  • In H.264 as the newest video standard, 9 modes are used in order to predict the signal values of a block composed with several pixels by intra prediction. From these process, H.264 can bring high compression ratio in the encoded signal but the use of total 9 modes can give the inefficiency of the increase of the complexity induced by the amount of operation processing or the number of searching which is applied to compare adjacent pixels. This paper proposes a simplification method of prediction mode for the intra-picture coding by considering subjective interest region. There are certain region being interested within a picture of the video sequence. This region requires better subjective picture quality than the other regions. The proposed method increases the simplification of prediction mode by providing just essential modes of total 9 modes for less interest regions compared with the interest region. It is possible to get the additional 11%$\sim$15% simplification of the prediction mode by the proposed method, compared with the conventional method which simplifies the prediction mode for all of the picture by using the prediction characteristics only.

  • In this paper, we propose a method which detects the nose and face of certain human by using the depth image. The proposed method has advantages of the low computational complexity and the high accuracy even in dark environment. Also, the detection accuracy of nose and face does not change in various postures. The proposed method first locates the locally protruding part from the depth image of the human body captured through the depth camera, and then confirms the nose through the depth characteristic of the nose and surrounding pixels. After finding the correct pixel of the nose, we determine the region of interest centered on the nose. In this case, the size of the region of interest is variable depending on the depth value of the nose. Then, face region can be found by performing binarization using the depth histogram in the region of interest. The proposed method can detect the nose and the face accurately regardless of the pose or the illumination of the captured area.

  • One of the recent and most significant technical properties can be expressed as "digital convergence," which is helping lead the technical paradigm into a ubiquitous environment. As an initial trial of realizing a ubiquitous environment, the convergence between broadcasting and telecommunication fields is now on the way, where it is required to develop a scalable video coding scheme for one-source and multi-use media. Traditional scalable video coding schemes have, however, limitations for higher stable picture quality especially on the region of interest. Therefore, this paper introduces an adaptive scanning method especially designed for a higher regional-stable picture quality under a ubiquitous video coding environment, which can improve the subjective quality of the decoded video by most-preferentially encoding, transmitting, and decoding the top-priority image information of the region of interest. Thus, the video can be more clearly visible to users. From various simulation results, the proposed scanning method in this paper can achieve an improved subjective picture quality far better than the widely used raster scan order in conventional video coding schemes, especially on the region of interest, and without a significant loss of quality in the left-over region.

  • For the patients' privacy, secure access control of medical images is essentially necessary. In this paper, two types of Region of Interest (ROI)-based selective encryption schemes are proposed, which concentrate on the security of crucial parts in medical images. The first scheme randomly inverts the most significant bits of ROI coefficients in several high frequency subbands in the transform domain, which only incurs little loss on compression efficiency. The second scheme employs a symmetric key encryption to encrypt selectively the ROI data in the final code-stream, which provides sufficient confidentiality. Both of two schemes are backward compatible so as to ensure a standard bitstream compliant decoder so the encrypted images can be reconstructed without any crash.

  • This paper presents the region of interest pattern image extraction method on a display printed matrix pattern. Proposed method can not use conventional method such as laser, ultrasonic waves and touch sensor. It searches feature point and rotation angle using luminance and pattern reliable feature points of input image, and then it extracts region of interest. In order to extract region of interest, we simulate proposed method using pattern image written various angles on display panel. The proposed method makes progress using the OpenCV and the window program, and was designed using Verilog-HDL and was verified through the FPGA Board(xc6vlx760) of Xilinx.

  • An region of interest processing technique is to handle preferentially some part of an image dynamically according to region of interest of the users in JPEG2000 image. A small image is not important, but in a big image the specified region that the user indicated has to be handled preferentially because it takes long time to display the whole image. If the user indicates a region of the outline image, the browser masks the region and sends the mask information to the source that transmitted the image. The server which got the mask information preferentially sends the code blocks matching the masks. Here, quickly generating mask information is important, so, in this paper using predefined 48 mask patterns, selecting one of the patterns according to the distribution of ROI(Region-of-Interest) and background, we remarkably reduced the time computing the mask region. Blocks that the patterns are applied are the blocks mixed of ROI and background in a block. If a whole block is an ROI or a background, these patterns are not applied. As results, comparing to the method that precisely handles ROI and background, the quality is unsatisfactory but the processing time remarkably reduced.

  • Newton-Raphson is most used algorithm in EIT(electrical impedance tomography), cross-sectional distribution of resistivity is reconstructed by mean of both generating and sensing electrodes attached onto the surface of the object. EIT has been suffered from the severe ill-posedness which is caused by the inherent low sensitivity of boundary measurements to any changes of internal resistivity values. In this paper, we propose modified cost function and weighting factor that compensate for low sensitivity between boundary measurements and internal resistivity and improve performance of Newton-Raphson for EIT in region of interest.

  • Image data processing on the region of interest (ROI) for providing the primary information is needed the view of saving search time and bandwidth over image communications related to web browsing, image database, and telemedicine, etc. Hence, the issue on extracting the region of interest is drawing a plenty of attention for the communication environment with a relatively low bandwidth such as mobile internet. In this paper, we propose a improved standard Maxshift method. The proposed algorithm compress image that includes multiple ROI using Maxshift method in Part 1 of JPEG2000. Simulation results show that proposed method increases PSNR vs. compression ratio performance above the Maxshift method.

  • In this paper, we present real-time, accurate face region detection and tracking technique for an intelligent surveillance system. It is very important to obtain the high-resolution images, which enables accurate identification of an object-of-interest. Conventional surveillance or security systems, however, usually provide poor image quality because they use one or more fixed cameras and keep recording scenes without any cine. We implemented a real-time surveillance system that tracks a moving person using four pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras. While tracking, the region-of-interest (ROI) can be obtained by using a low-pass filter and background subtraction. Color information in the ROI is updated to extract features for optimal tracking and zooming. The experiment with real human faces showed highly acceptable results in the sense of both accuracy and computational efficiency.

  • Traffic sign detection is the domain of automatic driver assistant systems. There are literatures for traffic sign detection using color information, however, color-based method contains ill-posed condition and to extract the region of interest is difficult. In our work, we propose a method for traffic sign detection using k-means clustering method, back-propagation neural network, and projection histogram features that yields the robustness for ill-posed condition. Using the color information of traffic signs enables k-means algorithm to cluster the region of interest for the detection efficiently. In each step of clustering, a cluster is verified by the neural network so that the cluster exactly represents the location of a traffic sign. Proposed method is practical, and yields robustness for the unexpected region of interest or for multiple detections.
