  • This paper intends to clear up the conte31t of the interdisciplinary nature of individual researches. First, the interdisciplinary character of individual research was analyzed. Approximately 40% of individual research projects supported by Korea Science and Engineering Foundation has the interdisciplinary nature. Second, there are close connections among research fields in individual research projects. Every research field needs the inflow of knowledge from other fields and supports other research fields as well. The interrelation among various research fields indicates the importance of the balanced development in all science and engineering fields.

  • Today interdisciplinary collaboration is an important component of clinical research. This paper focuses on how the University of Washington School of Nursing (UW-SON) Center for Women's Health and Gender Research (CWHGR) facilitated and sustained interdisciplinary research. The CWHGR funded by National Institutes of Nursing Research has been an important resource for the UW-SON since its inception in 1989. The CWHGR encourages interdisciplinary collaborative research by providing small grant funds, mentoring faculty and pre- and postdoctoral fellows, providing consultation to researchers in other disciplines, and creating a model of biobehavioral and sociocultural research collaboration that facilitates interdisciplinary research. A brief overview of the UW-SON CWHGR is provided as well as identification of barriers to interdisciplinary research.

  • Interdisciplinary, or convergence, research has been a priority for the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and many scholars in Korea have proposed interdisciplinary projects. Of the 4,930 proposals for the submitted in 2017, 2,575 (52.2%) of these proposals could be considered interdisciplinary projects. However, interdisciplinary projects had an acceptance rate of 35.0%, compared to an acceptance rate of 42.1% for single-discipline proposals. According to the study, despite the large share of research projects that appear to be interdisciplinary research, the characteristics of interdisciplinary studies was not reflected properly in the evaluation. I would suggest that it is required to prepare the criteria for classification of interdisciplinary studies in the classification system of research fields so that the characteristics of interdisciplinary research projects may be duly considered.

  • Interdisciplinary research is one of the well-known key words represent the 21st century As in the developed countries, interdisciplinary research is a pervasive phenomenon in Korea. This paper intends to clear up the interdependent structure among disciplines of university researches. First, 39.9% of individual and 59.8% of collaborative research projects of university researches are interdisciplinary. Second, the interdependency among disciplines of collaborative research is more severe than that of individual research. Third, The interdependency among disciplines indicates tile importance of the balanced development in all science and engineering fields.

  • Interdisciplinary convergence research is widely seen as a collaborative research between different disciplines, which is often driven by common agenda or problems in pursuit of a particular common objective. Thus, the purpose of interdisciplinary cooperation in convergence research is to bring each discipline's unique perspective together with the academic expertise of researchers in order to share common problems that cannot be solved effectively without research partnership. We present empirical evidence on how interdisciplinary research relationships are formed to facilitate research networking in convergence relations. In particular, we used network analysis to investigate how interdisciplinary linkages and convergence research networks has formed over time. We found that the convergence research networks were implemented by the interdisciplinary convergence research support program as intended. We did find that research field with high indegree and outdegree in a network played critical roles on the dynamics and degree of interdisciplinarity. Finally, we could find evidence that the role of liaison brokers triggered relational dynamics in interdisciplinary research collaboration.

  • The purpose of this study was to pave the way to improve the quality of historical clothing and textiles and to search for the advisable direction of future studies by examining and analyzing the interdisciplinary approach of historical clothing and textiles related articles published in The Korean Society of Costume. For this analysis, the data were included 124 historical clothing and textiles research articles published in The Korean Society of Costume from 1980 to 2001 March. The followings show the results of this study. 1. The five dominant interdisciplinary fields of historical clothing and textiles were Identified : anthropology, art history, pop music, archaeology, sociology 2. The interdisciplinary research has been actively approached in historical clothing and textiles. 3. The most frequently approached field of the interdisciplinary researches of historical clothing and textiles was art history 4. The period that has most variety interdisciplinary fields was the present age. The studies of future historical clothing and textiles should be approached in more diverse areas of interdisciplinary way and time periods.

  • Interdisciplinary research collaboration(IRC), reflected in 3,184 response of 1997 survey in Korea, is very common. IRC within same disciplines is 60%, and IRC with other disciplines is 40%. IRC with Humanities and Social Science is 11%. Policy expectations for interdisciplinary collaboration are very different depending on disciplines. The difference between disciplines and fields such as Natural Science, Life Science and Engineering is quite noticeable. Policies for interdisciplinary research collaboration are recommended to reflect the different tendencies between disciplines, at least between fields.
