압력 센서 개발 및 내연기관의 피스톤 링 사이 가스압력 측정 (Development of Pressure Transducer and Measurement of Inter-Ring Gas Pressure in Internal Combustion Engine)

  • The gas pressure acting on the rings in internal combustion engine influences the friction, wear and HC emission. In order to understand their characteristics, it is necessary to measure the interring gas pressure during engine operations. In this study, miniature type pressure transducer was developed to measure inter-ring gas pressure. And measurements of cylinder and inter-ring gas pressure were made on a gasoline engine running at full and part load conditions. Finally the characteristics of inter-ring gas pressure variation during engine operation were obtained form analysis of measured date.

  • The gas pressure acting on the rings in internal combustion engine influences the friction and wear characteristics. Inter-ring pressure variation during engine operation results from cylinder gas flow through a piston-ring pack. The flow passages consist of ring end gaps and clearances between the ring and the piston groove. The gas flow in the clearance between the ring and the groove is directly affected by the axial motion of the ring in the groove. In this paper the asperity contact force is newly considered in the prediction of the clearence between the ring and the groove surface. This term must be taken into account physically in case that the clearance get narrow rather than asperity height between the ring and the groove surface. Finally, comparisons of calculated inter-ring gas pressures based on the analytical method are made with the measured ones. The agereement was found to be good below midium engine speed, 3000rpm. In order to obtain accurate analytical results to the extend of high rpm range, it is recommended to include oil ring motion as well as top and second ring in analytical model.

박폭 저장력 피스톤 링 팩에 대한 마찰저감 연구 (A Study on Friction Reduction Related with the Piston Ring Pack with Thinner Width Ring and Lower Tension Ring)

  • To satisfy the more severe emission regulation and the demand of higher fuel economy in near future, the combustion pressure and power output of engines is going to be higher. In order to get the reduction of engine emission and the higher power, it is needed the reduction of the tension and width of ring pack. The lower tension ring and the manufacturing technology of cast iron thinner width ring can bring the friction reduction between the ring and liner during engine running. Therfore, the fuel economy can be achieved. Thereafter the engine emission can be reduced. In this study, by using a developed basic computer program that predicts the inter-ring pressure, the motion of ring and the inter-ring pressure through a crevice volume model between adjacent rings, and the oil film thickness and the friction computed by lubrication theories, it is to be examined the effect of friction reduction from piston ring pack equipped with thinner width ring and lower tension ring.

Investigation of Inter Fiber Cohesion in Yarns. I. Influence of Certain Spinning Parameters on the Cohesion in Cotton Yarns

  • This paper investigates the influence of raw material and process parameters in spinning that affect the inter fiber cohesion in yams. An instrument has been developed for measuring the minimum twist of cohesion. With regard to the raw material parameters, the influence of different cotton fiber mixings for a given count of yarn is investigated. Also the effect of spinning to varying counts for a given cotton variety is studied. With regard to the process parameters, studies have been carried out to investigate the influence of noil extraction in comber, number of draw frame passages, draft pressure in ring frame and direction of twist. Cohesion improved with increase in the noil extraction percentage in the comber. Increase in the number of draw frame passages also improved the cohesion. Draft pressure in ring frame improved the fiber cohesion in yarn up to a pressure of $2.1kg/cm^2$. Direction of twist had no effect on the cohesion.

피스톤-링 팩에 관한 기초 연구 (A Basic Study on Piston-Ring Pack)

  • A piston assembly is very important because it directly receives the energy generated during combustion process. Surely, the friction and lubrication of piston-ring pack do an important role in the performance and fuel economy of an engine. In fact, the friction loss in piston-ring pack is the biggest portion to the whole engine friction. Therefore, the improvement of lubrication quality and friction loss in piston-ring pack will be directly related with the improvement in the performance and fuel economy of an engine. Meanwhile, the oil consumption and blow-by gas through piston-cylinder-ring crevices have to be controlled as less as possible. In these two aspects, the study on the optimized design of piston-ring pack has to be carried out. In this study, for the efficient design of piston-ring pack, it is focused to develop a basic computer program that predicts the inter-ring pressure, the motion of ring and the blow-by gas through a crevice volume model between adjacent rings, and the oil film thickness and the friction computed by lubrication theories.

75톤급 터보펌프 추진제 혼합 방지 실의 성능 시험 (Inter Propellant Seal Performance test for 75 ton Class Turbopump)

  • 75톤급 터보펌프용 추진제 혼합 방지 실의 누설 성능 및 내구 성능을 평가하기 위한 수류환경 성능 시험을 수행하였다. 추진제 혼합 방지 실 시제품은 연료펌프 부와 산화제펌프 부 각각 누적 시험시간 2,100초 동안 수류환경에서 내구 성능 시험이 이루어 졌다. 1단의 카본 플로팅 링 실로 구성된 연료펌프 부는 성능 시험 동안 평균 실 차압 9.4 bar에서 평균 누설 유량 13.7 gram/sec의 결과를 얻었다. 반면, 2단의 카본 플로팅 링 실로 구성된 산화제펌프 부는 성능 시험 동안 평균 실 차압 9.5 bar에서 평균 누설 유량 7.3 gram/sec의 결과를 얻었다. 내구 성능 시험 후, 추진제 혼합 방지 실은 양호한 상태를 보였다. 향후 액체 질소를 시험 매질로 하는 극저온 환경에서 추진제 혼합 방지실 누설 성능 시험이 수행될 예정이다.

피스톤-링 및 실린더 보아 마모를 고려한 엔진오일소모 연구 (A Study on Engine Oil Consumption Considering Wear of Piston-Ring and Cylinder Bore)

  • Ring and cylinder bore wear may not be a problem in most current automotive engines. However, a small change in ring face and cylinder bore diameter can significantly affect the lubrication characteristics and ring axial motion. This in turn can cause to change inter-ring pressure, blow-by and oil consumption in an engine. Therefore, by predicting the wear of piston ring face and cylinder bore altogether, the changed ring end gap and the changed volume of gas reservoir can be calculated. Then the excessive oil consumption can be predicted. Here, the oil amount through top ring gap into combustion chamber is estimated as engine oil consumption. Furthermore, the wear theories of ring and cylinder bore are included. The changed oil consumption caused by the new end gap and the new volume of oil reservoir around second land, can be calculated at some engine running interval. Meanwhile, the wear amount and oil consumption occurred during engine durability cycle are compared with the calculated values. The wear data of rings and cylinder bore are obtained from three engines after engine durability test. The calculated wear data of each part are turn out to be around the band of averaged test values or a little below. It is shown that the important factor regarding oil consumption increasement is the wear of ring face.

  • To perform a cryogenic development test for Tribo-elements in a turbopump, a cryogenic bearing and seal test facility (BSTF) is designed and currently under construction in KARI. The working fluid is liquid nitrogen operating at a temperature $-197^{\circ}C$. The maximum operating pressure and volume flow rate of BSTF are 100 bar and 10 liters per second, respectively. The development tests of floating ring seals, inter-propellant seals (IPS) and cryogenic ball bearings in a turbopump will be performed using the BSTF. This paper briefly described design requirements and procedures of BSTF.
