Material and geometric properties of hoop-type PZT interface for damage-sensitive impedance responses in prestressed tendon anchorage

  • In this study, parametric analyses on a hoop-type PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) interface are performed to estimate the effects of the PZT interface's materials and geometries on sensitivities of impedance responses under strand breakage. The paper provides a guideline for installing the PZT interface suitable in tendon anchorages for damage-sensitive impedance signatures. Firstly, the concept of the PZT interface-based impedance monitoring technique in prestressed tendon anchorage is briefly described. A FE (finite element) analysis is conducted on a multi-strands anchorage equipped with a hoop-type PZT interface for analyzing materials and geometric effects. Various material properties, geometric sizes of the interface, and PZT sensor are simulated under two states of prestressing force for acquiring impedance responses. Changes in impedance signals are statistically quantified to analyze the effect of these factors on damage-sensitive impedance monitoring in the tendon anchorage. Finally, experimental analyses are performed to demonstrate the effects of materials and geometrical properties of the PZT interface on damage-sensitive impedance monitoring.

  • An unified measure of user interface efficiency and aesthetics for cyber museum is proposed. First, general structure of cyber museum is discussed and hierarchical analyses are done for sample sites. Usability tests based on the hierarchical analyses yield statistics of user access frequency and persistency for each page, on which access probability is deduced. Second, visual occupancy, a measure of efficiency of user interface element based on access probability is defined. The hierarchical statistics of visual occupancy can be an index for characterization and classification of cyber museums. Examples are provided.

Estimation of Tensile Strain Effect Factor of Layer Interface Considering Lateral Loads of Moving Vehicle (주행차량의 수평하중을 고려한 층 경계면의 인장변형률 영향계수 개발)

  • Structural pavement analysis considering lateral loads of moving vehicle was carried out in order to simulate passing vehicle loads under various interface conditions. To verify of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of layer interface effect parameters, this study compared outputs by using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program and KENLAYER, multi-layer elastic analysis as vertical load was applied to the surface of asphalt pavements. Pavement performance depending on interface conditions was quantitatively evaluated and fundamental study of layer interface effect parameters was performed in this study. As results of the study, if only vertical loads of moving vehicle is applied, subdivision of either fully bonded or fully unbonded is enough to indicate interface effect parameters. On the other hand, when lateral loads are applied with vertical loads, pavement behavior and performance are greatly changed with respect to layer interface conditions. The thinner thickness of the asphalt layer is and the smaller elastic moduli of the asphalt layer is, the more pavement behavior is influenced by interface conditions. In addition, regression analysis equation analytically computing tensile strain which was considered thicknesses and elastic moduli of the asphalt layer and layer interface effect parameters at the bottom of the asphalt layer was presented using database from numerical analyses on national pavement model sections.

  • We developed an optimal design interface based on VBA(Visual Basic Application) that takes advantage of API(Application Program Interface) function of commonly used EM analysis software. The developed interface is adopted for an optimal design of a septum in a waveguide tee junction using PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm. The objective function of the optimal design is defined by $S_{11}$-parameter of the waveguide tee junction Design variables are established as position of the septum, that are changed to satisfy the design goal Using the developed design interface and PSO algorithm, the objective function converged to the smallest value, showing the validity of the proposed method. The design interface was developed using Microsoft Excel software, enabling easy control of design parameters for user. Also, various analysis parameters can be set in the Excel interface, including waveguide input mode and frequency. After completion of the design, field solutions at user-specified positrons can be extracted to the output files in complex number form.

  • There have been large research activities on the high quality oxide films for the realization oxide based electronics. However, the interface interdiffusion prohibits achieving high quality oxide films, when the oxide films are grown on non-oxide substrates. In the case of Si substrates, there exist lattice mismatch and interface interdiffusion when oxide films deposited on direct Si surface. In this presentation, we report the interface characteristics of yttria-stabilized zirconia films grown on silicon substrates. From x-ray reflectivity analysis we found that the film thickness and interface roughness decreased as the growth temperature increased, indicating that the growth mechanism varies and the chemical reaction is limited to the interface as the growth condition varies. Furthermore, the packing density of the film increased as the growth temperature increased and the film thickness decreased. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of very thin films revealed that the amount of chemical shift increased as the growth temperature increased. Intriguingly, the direction of the chemical shift of Zr was opposite to that of Si due to the second nearest neighbor interaction.

  • The purpose of study is to investigate the current user interface level of air traffic control system with the usability analysis and satisfaction survey questionnaire on user satisfaction. Think aloud protocol is used to identify not only task analysis, but also the level of user-friendliness of the FIMS and ASDE system, and the user interface questionnaires was conducted by QUIS. We collected data from 6 controllers for Think aloud protocol and 15 controllers for QUIS in Incheon airport. The results showed that the system was the valuable tool for ensuring human performance with the support of memory and the facilitation of decision-making tasks. It helps air traffic controllers perform better and minimize errors in a congested time. The human-computer interface system design, however, was not applied, which led to the increase of workload. Air traffic controller participation in software development provided excellent examples for applications in terms of software in FIMS. Based on these results, the study provided that the usability of system interface was necessary to take into account human factors.   • The analysis of flux distribution under stead-state in large power reactors with assymetry reactivity insertions requires the use of three-dimensional diffusion calculations. For the purpose, consistently formulated modern nodal methods based on higher order interface techniques have become popular tools for flux distributions in large commercial nuclear reactors. Among the earlier developments, the nodal Green's function method obtains its nodal interface equation from the transverse-integrated integral diffusion equation using a finite-medium Green's function. In this method, the outgoing current from a node surface is formulated as a response of the incoming currents and the spatially integrated neutron source within the same node. The well-known nodal expansion method is also based on an interface partial current formulation. Nodal methods high-level interface variables, i.e., interface net current and flux, may be more computationally efficient than the nodal Green's function method because they have one fewer unknown per interface. The Analytic Nodal Method(ANM), which can be classified as an interface net current technique and, was faster in solving some standard benchmark problems than the other two methods.(omitted)

  • Friction stir welding(FSW) was studied using commercial tool, FLOW-3D. The purpose of this study is to suggest a method to apply frictional heat in Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Cylindrical tool shape was used, and the interface cells between tool surface and workpiece were tracked by its geometrical relations in order to consider the frictional heat in FSW. After tracking the interface cells, average area concept was used to calculate the frictional heat, which is related to interface area. Also three-dimensional heat source and visco-plastic flow were modeled. The frictional heat generation rate calculated numerically from the suggested algorithm was validated with the analytical solution. The numerical solution was well matched with the analytical solution, and the maximum percentage of error was around 3%.

  • In this paper we analyzed a dangerous failure and a safety requirement based on HIA (Hazard Identification and Analysis) of an interface model between CTC (Centralized Traffic Control) system and El (Interlocking) system, and assigned SU (Safety Integrity Level) by way of an risk estimation of the interface, which employed PHA (Preliminary Hazard Analysis) for the interface of the track control system, being managed as separated system between the centralized traffic control system and the interlocking system, An estimation which satisfies a safety reference of the international standard has been achieved through a quantification of the system failure rate and the dangerous failure rate of the interface model.

Interface friction in the service load assessment of slab-on-girder bridge beams

  • Many slab-on-girder bridges around the world are being assessed because they are approaching the end of their anticipated design lives or codes are permitting higher allowable loads. Current analytical techniques assume that the concrete and steel components act independently, typically requiring full-scale load testing to more accurately predict the remaining strength or endurance of the structure. However, many of the load tests carried out on these types of bridges would be unnecessary if the degree of interaction resulting from friction at the steel-concrete interface could be adequately modeled. Experimental testing confirmed that interface friction has a negligible effect on the flexural capacity of a slab-on-girder beam however, it also showed that interface friction is significant under serviceability loading. This has led to the development of an improved analytical technique which is presented in this paper and referred to as the slab-on-girder mixed analysis service load assessment approach.
