This paper is aimed to understand the effect of different galvannealing temperatures on the frictional properties and Fe-Zn intermetallic phases of the galvannealed (GA) coatings on steel sheets. Their galvannealing treatments were conducted at 465, 505, 515 and $540^{\circ}C$ for about 10s in the additional heating furnace of an industrial continuous hot-dip galvanizing line. The mechanical and the frictional properties of the coatings were estimated using nanoindentation, nanoscratch, micro vickers hardness tests and flat friction tests, which were performed at contact pressures of 4, 20 and 80MPa. Also, the correlation between the microstructure and the frictional properties of the GA coatings were investigated by SEM observation for the cross-section of the GA coating after and before flat friction tests. The results showed that the mechanical and the frictional properties of the coatings are strongly dependent on their phase distributions and microstructure. Especially, in low contact pressure of 4MPa the frictional properties of the coatings were dependent on the surface phases and morphology, while in high contact pressure of 80MPa it was influenced by their mechanical properties based on the dominant phase distributions.
Ball milling of elemental powders in advance and using an induction heating system for intermetallic coatings are known to enhance the reactivity of combustion synthesis. In this work, the effects of simultaneously applying these two incentive methods on the properties of intermetallic coatings are studied. Ni-Al powder compacts ball-milled with three different ball-to-powder weight ratio mixtures are synthesized and coated on mild steel by combustion synthesis in an induction heating system. Consequently, similar to an electrical heating system, the positive effects of ball milling on the combustion synthesis are confirmed in the induction heating system. The enhancement in synthetic reactivity achieved by applying the two incentive methods at the same time is greater than that by applying each incentive method separately. In particular, the enhancement is remarkable at low reaction temperature. However, there are limitations to improving the reactivity by simultaneously applying the two incentive methods to the combustion synthesis, unlike the reaction temperature. The microstructure and hardness of the coating layer are both influenced by the ball-charging ratio employed in the ball-milling process.
The objective of the present study is to investigate the increase in the functional characteristics of a substrate by the formation of a thin coating layer. Thin coating layers of $Ti_5Si_3$ have high potential because $Ti_5Si_3$ exhibits high hardness. Shock induced reaction synthesis is an attractive fabrication technique to synthesize uniform coating layer by controlling the shock wave. Ti and Si powders to form $Ti_5Si_3$ using shock induced reaction synthesis, were mixed using high-energy ball mill into small scale. The positive effect of this technique is highly functional coating layer on the substrate due to ultra fine substructure, which improves the bonding strength. These materials are in great demand as heat resisting, structural and corrosion resistant materials. Thin $Ti_5Si_3$ coating layer was successfully recovered and showed high Vickers' hardness (Hv=1183). Characterization studies on microstructure revealed a fairly uniform distribution of powders with good interfacial integrity between the powders and the substrate.

Laser welding has the advantage of high welding speed and Provides low heat distortion Thus laser welding is a very attractive process for joining thin steel sheet and surface treated steel sheet. And the major item in market for surface treated steel sheet is zinc coated steel. However. the laser welding of zinc coated steel is very difficult because of its low boiling point. Compared with zinc, on the other hand, aluminum has a high boiling point. Thus, laser weldability of aluminized steel is better than that of zinc coated steel. Moreover aluminized steel sheet is a material with excellent heat resistance, thermal reflection and corrosion resistance. The results of laser weldability of the aluminized steel for the full penetration welding will be described in this paper We focused on the investigation of the phenomenons caused by coating condition and behavior of aluminum in weld.
The aluminized steel sheet exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, and can substitute for stainless steel or heat-resisting steel in some situations. Furthermore it has wide applications, owing to its low cost and excellent performance, in the petrochemical industry, electric power, other energy conversion system, etc. and has attracted the attention of many investigators. Laser welding is a remarkably advantageous method for welding of thin sheets and surface-treated steel sheets since the method requires less heat input, and it is suitable for high-speed welding. In this study, thus, the laser weldability of aluminized steel sheet was investigated. As the result from the study, there is an Al-rich zone in a welded part which has decreased the welding strength due to the intermetallic compounds in the Al-rich zone.
Steel crucible used for molten Al has a problem of very limited lifetime because of the interaction between Fe and molten Al. This study was performed to improve the lifetime of steel crucible for molten Al by coating metallic Al and by further anodizing treatment to form thick and uniform anodic oxide films. The lifetime of the steel crucible was improved slightly by Al coating from 30 to 40 hours by metallic Al coating and largely to 120 hours by coating the surface with anodic oxide film. The improved lifetime was attributed to blocking of the reaction between Fe and molten Al with the help of anodic oxide layer with more than 20 um thickness on the crucible surface. The failure of the steel crucible arises from the formation of intermetallic compounds and pores at the steel/Al interface.
In this study, fundamental experiment was conducted with various strength of UHSS (Ultra High Strength Steel) by $CO_2$ laser. And then, butt and lap joint laser welding with boron alloyed steel and Al-Si coated boron alloy steel have been done by changing laser beam feature, existence of gap and existence of coating layer to know welding characteristics of those materials. As a result, in case of fundamental experiment with various strength steel, hardening was found in the weld metal of all tested materials and softening was found at the heat affected zone of SGAFC 1180. In case of laser butt welding of UHSS, mechanical properties was improved by using small laser beam diameter and Al-Si coating layer caused fracture of weld metal. In case of laser lap welding of UHSS, Al-Si coating layer resulted in formation of intermetallic compound at the fusion boundary where fracture occurred. Al-Si coating layer caused lowering mechanical properties of weld metal.
This article reports a experimental study of the method to achieve a bond joint at lower temperature in a short time. DC magnetron sputtering of Sn, Sn/Pb, Sn/In and Sn/Cu on copper substrate was provided as an interlayer for Cu to Cu bonding under the air environment. Various examination was conducted and investigated on the effect of experimental parameters such as coating materials, coating time(or coating thickness), bonding temperature and bonding time etc. Bonding was performed at the temperature of $210^\circC-320^\circC$ for 0sec and interfacial reaction between the coated layer and copper substrate was examined using optical, scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffractometer. From the obtained results, it was found that intermetallic compounds layer consisted of $\eta-phase(Cu_6Sn_5)$ and $\beta-phase(Cu_3Sn)$ was formed at the joint interface for almost all coating materials. But the dominant phase formed in the preetched Cu substrate coated with Sn was $\beta-phase$. A characteristic morphology looks like a reaction ring, which was believed as the strong interconnecting regions between two substrates, was found to be formed on the reaction surface of copper substrates. The morphologies and compositions of the intermetallics, which depends on the regions of the reaction surface, was appeared as greatly different. Based on above results, the new bonding process to make the joint at lower temperature for short time can be admitted as a feasible process.
Al-Mg films were prepared onto steel sheet according to deposition condition by eco-friendly electron beam vacuum evaporation method. The influence of Al-Mg films on corrosion resistance was evaluated by salt spray test and electrochemical method etc.. From the experimented results, it was found that the Al-Mg films which showed good corrosion resistance tend to have fine structure with homogenious composition distribution. In addition, it was shown that the property of coating films can be improve by controlling thickness ratio and uniform distribution of intermetallic compounds in Al-Mg films.

The research involves the development of a powder metallurgical route for producing good quality TiAl targets for making physical vapour deposition (PVD) coatings. Mixtures of elemental titanium and aluminium powders were mechanically milled using a novel discus milling technique under various conditions. Hot isotropic pressing (HIP) was then employed for consolidation of the mechanically alloyed powders. A cathodic arc vapour deposition process was applied to produce a TiAlN coating. Microstructural examination was conducted on the target material and PVD coatings, using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It has been found that combining mechanical alloying and HIP enable us to produce fairly good quality of TiAl based target. The PVD coatings obtained from the TiAl target showed very high microhardness values.
