This paper presents experimental results of rock-concrete bi-material discs under cyclically diametrical compression. It was found that both specimens under cyclical and static loading failed in three typical modes: shear crack, tensile crack and a combined mode of shear and wing crack. The failure modes transited gradually from the shear crack to the tensile one by increasing the interface angle between the interface and the loading direction. The cycle number and peak load increased by increasing the interface angle. The number of cycles and peak load increased with the interface groove depth and groove width, however, decreased with increase in interface groove spacing. The concrete strength can contribute more to the cycle number and peak load for specimens with a higher interface angle. Compared with the discs under static loading, the cyclically loaded discs had a lower peak load but a larger deformation. Finally, the effects of interface angle, interface asperity and concrete strength on the fatigue strength were also discussed.
The effect of bonding misfit on single crystallization of transient liquid phase (TLP) bonded joints of single crystal superalloy CMSX-2 was investigated using MBF-80 insert metal. The bonding misfit was defined by (100) twist angle (rotating angle) at bonded interface. TLP bonding of specimens was carried out at 1523K for 1.8ks in vacuum. The post-bond heat treatment consisted of the solution and sequential two step aging treatment was conducted in the Ar atmosphere. The crystallographic orientation analysis across the TLP bonded joints was conducted three dimensionally using the electron back scattering pattern (EBSP) method. EBSP analyses f3r the bonded and post bonded heat treated specimens were conducted. All bonded joints had misorientation centering around the bonded interface for as-bonded and post-bond heat treated specimens with rotating angle. The average misorientation angle between both solid phases in bonded interlayer was almost identical to the rotating angle at bonded interface. HRTEM observation revealed that the atom arrangement of both solid phases in bonded interlayer was quite different across the bonded interface. It followed that grain boundary was formed in bonded interface. It was confirmed that epitaxial growth of the solid phase occurred from the base metal substrates during TLP bonding and single crystallization could not be achieved in joints with rotating angle.

The interface friction angle between soil and fibers is important to evaluate improvement of the shear strength on fiber mixed soils. Direct shear test and pullout tort conducted by an apparatus made specially for the purpose of this study, was analyzed to know how fiber and soils affect on interface friction angle. By the results, The value of interface friction angle of sandy soils is larger than that of clayey soils. As a diameter of fiber is large, the value of friction coefficient of sandy soil is increase and that of clayey soil is decrease. An interface friction angle of well graded soil is larger value than that of uniform graded soil
In order to understand the shear mechanical properties of the interface between clay and structure and better serve the practical engineering projects, it is critical to conduct shear tests on the clay-structure interface. In this work, the direct shear test of clay-concrete slab with different joint roughness coefficient (JRC) of the interface and different normal stress is performed in the laboratory. Our experimental results show that (1) shear strength of the interface between clay and structure is greatly affected by the change of normal stress under the same condition of JRC and shear stress of the interface gradually increases with increasing normal stress; (2) there is a critical value JRCcr in the roughness coefficient of the interface; (3) the relationship between shear strength and normal stress can be described by the Mohr Coulomb failure criterion, and the cohesion and friction angle of the interface under different roughness conditions can be calculated accordingly. We find that there also exists a critical value JRCcr for cohesion and the cohesion of the interface increases first and then decreases as JRC increases. Moreover, the friction angle of the interface fluctuates with the change of JRC and it is always smaller than the internal friction angle of clay used in this experiment; (4) the failure type of the interface of the clay-concrete slab is type I sliding failure and does not change with varying JRC when the normal stress is small enough. When the normal stress increases to a certain extent, the failure type of the interface will gradually change from shear failure to type II sliding failure with the increment of JRC.
In this study, a series of direct shear tests were performed to investigate the characteristics of friction angles for sands and interface friction angle between sands and construction materials with respect to different relative density of the Nak-dong River sands and shearing velocity. The result of the test shows that friction angles of sands are always higher than interface friction angle between sands and construction materials. As the shearing velocity get faster, the friction angles of sand became higher. With respect to the density of sand by reducing void ratio, friction angles increase linearly, and relevant equations were proposed to calculate the friction angle by changing void ratio and relative density of sand. The interface roughness of construction materials was also an important factor in interface friction angle.
This study examined the effects of socket flexion angle in trans-tibial prosthesis on stump/socket interface pressure. Ten trans-tibial amputees voluntarily participated in this study. F-socket system was used to measure static and dynamic pressure in stump/socket interface. The pressure was measured at anterior area (proximal, middle, and distal) and posterior area (proximal, middle, and distal) in different socket flexion angles ($5^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and $10^{\circ}$). Paired t-test was used to compare pressure differences in conventional socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$ with pressures in socket flexion angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $10^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}$=.05). Mean pressure during standing in socket flexion angle of $10^{\circ}$ decreased significantly in anterior middle area (19.7%), posterior proximal area (10.4%), and posterior distal area (16.3%) compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$. Mean pressure during stance phase in socket flexion angle of $0^{\circ}$ increased significantly in anterior proximal area (19.3%) and decreased significantly in anterior distal area (19.7%) compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$. Mean pressure during stance phase in socket flexion angle of $10^{\circ}$ decreased significantly in anterior proximal area (19.6%) and increased significantly in anterior distal area (8.2%) compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$. Peak pressure during gait in socket flexion angle of $0^{\circ}$ increased significantly in anterior proximal area (23.0%) compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$ and peak pressure during gait in socket flexion angle of $10^{\circ}$ decreased significantly in anterior proximal area (22.7%) compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$. Mean pressure over 80% of peak pressure ($MP_{80+}$) during gait in socket flexion angle of $0^{\circ}$ increased significantly in anterior proximal area (23.9%) and decreased significantly in anterior distal area (22.5%) compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$. $MP_{80+}$ during gait in socket flexion angle of $10^{\circ}$ decreased significantly in anterior distal area (34.1%) compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$. Asymmetrical pressure change patterns in socket flexion angle of $0^{\circ}$ and $10^{\circ}$ were revealed in anterior proximal and distal region compared with socket flexion angle of $5^{\circ}$. To provide comfortable and safe socket for trans-tibial amputee, socket flexion angle must be considered.
When a Gaussian beam is incident to a planar dielectric interface at an angle other than Brewster angle or the critical angle of total reflection, we derive the six nonspecular effects of rotation, lateral shift, focal shift, Rayleigh length change, magnitude and phase changes in the complex amplitude of the reflected beam simultaneously by taking account of the boundary condition. In the derivation we assume a Gaussian beam of fundamental mode to emerge from the interface and then match at the interface the constant, linear, and quadratic variations of the amplitude and phase of the reflected beam with those of the incident beam multiplied by the reflection coefficient. Our calculation shows that the six nonspecular effects can result from a linear variation of the natural logarithm of the reflection coefficient at the interface.
A series of direct shear tests were conducted to investigate the frictional properties of the interface between structures and the filling soil of Chongqing airport fourth stage expansion project. Two types of structures are investigated, one is low carbon steel and the other is the bedrock sampled from the site. The influence of soil water content, surface roughness and material types of structure were analyzed. The tests show that the interface friction and shear displacement curve has no softening stage and the curve shape is close to the Clough-Duncan hyperbola, while the soil is mainly shear contraction during testing. The interface frictional resistance and normal stress curve meets the Mohr-Coulomb criterion and the derived friction angle and frictional resistance of interface increase as surface roughness increases but is always lower than the internal friction angle and shear strength of soil respectively. When surface roughness is much larger than soil grain size, soil-structure interface is nearly shear surface in soil. In addition to the geometry of structural surface, the material types of structure also affects the performance of soil-structure interface. The wet interface frictional resistance will become lower than the natural one under specific conditions.
Soil-rock interface, mainly founded in Granite region of Korea, is known as one of the important factor of the slope failure at the rainfall due to smaller shear strength than soil itself. However, research of the effect on slope stability by soil-rock interfaces is insufficient. Therefore, a series of direct shear tests were performed in order to investigate the effect of soil-rock interface on slope stability. The method of tests is to get sand itself and sand-artificial rock interface shear strength from different grain size of sands and artificial rock samples. The results of tests show that the friction angle of interface depends primarily on particle size and surface roughness. Interface friction angle ratio ${\mu}(={\delta}/{\Phi})$ is in the range of 0.75 ~ 0.96, this results indicate that interface friction angle is smaller than sand itself.
The present study proposed a new interface system for capsule endoscopy by using head mounted display (HMD) device, which can control the orientation of the capsule endoscope with electromagnetic actuator (EMA) system. The orientation information of the HMD user was detected by the gyroscope sensor built into the device and then calculated to as an angle increment using Unity Engine compiler. The measured angle changes from the HMD were converted to the current values of the corresponding coils to be changed in the EMA system. Two experiments were designed to measure the accuracy and the intuitiveness of the HMD interface system. In the angle accuracy measurement, the capsule endoscope driven by HMD interface system showed the averaged errors of 0.68 degrees horizontally and 1.001 degrees vertically for given test angles. In the intuitiveness measurement, HMD interface system showed 1.33 times faster manipulation speed rather than the joystick interface system. In this respect, the HMD interface system for capsule endoscopy was expected to improve the overall diagnostic environment while maintaining comfort of patients and clinicians.
