essence of two programs. The results demonstrate that two programs are relegated into a lesser position compared to other programs; furthermore, they lack materials to deepen students' understanding about multicultural society and international relations. Therefore, the considerable revision needs to be conducted to embrace the essence of multicultural society and international understanding programs, and sensitize students to the immediate needs of the current society.

A Study on the Unification of International Regulations in Contracts for International Sale of Goods (국제물품매매계약에 있어서 국제규범들의 통일화에 관한 연구)

  • At present, there are various standards used as the governing law of contracts for establishing, implementing, and resolving disputes between the parties to international sales contracts, called "Forum Shopping." Uncertainty and increased transaction costs, which may arise from these various norms, may hinder the activation of international commerce. This study examines the process of enacting and examining various international unification norms that have emerged through international organizations to eliminate trade barriers caused by choice of governing law concerning parties involved in the international sale of goods. Issues regarding the positive and negative perspectives are discussed to identify obstacles to international unification norms. In particular, by comparing and analyzing the differences between the regulations of the CISG and PICC, the representative international unification norms on international sales contracts, the possibility of unification of the norms on international sales contracts are reviewed. Direction for the establishment of a single international regulation is presented for reducing the transaction costs and uncertainties in the international sale of goods.
