  • The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effect of Korean medicine on a patient who experienced headaches and nausea after post-concussion syndrome. The patient was treated with herbal medicine (Oryung-san, Hwangryunhaedok-tang-tablet) and acupuncture for four weeks. As a result, the pain degree compared to the day of hospitalization of headache and nausea and pain rating score of headache decreased after treatment. Therefore, this case is useful for describing Korean medicine treatment for headache and nausea after post-concussion syndrome, and further case reports and studies will be needed in the future.

  • Objectives This study reports three cases of pressure ulcer treated with Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopuncture. Methods Three patients with pressure ulcers were treated by Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopuncture and Jaungo at the Oriental Medicine Hospital of Daejeon University. Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopuncture and Jaungo was administrated once a day with simple dressing. Thereafter, we observed the pressure ulcers macroscopically. Results and Conclusions After 3 weeks, wound sizes were reduced and tissue regeneration was accelerated. In conclusion, Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopuncture and Jaungo are effective to treat pressure ulcers, but more studies will be required to validate its use in pressure ulcers.

  • Hiccups, also known as singultus, are spasmodic involuntary contractions of respiratory muscles that shorten respiration. The characteristic sound is caused by rapid closure of the glottis. In oriental medicine, the mechanism of hiccups is "reversed flow of Ki". Hiccups have been associated with neoplasm, infections, seizures, diabetes. renal failure, alcohol ingestion, various drugs, and ischemic events of the myocardium or central nervous system. We present a case of chronic hiccups after cerebral infarction that was successfully treated using moxibustion therapy.

Results : There was no difference of symptoms by age, but the symptoms were different by seasons. In spring and autumn, there was a large amount of Hwa. In summer, there was a large amount of Kihuh, and in winter, there was a large amount of Hwa and Dahm. Conclusions : We have concluded that these differences should be considered in the management and the prevention of stroke.

  • Pregnancy related stroke is significant because it has dire impact on both mother and the fetus. Pregnant or puerperal women are reported to have about 13-fold more risk of stroke compared to non-pregnant women. Pregnancy-related stroke must be differentiated from stroke in elderly patients, because it is different in pathophysiological etiologies and recurrence rates and also diagnostic and therapeutic methods may affect the fetal health status. Because the VI cranial nerve manages lateral rectus muscles, it' s palsy causes sudden onset of double vision. The eyes turn medially. In this article, one case of paralytic strabismus resulting from pontine hematoma during puerperium is reported. It was treated with herb medicine and acupuncture. Symptoms improved. This case is submitted with a brief overview of related lit.

Methods: The patient was treated from July 9th, 2014 to August 7th, 2014. He was taking Saenggangeonbi-tang (生肝建脾湯) during the treatment period. He also undertook regular exercise and regulated his diet to reduce body weight. Results: The patient’s AST, ALT, and GGT levels were significantly decreased. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL levels were also decreased, and HDL level was increased. His body weight and body mass index (BMI) were decreased. Conclusions: The results suggest that Saenggangeonbi-tang with exercise and regulated diet could be an effective treatment for adolescent NAFLD with obesity in clinics.

  • Aim: To examine the efficacy of Hominis Placenta Hydrate (HPH) on the hemopoiesis in a myelosuppression model system. Methods: Mice were injected with 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) intraperitoneally and were administered with 200 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg of HPH. Peripheral blood was analyzed at 5, 9, and 13 days. Histopathologic examination of bone marrow was performed at 5 days after 5-FU injection. The expression of cytokine involved in hemopoiesis was examined by using ELISA kit. Results: The hematology data demonstrated that the treatment of all the agents augmented monocytes and leucocytes counts in the peripheral blood WBC and platelet in HPH treated group were significant increased compared with control group. Also, cell numbers of RBC and Hb were restored. In HPH treated group, expression of IL-3, GM-CSF was significant increased But not TPO. Conclusions: Based on the above results, it is suggested that Hominis Placenta Hydrate is an effective remedy for the bone marrow failure and myelosuppression occurring during chemotherapy.

  • Objectives : This study was to investigated using National Institutes of Health Strokes Scale score in 36 patients with middle cerebral artery infarction and to enaluate prognosis. Method : The subjects oh this study were 36 patients who were admitted to the Wonkwang oriental medicine. Improving rate were measured by using the National Institutes of Health Strokes Scale score. Each patient was diagnosed with Brain Computerized Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and clinical observation. Results : There were significant results statistically between National Institutes of Health Strokes Scale score and middle cerebral artery territories. While sex, age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and heart disease were not siginificant meaning statistically. Conclusions: Sex, age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and heart disease were relevant factors in predicting the functional outcome in the patients with middle cerebral artery infarction. In this study, middle cerebral artery territory affects the functional outcome.
