Damage sensing of polymer composite films consisting of poly(dicyclopentadiene) p-DCPD and carbon nanotube (CNT) was studied experimentally. Only up to 1st ring-opening polymerization occurred with the addition of CNT, which made the modified film electrically conductive, while interfering with polymerization. The interfacial adhesion of composite films with varying CNT concentration was evaluated by measuring the wettability using the static contact angle method. 0.5 wt% CNT/p-DCPD was determined to be the optimal condition via electrical dispersion method and tensile test. Dynamic fatigue test was conducted to evaluate the durability of the films by measuring the change in electrical resistance. For the initial three cycles, the change in electrical resistance pattern was similar to the tensile stress-strain curve. The CNT/p-DCPD film was attached to an epoxy matrix to demonstrate its utilization as a sensor for fracture behavior. At the onset of epoxy fracture, electrical resistance showed a drastic increase, which indicated adhesive fracture between sensor and matrix. It leads to prediction of crack and fracture of matrix.
In order to improve the mechanical properties of jute fiber/polypropylene(PP) composites, the property change with the addition of a coupling agent, maleic anhydride polypropylene(MAPP) was examined experimentally. The maleated coupler acts as an intermediate to chemically connect the polar nature of the fiber and non-polar nature of the polyolefin polymer resin. Furthermore, the decrease in viscosity of the resin which results from the melting point reduction by the MAPP, leads to an increase of contact area with the fiber interface. We discussed the improvement of the PP composite blend of the maleated coupler with the 80mm jute long fiber mat in conjunction with the change of physical parameters in the thermoplastic resin. We confirmed the extent of contribution to the mechanical physical enhancement by using the following parameters: melting flow index(MI) and viscosity, contact angle, thickness of the composite, interfacial shear strength and morphology observation etc. Especially it was observed that the MI and viscosity, MAPP mixture had a very strong relationship with the tensile and flexural strength and modulus, and interfacial shear strength(IFSS).
One of the important irradiation performance characteristics of the silicide dispersion fuel element in research reactors is the diameteral increase resulting from fuel swelling. This paper, will attempt to develop a physical model for the fuel swelling, DFSWELL, by analyzing the basic irradiation behaviours and some experimental evidences. From the experimental evidences, it was shown that the volume changes in irradiated U$_3$Si-Al were strongly dependent on temperature and fission rate. The quantitative-amount of swelling for silicide fuel is estimated by considering temperature, fission rate, solid fission product build-up and gas bubble behavior. The swelling for the silicide fuel is comprised of three major components : i ) a volume change due to the formation of an interfacial layer between the fuel particle and matrix. ii ) a volume change due to the accumulation of gas bubble nucleation iii ) a volume change due to the accumulation of solid fission products The DFSWELL model which takes into account the above three major physical components predicts well the absolute magnitude of silicide fuel swelling in accordance with the power histories in comparison with the experimental data.
For thermal adaptable fabrics, the polyurethane-urea microcapsules containing phase-change materials (PCMs: hexadecane, octadecane and eicosane) were successfully synthesized by interfacial polycondensation using 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400)/ethylene diamine (EDA) as shell monomers and nonionic surfactant NP-12 in an emulsion system under stirring rates of $3,000{\sim}13,000$ rpm. The mean particle size of microcapsule decreased significantly with increasing the stirring rate up to 11,000 rpm, and then leveled off. The mean particle size increased with increasing the content and molecular weight (eicosane > octadecane > hexadecane) of PCMs at the same stirring rate. The mean particle sizes of microcapsules were found to decrease with increasing the NP-12 content up to 1.5 wt%, and thereafter increased a little. It was found that the melting temperature ($T_m$) and crystallization temperature ($T_c$) of three kinds of encapsulated PCMs and their enthalpy changes (${\Delta}H_m,{\Delta}H_c$) increased with increasing PCM contents. The encapsulation efficiencies (Ee) of hexadecane microcapsule linearly increased with increasing the content of hexadecane. It was found that the stable microcapsule containing 50 wt% of hexadecane could be obtained in this study. However, Ee of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules increased with increasing PCM's contents up to 40 wt%, and then decreased a little. By considering the encapsulation efficiency, it was found that the maximum/optimum contents of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules were about 40 wt%. By the dynamic thermal performance test, it was found that the maximum buffering levels of Nylon fabrics coated with hexadecane, octadecane, and eicosane microcapsules were about $-2.4/+2.9^{\circ}C,\;-3.6/+3.6^{\circ}C\;and\;-4.0/+4.7^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Cobalt oxide nanostructure materials have been prepared by adding several concentrations of spectator Ni ions in solution, and analyzed by electron microscopy, X-day diffraction, calorimetry/thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis absorption, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electron microscopy results show that the morphology of the nanostructures is dramatically altered by changing the concentration of spectator ions. The bulk XRD patterns of $350^{\circ}C$-annealed samples indicate that the structure of the cobalt oxide is all of cubic Fd-3m $Co_3O_4$, and show that the major XRD peaks shift slightly with the concentration of Ni ions. In Raman spectroscopy, we can confirm the XRD data through a more obvious change in peak position, broadness, and intensity. For the un-sputtered samples in the XPS measurement process, the XPS peaks of Co 2p and O 1s for the samples prepared without Ni ions exhibit higher binding energies than those for the sample prepared with Ni ions. Upon $Ar^+$ ion sputtering, we found $Co_3O_4$ reduces to CoO, on the basis of XPS data. Our study could be further applied to controlling morphology and surface oxidation state.
In this study, nano-crystallized $Al_2O_3$ was coated on the surface of $LiFePO_4$ powders via a novel dry coating method. The influence of coated $LiFePO_4$ upon electrochemical behavior was discussed. Surface morphology characterization was achieved by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), clearly showing nano-crystallized $Al_2O_3$ on $LiFePO_4$ surfaces. Furthermore, it revealed that the $Al_2O_3$-coated $LiFePO_4$ cathode exhibited a distinct surface morphology. It was also found that the $Al_2O_3$ coating reduces capacity fading especially at high charge/discharge rates. Results from the cyclic voltammogram measurements (2.5-4.2 V) showed a significant decrease in both interfacial resistance and cathode polarization. This behavior implies that $Al_2O_3$ can prevent structural change of $LiFePO_4$ or reaction with the electrolyte on cycling. In addition, the $Al_2O_3$ coated $LiFePO_4$ compound showed highly improved area-specific impedance (ASI), an important measure of battery performance. From the correlation between these characteristics of bare and coated $LiFePO_4$, the role of $Al_2O_3$ coating played on the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ was probed.
In this paper, it is intended to present more reproducible and quantitative method for adhesion assemssement. In scratch test, micromechanical analysis on the stress state beneath the indenter was carried out considering the additional blister field. The interface adhesion was quantified as work of adhesion through Griffith energy approach on the basis of the analyzed stress state. The work of adhesion for DLC film/WC-Co substrate calculated through the proposed analysis shows the identical value regardless of distinctly different critical loads measured with the change of film thickness and scratching speed. On the other hand, uniaxial loading was imposed on DCL film/Al substrate, developing the transverse film cracks perpendicular to loading direction. Since this film cracking behavior depends on the relative magnitude of adhesion strength to film fracture strength, the quantification of adhesion strength was given a trial through the micromechanical analysis of adhesion-dependence of film cracking patterns. The interface shear strength can be quantified from the measurement of strain $\varepsilon$s and crack spacing $\lambda$ at the cessation of film cracking.
The emulsion stability of cosmetic creams based on the water-in-oil (W/O) high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) containing water, squalane oil and cetyl dimethicone copolyol was investigated with various compositional changes, such as electrolyte concentration, oil polarity and water phase volume fraction. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The slope change of complex modulus versus water phase volume fraction monitored in the linear viscoelastic region could be explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsions: the greater the increase of complex modulus was, the more the coalescence occurred and the less consistent the emulsions were. Emulsion stability was dependent on the addition of electrolyte to the water phase. Increasing the electrolyte concentration increased the refractive index of the water phase, and thus decreased the refractive index difference between oil and water phases. This decreased the attractive force between water droplets, which resulted in reducing the coalescence of droplets and increasing the stability of emulsions. Increasing the oil polarity tended to increase emulsion consistency, but did not show clear difference in cream hardness among the emulsions.

Polyethylene is a typical hydrophobic material and it is difficult to bond the polyethylene material with metal material. Thus, it is important to modify the surface of polyethylene material to improve the bonding strength between the polyethylene and the metal materials. In this study, the surface modification of polyethylene material was investigated to improve the interfacial strength between the polyethylene and the steel materials. Polyethylene material was surface-modified in a plasma cleaner using an oxygen gas. Two cases of composites (surface-modified pelyethylene/steel composite and regular (as-received) pelyethylene/steel composite) were fabricated using a secondary bonding method. Shear and bending tests have been performed using the two cases of composites. The results showed that the contact angle did not change much as the modification time increased. However, the contact angle decreased from ${\sim}76^{\circ}\; to\;{\sim}41^{\circ}$ with the modification. The results also showed that the shear strength and the bending strength were improved about 3030 % and 7 %, respectively when the polyethylene was plasma-modified using an oxygen gas.
This paper reviews our recent research works on the interconnection technologies in electronic packaging and assembly. At the aspect of advanced joining methods, laser-ultrasonic fluxless soldering technology was proposed. The characteristic of this technology is that the oxide film was removed through the vibration excitated by high frequency laser change in the molten solder droplet. Application researches of laser soldering technology on solder bumping of BGA packages were carried out. Furthermore, interfacial reaction between SnPb eutectic solder and Au/Ni/Cu pad during laser reflow was analyzed. At the aspect of soldered joints' reliability, the system for predicting and analyzing SMT solder joint shape and reliability(PSAR) has been designed. Optimization design method of soldered joints' structure was brought forward after the investigation of fatigue failure of RC chip devices and BGA packages under temperature cyclic conditions with FEM analysis and experimental study. At the aspect of solder alloy design, alloy design method based on quantum was proposed. The macroproperties such as melting point, wettability and strength were described by the electron parameters. In this way, a great deal of the experimental investigations was replaced, so as to realize the design and research of any kinds of solder alloys with low cost and high efficiency.
