  • Long-term experiments have been conducted on two important safety issues: long-term durability of a concrete barrier with the steel reinforcements and gas generation from low-and intermediate-level wastes in an underground research tunnel of a radioactive waste disposal facility. The gas generation and microbial communities were monitored from waste packages (200 L and 320 L) containing simulated dry active wastes. In the concrete experiment, corrosion sensors were installed on the steel reinforcements which were embedded 10 cm below the surface of concrete in a concrete mock-up, and groundwater was fed into the mock-up at a pressure of 2.1 bars to accelerate groundwater infiltration. No clear evidence was observed with respect to corrosion initiation of the steel reinforcement for 4 years of operation. This is attributed to the high integrity and low hydraulic conductivity of the concrete. In the gas generation experiment, significant levels of gas generation were not measured for 4 years. These experiments are expected to be conducted for a period of more than 10 years.

  • In Korea-LTPP(Long Tenn Pavement Performance) project, the full depth asphalt pavement test sections are constructed on the national highway to evaluate the structural capacity of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber. Truck loading test and FWD test were performed to measure the structural capacity of test sections. Test results showed that the reinforcement of glass fiber installed at between surface and intermediate asphalt layer decreased the strain at the bottom of surface layer and moved up the stress neutral axis in asphalt layer. As a result, the tensile stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of reinforced asphalt pavement, while the compressive stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of unreinforced asphalt pavement. On the other hand, the tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt base layer didn't show a difference between glass fiber reinforced and unreinforced pavements. From the FWD test, it was shown that the surface deflection of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber decreased 24 percents comparing to that of unreinforced asphalt pavement. This shows that the reinforcement with glass fiber appears to improve the rutting resistance of asphalt pavement.

  • With the increasing tendency to construct high rise reinforced concrete building~i, it is required to use high strength materIals, smaller member sections, and larger reinforcing bars, I t is generally recognized that under severe seismic loads beam column jomts may become more critical structural components than other structural elements. In a ductile momentresistmg reinforced concrete frame, the connection of bearncolumn must be capable of resistll1g the large lateral forces caused by seismic actions, The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate and ll1vestigate the earthquake resistant perform ance of beam-colurrm subassemblies constructed with high-strength concrete cast by the concrete of com¬pressive strength of 700kg / cm2 subjected to reversed cyclic loadings. New approaches for moving the plastic hinging zone away from the column face and preventing the di¬agonal crack in the joint region are adopted to advance the earthquake-resistant performance of beam-column subassemblies using high-strengh concrete under severe earthquake-type loading. Exper¬imental results indicate that the modified new details which are introduced by intermediate reinforcement in the beam over a specific beam length adjacent to the joint are able to attain the stable hysteretic behavior and the enhancement of earthquake-resistant performance. Keywords: high strength concrete: beam-column Joints; seirnic loads(reversed cyclic loading) : earth¬quake-resistant performance; plastic hinge zone: diagonal crack: intermediate reinforce¬ment ; closed strirrup: hysteretic behavior: enhancement .

  • As the common cast-in-place construction works fails to meet the enormous construction demand under rapid economic growth, the development of prefabricated structure instead becomes increasingly promising in China. For the prefabricated structure, its load carrying connection joint play a key role in maintaining the structural integrity. Therefore, a novel end plate bolt connecting joint between fully prefabricated pre-stressed concrete beam and high-strength reinforcement-confined concrete column was proposed. Under action of low cycle repeated horizontal loadings, comparative tests are conducted on 6 prefabricated pre-stressed intermediate joint specimens and 1 cast-in-place joint specimen to obtain the specimen failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, ductility factor, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity and other seismic indicators, and the seismic characteristics of the new-type prefabricated beam-column connecting joint are determined. The test results show that all the specimens for end plate bolt connecting joint between fully prefabricated pre-stressed concrete beam and high-strength reinforcement-confined concrete column have realized the design objectives of strong column weak beam. The hysteretic curves for specimens are good, indicating desirable ductility and energy dissipation capacity and seismic performances, and the research results provide theoretical basis and technical support for the promotion and application of prefabricated assembly frames in the earthquake zone.

  • EPS(Electric Power Steering) system, which has replaced the hydraulic steering system(HPS or HPAS) in many passenger cars recently, have many merits such as low energy consumption, easy mounting, light weight and improvement of environmental pollution. However, EPS system has the problem of motor noise when motor is rotated, which can make a driver feel uncomfortable. There are many techniques to solve those problems, but they are not clear. It is necessary to evaluate the mechanical noise in steering systems, because an EPS has vibration sources such as at the motor gear reducer, manual gears and intermediate joints. In this paper, reduction technique of EPS motor noise is introduced.

  • Study on flexural retrofitting of RC beams using external bars with additional intermediate anchorages at soffit is reported in this paper. Effects of varying number of anchorages in the external bars at soffit were studied by finite element analysis using ANSYS 12.0 software. The results were also compared with available experimental results for beam with only two end anchorages. Two sets of reference and retrofitted beam specimens with two, three, four and five anchorages were analysed and the results are reported. FE modeling and non-linear analysis was carried out by discrete reinforcement modeling using Solid65, Solid45 and Link8 elements. Combin39 spring elements were used for modeling the frictional contact between the soffit and the external bars. The beam specimens were subjected to four-point bending and incremental loading was applied till failure. The entire process of modeling, application of incremental loading and generation of output in text and graphical format were carried out using ANSYS Parametric Design Language.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) beam column joints (BCJ) have mostly exhibited poor seismic performance during several past earthquakes, typically due to the poor-quality concrete or lack of reinforcement detailing typical of pre-code design practice. The present study is motivated towards numerical simulation and seismic fragility assessment of one such RC-BCJ. The BCJ is loaded to failure and strengthened using Ultra High Performance-Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-HFRC) jacketing. The strengthening is performed for four different BCJ specimens, each representing an intermediate damage state before collapse. viz., slight, moderate, severe, and collapse. From the numerical simulation of all the BCJ specimens, an attempt is made to correlate different modelling and design parameters of the BC joint with respect to the damage states. In addition, seismic fragility analysis of the original as well as the retrofitted damaged BCJ specimens show the relative enhancement achieved in each case.

  • Recently, the closed landfills are usually converted into parks or playground by the check the stability of landfill because they settle unevenly making them unsuitable for structures. When the closed landfill reuse, environmental and structural stability is important. To increase the bearing capacity and reduce the probable settlement of a foundation on waste disposal ground, a layer of geosynthetics(Geocell) is placed on the waste disposal ground. In this paper, the analysis of long-term settlement parameter correlation was performed, also the evaluation of bearing capacity reinforcement effect was conducted by field test. The settlement measured in the field, and input the same ground index when an integer to identify each model were compared by calculating the settlement. In addition, by adjusting the parameters of each model to identify the most similar to the value of field measurement parameters were calculated. Based on the analysis results, when the using the Park's model C(intermediate) = 0.0678, the expected settlement is similar to the field measurement results. Also, the bearing capacity of geocell reinforced ground is 1.193~1.554 times higher than that of unreinforced ground.

  • Nowaday, most of the low-rise concrete structures which have less than five stories were built before the intensified seismic code was established 2005. According to the fact that our country is not a safety zone ay more, studies are need to reinforce the seismic performance of that structures. The basic frame of low-rise structure are consist of beams and columns with partition walls, therefore that are very weak about secondary wave of earthquake because of the high stiffness. The partition wall are consist of open channel for sunlight or ventilation and intermediate wall. The intermediate walls will enhance the stiffness of columns, but will cause shear failure with short column effects because of the reduced effective depth. But we don't have studies and adequate design code for partition wall effects, therefore some more studies are need for these facts.

  • The concrete structure is being considered for the main engineered barrier of low and intermediate level radwaste disposal facility. Concrete of low permeability can minimize infiltration of water and effectively prevent release of nuclide to ecosystem. But if concrete degrades, structural stability of disposal structure will decrease while permeability increase, resulting in increased possibility of nuclide release due to water infiltration. Therefore disposal concrete structure degradation shall be minimized to maintain capacity of nuclide isolation. The typical causes of concrete structure degradation are sulfide attack, reinforcement corrosion due to chloride attack, leaching of calcium hydroxide, alkali-aggregate reaction and repeated freezing-thawing. The common cause of these degradation processes is infiltration of water or adverse chemicals into concrete. Based on the study of these degradation characteristics and mechanisms of concrete structure, the methodology of design and service life evaluation of concrete structure as an engineered barrier are reviewed to ensure its long-term durability.
