  • Two-month old male Shih Tzu weighing 2.1 kg was presented with alopecia in black-haired areas of the skin. The hair loss had been present since five weeks of age. There was no history of pruritus on any part of the body. No other symptoms had been recognized. Physical examination found no abnormalities other than hair loss. Skin examination showed marked alopecia of black-haired area of the body. The white areas appeared to have hair growth of normal density and texture. Affected pigmented areas showed no evidence of skin lesions. Skin scraping and fungal culture were negative. Microscopic examination of plucked black hairs showed marked pigment clumping in the remnants of the follicles and were mainly in telogen phase. But white hairs were normal in various stages of hair growth. The diagnosis of black hair follicular dysplasia was made based on the history, alopecia of the pigmented areas, the confinement of abnormalities to dark areas, and the normal unpigmented areas.

  • Considerable advance has been made on research on effect of steel pipe Umbrella Arch Method (UAM) and mechanical reinforcement mechanism through numerical analyses and experiments. Due to long analysis time of three-dimensional analysis and its complexity, un-quantitative two-dimensional analysis is dominantly used in the design and application, where equivalent material properties of UAM reinforced area and ground are used, For this reason, development of reasonable, theoretical, quantitative and easy to use design and analysis method is required. In this study, both field UAM tests and laboratory tests were performed in the residual soil to highly weathered rock; field tests to observe the range of reinforcement, and laboratory tests to investigate the change of material properties between prior to and after UAM reinforcement. It has been observed that the increase in material property of neighboring ground is negligible, and that only stiffness of steel pipe and cement column formed inside the steel pipe and the gap between steel pipe and borehole contributes to ground reinforcement. Based on these results and concept of Convergence Confinement Method (CCM), two dimensional axisymmetric analyses have been performed to obtain the longitudinal displacement profile (LDP) corresponding to arching effect of tunnel face, UAM effect and effect of supports. In addition, modified load distribution method in two dimensional plane-strain analysis has been suggested, in which effect of UAM is transformed to internal pressure and modified load distribution ratios are suggested. Comparison between the modified method and conventional method shows that larger displacement occur in the conventional method than that in the modified method although it may be different depending on ground condition, depth and size of tunnel, types of steel pipe and initial stress state. Consequently, it can be concluded that the effect of UAM as a beam in a longitudinal direction is not considered properly in the conventional method.

  • When reinforced concrete structures are subjected to strong seismic forces, their beam-column connections are very susceptible to be damaged during the earthquake event. Consequently, structural designers try to fit an important quantity of steel reinforcement inside the connection, complicating its construction without a clear justification for this. The aim of this work is to evaluate -and demonstrate- numerically how the quantity and the array of the internal steel reinforcement influences on the nonlinear response of the RC beam-column connection. For this, two specimens (extracted from an experimental test of 12 RC beam-column connections reported in literature) were modeled in the Finite Element code FEAP considering different stirrup's arrays. The nonlinear response of the RC beam-column connection is evaluated taking into account the nonlinear thermodynamic behavior of each component: a damage model is used for concrete; a classical plasticity model is adopted for steel reinforcement; the steel-concrete bonding is considered perfect without degradation. At the end, the experimental responses obtained in the tests are compared to the numerical results, as well as the distribution of shear stresses and damage inside the concrete core of the beam-column connection, which are analyzed for a low and high state of confinement.

  • This paper presents a combined experimental, numerical, and analytical study on elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular (E-CFT) and rebar-stiffened elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular (RE-CFT) subjected to axial loading. ABAQUS was used to establish 3D finite element (FE) models for the composite columns and the FE results agreed well with the experimental results. It was found that the ultimate load-bearing capacity of RE-CFT stub columns was 20% higher than that of the E-CFT stub columns. Such improvement was attributed to the reinforcement effects from the internal rebar-stiffeners, which effectively enhanced the confinement effect on the core concrete, thereby significantly improved both the ultimate bearing capacity and the ductility of the E-CFT columns. Based on the results, equations were also established in this paper to predict the bearing capacities of E-CFT and RE-CFT stub columns under axial loading. The predicted results agreed well with both experimental and numerical results, and had much higher accuracy than other available methods.

  • So far, square concrete filled tubular(CFT) columns have been used in a limited width thickness ratio. The reason is that local buckling occurs in steel tube easily. Once the local buckling occurs, the confinement effect of steel tube on concrete disappears. In this study, we developed welded built-up square steel tube with reinforcement which are placed at the center of the tube width acts as an anchor. 3 specimens of slender welded built-up square CFT columns and 3 specimens of slender welded built-up square steel tube columns were manufactured with parameters of width(B) of steel tube, width thickness ratio(B/t). we conducted a experimental test on the 6 specimens under eccentric load, and evaluated the structural resistance and behavior of 6 specimens.

  • Stone column installation is a convenient method for improvement of soft ground. In very soft clays, in order to increase the lateral confinement of the stone columns, encasing the columns with high stiffness and creep resistant geosynthetics has proved to be a successful solution. This paper presents the results of three dimensional finite element analyses for evaluating improvement in behaviour of ordinary stone columns (OSCs) installed in soft clay by geotextile encasement under monotonic and cyclic loading by a comprehensive parametric study. The parameters include length and stiffness of encasement, types of stone columns (floating and end bearing), frictional angle and elastic modulus of stone column's material and diameter of stone columns. The results indicate that increasing the stiffness of encasement clearly enhances cyclic behaviour of geotextile encased stone columns (GESCs) in terms of reduction in residual settlement. Performance of GESCs is less sensitive to internal friction angle and elasticity modulus of column's materials in comparison with OSCs. Also, encasing at the top portion of stone column up to triple the diameter of column is found to be adequate in improving its residual settlement and at all loading cycles, end bearing columns provide much higher resistance than floating columns.

  • A finite element analysis (FEA) model is established to investigate the concrete-encased concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column to reinforced concrete (RC) beam joints under cyclic loading. The feasibility of the FEA model is verified by a set of test results, consisting of the failure modes, the exposed view of connections, the crack distributions and development, and the hysteretic relationships. The full-range analysis is conducted to investigate the stress and strain development process in the composite joint by using this FEA model. The internal force distributions of different components, as well as the deformation distributions, are analyzed under different failure modes. The proposed connections are investigated under dimensional and material parameters, and the proper constructional details of the connections are recommended. Parameters of the beam-column joints, including material strength, confinement factor, reinforcement ratio, diameter of steel tube to sectional width ratio, beam to column linear bending stiffness ratio and beam shear span ratio are evaluated. Furthermore, the key parameters affecting the failure modes and the corresponding parameters ranges are proposed in this paper.

  • Column tests were performed for a new type of column, the internally confined hollow concrete filled tube column (ICH CFT column), to evaluate its seismic performance. The seismic performances for two types of ICH CFT columns and a general solid RC column were evaluated and compared by quasi-static tests. The displacements and the lateral loads of column specimens were measured during tests. Ductilities, absorbed energy, equivalent damping ratios, damage indices were calculated from recorded data. From the test results, the ICH CFT column shows superior seismic performances with double moment capacity and larger energy absorbing capacity over that of a solid RC column.

  • The hollow RC(Reinforced concrete) column has the effect of reducing weight and materials compared to solid RC column. However, the hollow RC column shows a low ductile behavior due to brittle failure of inside concrete. To overcome this problem, the internally confined hollow reinforced concrete column has been developed. In this study, the behavior of internally confined hollow RC columns were evaluated with safety ratio, ductility, total material cost, the total weight of the pier, etc. The hollow ratio is varied from 0.50 to 0.85.

  • This paper is to investigate the shrinkage properties of high performance concrete (HPC) with mixture adjustment by using mock-up specimens. HPC with mixture adjustment needed a higher dosage of SP agent due to fluidity reduction and a larger dosage of AE agent due to the reduction of air content. Setting time of HPC with mixture adjustment exhibited earlier than that of control HPC by as much as 6 hours. HPC with mixture adjustment gained more than 70MPa of compressive strength. Autogenous shrinkage of Control HPC was found to be $-340\times40^{-6}$ at 49days when the expansion value by thermal effect was excluded and HPC with mixture adjustment $-175\times10^{-6}$, which was the half of the value of control HPC. Drying shrinkage of center section of HPC with mixture adjustment showed similar tendency with autogenous shrinkage because of no internal moisture movement, while surface section had larger drying shrinkage. The specimen embedded with reinforcing bar had smaller deformation caused by confinement of reinforcing bar.
