Site amplification should be considered in order to estimate Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI), seismic source and attenuation parameters with a greater degree of reliability. The horizontal to vertical (H/V) ratio technique, originally proposed by Nakamura (1989), has been applied to analyze the surface waves in microtremor records. Recently, its application has been extended to the shear wave energy of strong motion in order to study the site transfer function. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the H/V spectral ratio using the observed data from 9 seismic stations distributed within the Southern Korean Peninsula, from the Odesan earthquake (2007/01/20). The results show that most of the stations have more stable amplification characteristics in a low frequency band than in a high frequency band. However, each seismic station showed its own characteristic resonant frequency and low and high frequency. The resonant frequency at each station should be estimated carefully, because the quality of seismic data is dependent on the resonant frequency. It can be obtained more reliable results of seismic source and attenuation parameters, if seismic ground motions which deconvolved from site transfer function is used. The site amplification data from this study can be used to generally classify the sites within the Southern Korean Peninsula.
A series of solid solutions of the $CaGa_1-xFexO_3-y$ system with the compositions of x=0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 has been prepared at $1150^{\circ}C$ under an atmospheric air pressure. The structure, nonstoichiometric chemical formula, and the distribution of cations for the solid solutions are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, Mohr salt titration, Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis. Their physical properties are discussed with electrical conductivity and magnetic measurements. The crystal system of all the compositions is a brownmillerite orthorhombic system from the X-ray diffraction analysis and the reduced lattice volume increases linearly with x value except that of the composition of x=0.25. All the solid solutions do not contain $Fe^{4+}$ ion and the mole number of oxygen vacancies or y value is 0.50 from Mohr salt analysis. The oxidation state of Fe ion, the coordination state, the structure change in the Brownmillerite-type structure, and the distribution of $Ga^{3+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ ions are discussed with Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis. The electrical conductivity increases and activation energy decreases, as x value increases. The traditional semiconducting property of this system is described in terms of band theory. The compositions of x=0.50∼1.00 show a thermal magnetic hysteresis in the magnetic measurement with the cooling conditions, which is discussed in terms of the space group and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction.

This article is a part of a research on the elementary science curriculum development to enhance creative problem-solving abilities. The components of the curriculum have been identified as 'scientific knowledge', 'process skills' & 'divergent/critical thinking'. Among these components, construction of the scientific knowledge that enables creative problem-solving abilities has been selected as an intensive research topic for the purpose of the present research. To avoid or to prevent the knowledge learned from separate facts and concepts, five themes have been selected so as to incorporate with all three areas of the elementary science curriculum, i.e., physical science, earth science and life science. The five themes are, 'structure', 'change', 'interaction', 'energy' and 'stability'. The contents of elementary science, which have been selected from the 3rd, 6th and 7th National Elementary Science curriculum, were reconstructed based on the five themes given above. The results of reconstruction are presented in the form of matrix, such that the vertical axis represents how the concepts are related within each domain of science, while the horizontal axis shows how the concepts are interconnected between domains of science. Therefore, based upon the five themes, individual or separate knowledge can be put into more unified knowledge so that contribution of knowledge transfer to new ones can be expected for leaners who will be creative in problem-solving. The process and products of the curriculum development as well as the background of the present research are described and discussed in detail.
The effects of pH and temperature on the removal of two dyes (neutral red; NR and malachite green oxalates; MG) from aqueous effluents using Maghnia montmorillonite clay in a batch adsorption process were investigated. The results showed the stability of the optical properties of MG in aqueous solution and adsorbed onto clay under wide range of pH 3-9. However, the interaction of NR dye with clay is accompanied by a red shift of the main absorption bands of monomer cations under pH range of 3-5, whereas, those of neutral form remains nearly constant over the pH range of 8-12. The optimal pH for favorable adsorption of the dyes, i.e. ${\geq}$90% has been achieved in aqueous solutions at 6 and 7 for NR and VM respectively. The most suitable adsorption temperatures were 298 and 318 K with maximum adsorption capacities of 465.13mg/g for NR and 459.89 mg/g for MG. The adsorption equilibrium results for both dyes follow Langmuir, Freundlich isotherms. The numerical values of the mean free energy $E_a$ of 4.472-5.559 kj/mol and 2.000-2.886 kj/mol for NR and MG respectively indicated physical adsorption. Various thermodynamic parameters, such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ and Ea have been calculated. The data showed that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. The sticking probability model was further used to assess the potential feasibility of the clay mineral as an alternative adsorbent for organic ion pollutants in aqueous solution.
The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model - combining the flow module of Delft3D with the WAVE solver of XBeach - of nearshore hydro- and morphodynamics that can simulate flow, sediment transport, and morphological evolution. Surf-swash zone hydrodynamics were modeled using the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, combined with various turbulence models (${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, ${\kappa}-L$, ATM and H-LES). Sediment transport and resulting foreshore profile changes were approximated using different sediment transport relations that consider both bed- and suspended-load transport of non-cohesive sediments. The numerical set-up was tested against field data, with good agreement found. Different numerical experiments under a range of bed characteristics and incident wave and tidal conditions were run to test the model's capability to reproduce 3D flow, wave propagation, sediment transport and morphodynamics in the nearshore at the field scale. The results were interpreted according to existing understanding of surf and swash zone processes. Our numerical experiments confirm that the angle between the crest line of the approaching wave and the shoreline defines the direction and strength of the longshore current, while the longshore current velocity varies across the nearshore zone. The model simulates the undertow, hydraulic cell and rip-current patterns generated by radiation stresses and longshore variability in wave heights. Numerical results show that a non-uniform seabed is crucial for generation of rip currents in the nearshore (when bed slope is uniform, rips are not generated). Increasing the wave height increases the peaks of eddy viscosity and TKE (turbulent kinetic energy), while increasing the tidal amplitude reduces these peaks. Wave and tide interaction has most striking effects on the foreshore profile with the formation of the intertidal bar. High values of eddy viscosity, TKE and wave set-up are spread offshore for coarser grain sizes. Beach profile steepness modifies the nearshore circulation pattern, significantly enhancing the vertical component of the flow. The local recirculation within the longshore current in the inshore region causes a transient offshore shift and strengthening of the longshore current. Overall, the analysis shows that, with reasonable hypotheses, it is possible to simulate the nearshore hydrodynamics subjected to oceanic forcing, consistent with existing understanding of this area. Part II of this work presents 3D nearshore morphodynamics induced by the tides and waves.
The potential energy of adsorbate molecules in the main channel of $K^+$ ion exchanged zeolite L(K-L) was calculated. In K-L which adsorbs three molecules per unit cell, the interaction energies of $H_2O,\;NH_3,\;CH_3NH_2,\;(CH_3)_2NH,\;and\;(CH_3)_3N$ molecules with zeolite lattice are 61.11, 62.31, 65.68, 74.65, and 79.88kJ/mol, respectively. These values are less by 3.7∼12.6kJ/mol than $K^+$ ion affinities with adsorbing molecules. These results may be due to the facts that the electrostatic energies are reduced by the negative charge of the lattice oxygens. The distribution of adsorption sites of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ in K-L was investigated by a technique of temperature programmed desorption. The experimental value of desorption energies of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ on K-L are in good agreement with the theoritical values. It is concluded that the desorption of $NH_3$ and $CH_3NH_2$ on K-L is the first-order desorption with free readsorption.
The purpose of this study is to find the meaning of the good class, and based on this, situation of environmental education in high school is researched. Through those above processes, desirable direction of the environment class is suggested. For this study, we are trying to reflect the characteristics of environmental education on the general good classes, and from this, the meaning of good environment class is known. Moreover, for this study, we choose environment classes from four high schools leading by environment major teacher. From those four classes, we analyzed these things: educational situation of environment class, teachers' interviews. All of these are for analyzing environment class with the view of good environmental class. A well-formed environment class manifests the features of environment education in all aspects of teaching and learning process, including learning objectives, learning materials, procedures, and evaluations. Furthermore, it should be 'student-centered' class in which active interaction among the learners or between the instructor and the students is considered most important. Students are not the passive receiver, but rather, they actively participate in the learning process by reorganizing the knowledge as they experience and become independent learners who are actively involved in the problem-solving process. In this way, we can generate a great deal of students' interest and motivation, which in turn makes the class interesting, enjoyable, full of energy and still effective. If there is the class reflecting the factors of environmental education above good class' ways, it will be the good environment class. In the current situation of environment class, the rate of student's class participation and study activity was low. This tendency is not too different between four groups except students' support to teachers. This result means that learners' will to participate in their classes actively is not high. Moreover, about 46.3% of students did not understand some parts of new knowledge and about the parts, students' solution was 'does nothing' and the rate was also so high. Teachers tried to make their class with considering students' interest, and focusing their learner's real life. However, learners are all general education high school students, so teachers have aversion about making their students heavy activities.

Present work shows a numerical method to analysis of interaction analysis between solitary wave and onshore bridge. Numerical simulation is carried out by TWOPM-3D (three-dimensional one-field model for immiscible two-phase flows), which is based on Navier-Stokes solver. To do this, the solitary wave is generated numerically in numerical wave channel, and numerical results and experimental results were compared and analyzed in order to verify the applicability of force acting on an onshore bridge. From this, we discussed precisely the characteristics of horizontal and vertical forces (uplift and downward forces) changes including water level and velocity changes due to the variation of solitary wave height, water depth, onshore bridge's location and type, and number of girder. Furthermore, It is revealed that the maximum horizontal and vertical forces acting on the girder bridge show different varying properties according to the number of girder, although each maximum force acting on the girder bridge is proportional to the increasement of incident solitary wave height, and the entrained air in the fluid flow affects the vertical force highly.

The purpose of this study is to investigated the mechanism of pharmacological action of local anesthetic and provide the basic information about the development of new effective local anesthetics. Fluorescent probe techniques were used to evaluate the effect of lidocaine HCl on the physical properties (transbilayer asymmetric lateral and rotational mobility, annular lipid fluidity and protein distribution) of synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles (SPMV) isolated from bovine cerebral cortex, and liposomes of total lipids (SPMVTL) and phospholipids (SPMVPL) extracted from the SPMV. An experimental procedure was used based on selective quenching of 1,3-di(1-pyrenyl)propane (Py-3-Py) and 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) by trinitrophenyl groups, and radiationless energy transfer from the tryptophans of membrane proteins to Py-3-Py. Lidocaine HCl increased the bulk lateral and rotational mobility of neuronal and model membrane lipid bilayes, and had a greater fluidizing effect on the inner monolayer than the outer monolayer. Lidocaine HCl increased annular lipid fluidity in SPMV lipid bilayers. It also caused membrane proteins to cluster. The most important finding of this study is that there is far greater increase in annular lipid fluidity than that in lateral and rotational mobilities by lidocaine HCl. Lidocaine HCl alters the stereo or dynamics of the proteins in the lipid bilayers by combining with lipids, especially with the annular lipids. In conclusion, the present data suggest that lidocaine, in addition to its direct interaction with proteins, concurrently interacts with membrane lipids, fluidizing the membrane, and thus inducing conformational changes of proteins known to be intimately associated with membrane lipid.

Large area matrix-addressed image detectors are a recent technology for x-ray imaging with medical diagnostic and other applications. The imaging properties of x-ray pixel detectors depend on the quantum efficiency of x-rays, the generated signal of each x-ray photon and the distribution of the generated signal between pixels. In a phosphor coated detector the light signal is generated by electrons captured in the phosphor screen. In our study we simulated the lateral spread distributions for phosphor coupled detector by Monte Carlo simulations. Most simulations of such detectors simplify the setup by only taking the conversion layer into account neglecting behind. The Monte Carlo code MCNPX has been used to simulate the complete interaction and subsequent charge transport of x-ray radiation. This has allowed the analysis of charge sharing between pixel elements as an important limited factor of digital x-ray imaging system. The parameters are determined by lateral distribution of x-ray photons and x-ray induced electrons. The primary purpose of this study was to develop a design tool for the evaluation of geometry factor in the phosphor coupled optical imaging detector. In order to evaluate the spatial resolution for different phosphor material, phosphor geometry we have developed a simulation code. The developed code calculates the energy absorption and spatial distribution based on both the signal from the scintillating layer and the signal from direct detection of x-ray in the detector. We show that internal scattering contributes to the so-called spatial resolution drop of the image detector. Results from the simulation of spatial distribution in a phosphor pixel detector are presented. The spatial resolution can be increased by optimizing pixel size and phosphor thickness.
