  • Top synthetic spin valves with structure Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe(P 1)/Ru/CoFe(P2)/FeMn/Ta on Si (100) substrate with natural oxide were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering system. We have changed only the thickness in free layers and the thickness difference (Pl-P2) in two ferromagnetic layers separated by Ru, and investigated the effect of magnetic film thickness on interlayer coupling field in spin valve with synthetic antiferromagnet. According to the decrease of free layer thickness, interlayer coupling field was increased due to the magnetostatic coupling(orange peel coupling). In case of t$\_$P1/>t$\^$P2/, interlayer coupling field agreed well with the modified Neel model suggested in conventional spin valve structures by Kools et al. However, in case of t$\_$P1/>t$\^$P2/, it was found that the interlayer coupling field was not explained by the Modified Neel Model and was confirmed the necessity of further remodeling. The dependence of Cu thickness on the interlayer coupling field was investigated and 10 Oe of interlayer coupling field was obtained when the Cu thickness is 32 $\AA$.

  • The interlayer coupling between adjacent ferromagnetic layers was examined for CoFe/Cu/NiFe trilayer systems. A series of films of CoFe (20 nm)/Cu($t_{cu}$)/NiFe (20 nm) trilayers with Cu spacer thickness, $t_{cu}$, in the range of 1~10 m was deposited on Si(100) wafers at room temperature by DC magnetron sputtering. In order to understand the dependence of the magnetic interaction between ferromagnetic $Co_{90}Fe_{10}$ (wt.%) and $Ni_{81}Fe_{19}$ (wt.%) layers separated by a nonmagnetic Cu spacer on the Cu layer thickness, we investigated the derivative ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra. The FMR results were analyzed using the model of Layadi and Art-man for interlayer interaction. The interlayer coupling constant decreases in an oscillatory manner as the Cu spacer thickness increases up to 10 nm and approaches zero above 10 nm. The interlayer coupling constant is positive for all samples. Hence, it seems that the exchange coupling between adjacent CoFe and NiFe layers separated by a Cu layer is ferromagnetic.

  • The reflection-amplitude approximation is used to calculate the interlayer exchange coupling in (001) Co/Cu/Co multilayers. The dependence of the phase factor of the reflection amplitude on the energy and wave vector is included. The contribution of each period is calculated and the results are compared with those from the asymptotic behavior. It is shown that the energy and wave-vector dependence of the phase factor may affect the interlayer exchange coupling significantly.

  • In Fe/Gd multilayers, patterning effect on the interlayer coupling was studied by comparing patterned and unpatterned samples that were cut from a multilayer film. A comparative study of the two samples via temperature dependent Gd-specific magnetization vector using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) shows that the temperature dependence of the Gd magnetization vector can be modified in the patterned sample due to a competition between the patterning and antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling effects.

  • Effect of a ferromagnetic layer thickness on a narrow domain wall width is investigated. It is found that the narrow domain wall is formed in ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic multi layer structure with a loc at interlayer exchange coupling, and that the width of the narrow domain wall is affected by the ferromagnetic layer thickness. We performed micromagnetics simulations for the $Fe_1/Cr/Fe_2$ system with the local interlayer exchange coupling, with fixed thickness (20-nm) of $Fe_2$ layer and various $Fe_1$ layer thickness (1, 2, 4, and 6 nm). Consequently, we confirmed that the thinner the $Fe_1$ layer thickness, the thinner the width of the domain wall is formed, because of the surface energy nature of the interlayer exchange coupling.

  • As deposited and annealed MTJs with the structure of $Ta(5 nm)/Cu(10 nm)/Ta(5 nm)/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}(2 nm)/Cu(5 nm)/ Ir_{25}Mn_{75}(10 nm)/Co_{70}Fe_{30}(2.5 nm)/Al-O/Co_{70}Fe_{30}(2.5nm)/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}(t)/Ta(5nm)/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}(t)/Ta(5 nm)$, where t=10, 30, 60 and 100 nm were characterized by XRD and magnetic hysteresis loops measurements. The XRD measurements were done in grazing incidence $(GID scan-2{\theta})$ and ${\theta}-2{\theta}$ geometry, by rocking curve $(scan-{\omega})$ and pole figures in order to establish correlation between texture and crystallites size and magnetic parameters of exchange biased and interlayer coupling. The variations of shifting and coercivity field of free and pinned layers after annealing in $300^{\circ}C$ correlate with the improvement of [111] texture and grains size of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ and $Ir_{25}Mn_{75}$ respectively. The exchange biased and the coercivity fields of the pinned layer linearly increased with increasing grain size of $Ir_{25}Mn_{75}$, The reciprocal proportionality between interlayer coupling and coercivity fields of the free layer and grain size of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ was found. The enhancement of interlayer coupling between pinned and free layers, after annealing treatment, indicates on the correlated in-phase roughness of dipolar interacting interfaces due to increase of crystallites size of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$.

  • Top synthetic spin valves wi th structure Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe(Pl)/Ru/CoFe(P2)/FeMn/Ta on Si (100) substrate with SiO$_2$ of 1500 were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering system. We have changed only the thickness of the free layer and the thickness difference (Pl-P2) in the two ferromagnetic layers separated by Ru, and investigated the effect of magnetic film thickness on the GMR properties and the interlayer coupling field in a spin valve with a synthetic antiferromagnet. As thickness difference of pinned layer was decreased from +25 to -25 , MR ratio was decreased gradually. However, there was a dip zone indicating a big change of MR ratio around Pl = P2, which can be due to the large canting of pinned layers. The modified Neel model was suggested for the top synthetic spin valve to explain the interlayer coupling field according to the thickness change of ferromagnetic layers. The interlayer coupling field was decreased due to the magnetostatic coupling (orange peel coupling) as suggested by model. However, the interlayer coupling field was not explained at the dip zone by the modified Neel model. The deviation of modified Neel model at the dip zone could be due to the largely canting of the pinned layers as well, which depends on different thickness in synthetic antiferromagnetic structure.

  • We report theoretical investigation on the polarization selective coupling characteristics of a side-polished fiber directional coupler with a thin metal interlayer. Based on normal mode theory the coupling properties of the device under various structural conditions are analyzed. It is shown that the coupling strength between TE modes weakens rapidly with increase or metal interlayer thickness, whereas that between TM modes becomes stronger. The design conditions of the polarization splitter using the coupler to achieve high extinction ratio and low insertion loss are presented.

  • NiO thickness dependences of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in the $NiO/[CoFe/Pt]_5$ multilayers for exchange biasing and $[CoFe/Pt]_4/Pt/[CoFe/Pt]_4$ for interlayer exchange coupling were investigated. Perpendicular magnetization curve was obtained by out-of-plane extraordinary Hall measurement. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) has been used for the investigation of magnetic domains on thin films. We confirmed that the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) as a function of NiO thickness at room temperature existed with a period of two monolayers.
