Over the course of time, changes occur in family composition and members, and such changes impact housing life as well. In contrast to shared housing structures such as apartments, detached houses show a greater variety of changes to interior spaces such as family composition, rural area, natural environment, and modernization. The purpose of this study is to examine the change and factors in interior spaces in detached houses of rural area. Out of 40 houses studied in a 1995 survey, 23 showed changes when studied again in 2015, and 13 were selected for final analysis. This study indicated that at the time of the survey in 1995, two aspects of change occurred which showed in interior space only and internalization through interior-specific additions and improvements. An analysis of interior changes demonstrated there was significant change in kitchens, multipurpose rooms, and other spaces focused on housework and homemaking. Internalization through interior-specific is showed in balcony. As family member is increasing, it is intended to be increasing size of interior space; however, it is showed to increase size of interior space in the step that family member is reducing. It is reason that more spaces are needed when their children whose the old are living in detached houses of rural area are visited.

In order to understand the characteristics of the Japanese conception of space, we examined the characteristics of Japanese human geography, schools of thought, and aesthetics through the examinations on relevant documents. In addition, we reorganized such cultural backgrounds in relation to the Japanese perception of space, extracting the fundamental principles and elements of Japanese space composition and examining their significance. We propose a structural framework for understanding and analyzing Japanese space based on the reciprocal relationship and meaning among the various elements of Japanese space. Using this analytical framework, we studied the representative works of Japanese interior space, concluding in an analysis of the expressive characteristics of the Japanese notion of space.

The purpose of this research is to suggest the ultimate solution to the interior elements and ways to express specific function within interior design of the new high-speed train station in Korea through careful studies based on the characteristics of each areas in the stations. During the research, it became very clear that the most important points in designing of the high speed train station's interior space can be found from close examination on whether each space allocation was thoughtfully organized to provide enough space to accommodate various activities of the users. Another point is to realize, within the space program, that there should be a clear understanding of the future expansion plan and reserving sufficient areas for the future growth. Also the problem of requiring larger floor areas to accommodate various functions divided by separate units must be recognized simultaneously during the programming. The new high-sped train must be able to function as a multi service facility of the future. In summary this research is to present datas and suggestion to various areas in the station and redefine its new meaning of train station space program with much borader concept which can be adopted to the process of better space programing.

This paper presents an attempt to develop a visual programming language-based 3D virtual reality authoring tool intended to compose virtual interior space. The rapid development of digital technology and the wide spread of the Intenet have expanded the different uses of virtual reality in a number of applications ranging from interior design to building maintenance. In particular, the construction of cyber spaces based on existing interior spaces is becoming increasingly important. Current research, however, remains at the level of converting 3D models into virtual reality models, despite practitioners' needs for structural space models. Moreover, commercial tools to build virtual reality space have the disadvantage of targeting people who have professional knowledge of computer programs and computer graphics. Accordingly, the 3D virtual reality authoring tool developed in this research - called the VESL system - enables virtual and structural space to be easily composed using intuitive and interactive visual interfaces, which are based on visual programming techniques. The VESL system also provides an XML based semantic description of interior space, to be used to describe interior space information. We anticipate that the virtual reality spaces composed by this system will be of considerable use in the fields of architecture and interior design. Further research issues identified at the end of the research include developing a converter/filter for transforming Internet virtual reality standard language, or VRML, and evaluating the application of the system for practical use.

I paid attention to the fact that surrealism emerging in early 20th century has been resurfacing in the 21st century. It may be because of the increasing interest on the space showing the surrealistic features as people in these days prefer the experimental and dramatic space beyond repetitive daily life. I tried to identify the expressive characteristics in the interior space adopting the depaysement technique among a variety of expression techniques of surrealism. To this end, this paper selected 10 interior design projects by Fabio Novembre and Marcel Wanders since 2000s. As the methodology, chapter 2 examined the theories to identify the expression targets and approaches of depaysement around the art paintings. Next, the standard for case analysis in this paper was established by investigating the existing theses related to interior and space design with depaysement as the key word. The expressive characteristics of depaysement identified from the existing researches were classified into morphological, figurative, material and space program. Those programs were developed as the classification system in this paper. Chapter 3 described the design background and features of Fabio Novembre and Marcel Wanders. On the basis of the features and analysis framework identified in chapter 2 and 3, chapter 4 analyzed the features of depaysement observed in the works by both designers. The conclusion was presented in chapter 5. For the expressive characteristics of depaysement observed in the space by both designers, Novembre created optical illusion using distortion or overlap on the morphological aspect. Wanders showed mainly the feature of changing the scale. In accordance with the analysis on expression principles, the features including spatial continuity, ambiguity of border, visual amusement and uncertainty were differentiated in all spaces.

Assuming that different spatial types involves the change of observation time to acquire the spatial information, this study intended to analyze the observation time by interior space types and derive the proper time for spatial evaluation. Coming to the study method, in order to analyze the characteristics of observation time in the image evaluation of interior space by types, it looked into the observation time chosen by the testees during evaluation. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the observation time differed by genders and spatial types: men's average time was longest for modern (93.3 sec.) and natural (89.4 sec.) spaces; women's average time was longest for classic space (110.7 sec.), which was the shortest for men. Second, the intensity of observation time zone differed by spatial types: this finding can imply that different design types require different establishment of observation time for evaluation even if the spatial elements are the same. Third, analyzing the distribution of time zones chosen by most testees showed that men's observation time zones were more intensely distributed than those of women. Fourthly, the observation lime for general space could be derived from the gender-based comparison that excluded the difference by types, but considering that different design types lead to different observation time, it could be seen as proper for evaluation of interior space to establish the difference of observation time by spatial types. Finally, Analysis showed the highest preference to the time '(3)'. However, obtaining information presented is the most highly effective time is '(6). Thus, the preferred time zone is different and effective, according to the results of the analysis.

The material world around human is normally composed of opaque one, with which human has made the spaces. The opaque material to make space has played a role to control the relationship among people and has produced socio-cultural things since the history started. The opening of opaque material(wall) connects one space with the other. Therefore, the meaning of opening is a connection among people who are in different spaces in terms of sociology. In conjunction with this, socio-cultural situation has been deployed differently. In the traditional european domestic space, the glass has been applied to this opening since they found the glass. It disconnects two spaces physically but connects them visually. Therefore, without blocking the opening visually, the glass became to protect people with their interior space from outside environment. The important thing is that the application of the glass in a building had been restricted because of opening size. However, after Industrial Revolution with the advanced technology of architecture, the glass came to be applied to the building and it became widen. So, the concept of glass window became to be the one of glass wall. This change made a transformation of visual character between two spaces which are separated with glass wall. This means that the glass wall gave two directional visibility while the glass window gave one directional visibility from inside to outside of space. This is because the amount of the natural light to the interior space increased due to widen glass in a space. This gave a change of visual authority and the space of surveillance(interior space) became to the one of communication. The space of surveillance, Michel Foucault mentioned in his book surveillance and punishment, is a very private one that is not visually permeable from the people outside, while the space of communication is a public one which needs other eyes. In the space of publicity, there needs a rationality, morality and ethics because of public surveillance and in the space of privacy, there restores a desire for sex and assaults.

Ron Arad, the master of contemporary design in the U.K., is one of representative leaders of this age who has left distinguished achievements in the history of contemporary design through innovative design. Analyzing and understanding the Deconstructive design concept and the deconstructive characteristics of interior space of Ron Arad will contribute to finding directions for today's design and laying the ground for explaining the development pattern of design in the 21st century. After analyzing the deconstructive characteristics of each selected space, One Off and Ron Arad Associates have shown a deconstructive design trend of a creative formula by using methods that shed conventional processes and material while a space composition and form of new concept was attempted in the resting space of the New Tel Aviv Opera House, offering not only the establishment of a new circulation system, but also diverse experiences of space to visitors. Likewise, a temporal experience and communication between the user and the space was attempted in Belgo Noord and Belgo Central by partially applying a narrative space composition that sheds existing design concepts. At the Millennium House, they have produced an interior space for future house developed by breaking off from existing typical design development work and material through computer operation, and made various forms of space and atmosphere possible by attempting variable elements and the use of ultramodern material. Y's fashion shop has granted variability to the form and volume of space according to time by presenting display elements that have shed existing form and function. Hotel Puerta America as well, with a curved structure that has broken off with existing forms and maximized space variability through structures that have utilized ultramodern materials and instruments. Through this study, it has been verified that Ron Arad has been unraveling connections between interior space and its user, its requirements, and the original unique principles of space by applying deconstructive design concepts, and that through the mediation of these spaces, he is attempting indirect communication with the user. Eventually, he is taking part in the harmony and development of all elements of space connected with human beings by applying deconstructive design concepts.

The factors to limit interior circumstance and the expression of the space start In the point how to provide the order in the interior space according to the intention of design. The controlling of the natural and artificial surroundings should be focused by synthesizing and analyzing the condition of circumstance, function, and emotion to provide the comfortable room to a customer in a fitness center. A fitness center aiming at the future requires various function according to it's role depending on the change of the social values. In addition, the fitness center reflecting the various regional culture according to the change of values requires the expansion of the cultural and life space. The characteristics of fitness space like this affects the mental effect of a customer with the color and quality of the materials suitable for the characteristics of grouping, continuity, symbolism, and generation as well as the unification in the total design and the simplicity of maintenance and management. The paper aims to extract factors related to the circumstance plan of the interior and to suggest it's application in the interior design. The design applicable to the circumstance plan of the interior will keep changing according to the social change and the change of the understanding along with the factors. The continuous research on the interior circumstance planning of a fitness center could be approach to develop in a systematic method and the paper will be expected to be a little step toward it.

This study aims at exploring the characteristics of interior design of the Cruise line running Korea, Japan and China, and the satisfaction level of the Korean passengers for the interior design. Literature review and the physical traces of the cruise ship interior including 4 types of cabins and public spaces such as main hall, restaurants, outdoor swimming pool, jogging track, theater, meeting room, duty-free shop were performed. Also, the questionnaire to the passengers were used to understand their preferences and satisfaction level for each space. The results show that the passengers are very satisfied with the color and atmosphere of the cabin, while they complain the inconvenience of the bathroom size. Also in the public space, they prefer western classic style and modern style rather than Asian or Korean style. This means that they want the exotic feeling coming out of home. Also they prefer buffet restaurant, duty-free shop, theater, observation platform compared to other public spaces. However, the problem is that there are no place for the Korean family members with young children except for the outdoor pool. The interior and the program should be redesigned for the public spacs such as cinema room, family karaoke and internet-free room for Korean passengers.
