  • Atomization characteristics and spatial distribution of the spray emanating from an injector of liquid-propellant thruster are investigated by using dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray characteristic parameters such as the mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), and velocity fluctuation are measured at various locations along the spray axis as well as on the radial direction. Those data are quantified in radial profile and also used to scrutinize the correlation between diameter and turbulence intensity of spray droplets. For the better visual grasp, dynamic behavior of spray droplets along the spray stream is presented through the velocity vectors projected on the plane of geometric axis of nozzle orifice and radial coordinate.

  • For $P_B=50,\;{\Delta}T=10K$, Ar=5, Pr=2.36, Le=0.015, Pe=1.26, Cv=1.11, the intensity of solutal convection (solutal Grashof number $Grs=3.44x10^4$) is greater than that of thermal convection (thermal Grashof number $Grt=1.81x10^3$) by one order of magnitude, which is based on the solutally buoyancy-driven convection due to the disparity in the molecular weights of the component A($Hg_2Cl_2$) and B(He). With increasing the partial pressure of component B from 10 up to 200 Torr, the rate is decreased exponentially. The convective transport decreases with lower g level and is changed to the diffusive mode at 0.1 $g_0$. In other words, for regions in which the g level is 0.1 $g_0$ or less, the diffusion-driven convection results in a parabolic velocity profile and a recirculating cell is not likely to occur. Therefore a gravitational acceleration level of less than 0.1 $g_0$ can be adequate to ensure purely diffusive transport.

  • Mechanical component has striation with constant width and SEM can estimate fracture type and loading condition. SEM has benefit to fatigue fracture analysis but striation can be observed according to the kind of material and range of crack growth rate and can't. In this case, it needs AFM that can measure 3-dimensional surface profile with resolution of atomic size. In this study. to find fracture reason of torsion-mounted blade in nuclear plant, we estimate the relation between stress intensity factor range and root mean square roughness in 12% Cr steel by AFM and predict in-service loading condition of turbine blade. failure analysis is performed by finite element method and Goodman diagram on torsion-mounted blade.

  • In the present study, characteristics of steady state laminar flows of a straight duct connected to a 180$^{\circ}$ curved duct were examined in the entrance region through experimental and numerical analyses. For the analysis, the governing equations of laminar flows in the Cartesian coordinate system were applied. Flow characteristics such as velocity profiles, and secondary flows were investigated numerically and experimentally in a square cross-sectional straight duct by the PIV system and a CFD code(STAR CD). For the PIV measurement, working fluid produced from mosquito coils smoke. The experimental data were obtained at 9 points dividing the test sections by 400 mm. Experimental and numerical results can be summarized as follows. Critical Reynolds number, Recr which indicates transition from laminar steady flow to transition steady flow was 2,150. As Reynolds number, Re, was increased, dimensionless velocity profiles at the outer wall were increased due to the effect of the centrifugal force and the secondary flows. The intensity of a secondary flow became stronger at the inner wall rather than the outer wall regardless of Reynolds number.

  • An experiment on the enhancement of turbulent flow with ultrasonic forcing was carried out by using PIV measurement in a coaxial circular pipe which could offer characteristics of the turbulence flow plentifully through its jet. A large transparent acryl tank and a coaxial circular pipe nozzle were made for the above research. city water of $25^{\circ}C$ was selected as an experimental liquid and the front flow field of the coaxial circular pipe was divided vertically as 3 measuring regions to observe characteristics of flow phenomena. characteristics of fluid flow such as velocity vector distribution, kinetic energy, turbulent intensity and etc. were visualized, observed, examined and considered at 5 kinds of Re No. such as $Re=1{\times}10^3,\;2{\times}10^3,\;3{\times}10^3,\;5{\times}10^3,\;1{\times}10^4$. In result it was proved that ultrasonic vibration affected the enhancement of turbulent flow.

  • Analytical experiments to determine the line-of-sight temperature distribution is conducted by using spectral radiation intensities. For this study, fourteen narrow bands of $25cm^{-1}$ interval in $CO_2\;4.3{\mu}m$ band ($2,050cm^{-1}$ to $2375cm^{-1}$) are selected. The applied system is a one-dimensional gas slab filled with 100% $CO_2$ gas at 1 atm. Two types of temperature profile are tested; parabolic and boundary layer types. Three kinds of radiation calculation are used in the iteration procedure for the temperature inversion; LBL(Line by Line), SNB(Statistical Narrow Band) and WNB(WSGGM. based Narrow Band) models. The LBL solution shows perfect agreement while some error of temperature prediction is caused by radiation modeling error when using SNB and WNB models. The inversion result shows that the WNB model may be used more accurately in spectral remote sensing techniques than the traditional SNB model.

  • This paper presents statistical analysis results of wind speed and atmospheric turbulence data measured from more than 30 anemometers installed at 15 different height levels on 325 m high Beijing Meteorological Tower and is primarily intended to provide useful information on boundary layer wind characteristics for wind-resistant design of tall buildings and high-rise structures. Profiles of mean wind speed are presented based on the field measurements and are compared with empirical models' predictions. Relevant parameters of atmospheric boundary layer at urban terrain are determined from the measured wind speed profiles. Furthermore, wind velocity data in longitudinal, lateral and vertical directions, which were recorded from an ultrasonic anemometer during windstorms, are analyzed and discussed. Atmospheric turbulence information such as turbulence intensity, gust factor, turbulence integral length scale and power spectral densities of the three-dimensional fluctuating wind velocity are presented and used to evaluate the adequacy of existing theoretical and empirical models. The objective of this study is to investigate the profiles of mean wind speed and atmospheric turbulence characteristics over a typical urban area.

  • This study examines the accuracy of large-eddy simulation (LES) to simulate the flow around a large irregular sloping complex terrain. Typically, real built up environments are surrounded by complex terrain geometries with many features. The complex terrain surrounding The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology campus was modelled and the flow over an uphill slope was simulated. The simulated results, including mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities, were compared with the flow characteristics measured in a wind tunnel model test. Given the size of the domain and the corresponding constraints on the resolution of the simulation, the mean velocity components within the boundary layer flow, especially in the stream-wise direction were found to be reasonably well replicated by the LES. The turbulence intensity values were found to differ from the wind tunnel results in the building recirculation zones, mostly due to the constraints placed on spatial and temporal resolutions. Based on the validated mean velocity profile results, the flow-structure interactions around these buildings and the surrounding terrain were examined.

  • For reduction of $CO_2$ emission emitted from combustion engine, the developed nations have been focused on R&D of hybrid electric vehicle. Further more, many automobile companies are researching on various techniques related to engine used in HEV to enhance fuel economy. One of key techniques is miller cycle that control a valve timing to reduce compression stroke for saving energy and increase expansion stroke for high power. In this study, it was investigated the in-cylinder flow characteristics of miller cycle with variable intake valve timing by using the ANSYS simulation code. For simulation, the key analytic parameter defined as intake valve closing timing and cam profile. As main results, it was shown that LIVC cause a lower pressure inside cylinder and had better control turbulence intensity.

  • Electrorheological(ER) fluid is a kind of smart material with variable shear stress and dynamic viscosity under various electric field intensity. Electric field can control the damping characteristics of ER damper. The objective of this study is the analysis of the performance of ER damper and its application to shock absorber. Idealized nonlinear Bingham plastic shear flow model is used to predict the velocity profile between electrodes. Cylindrical dashpot ER damper with moving electrode is constructed and tested under various electric fields. The analytic and experimental results for damping force are compared and discussed. Drop test system using ER damper is prepared to identify transient vibration characteristics. The rebound is eased as the applied electric field increases. When semi-active control algorithm is applied, rebound phenomenon disappears and vibration energy level decays faster than the case of zero electric field.
