Light intensity controlled wrinkling patterns in photo-thermal sensitive hydrogels

  • Undergoing large volumetric changes upon incremental environmental stimulation, hydrogels are interesting materials which hold immense potentials for utilization in a wide array of applications in diverse industries. Owing to the large magnitudes of deformation it undergoes, swelling induced instability is a commonly observed sight in all types of gels. In this work, we investigate the instability of photo-thermal sensitive hydrogels, produced by impregnating light absorbing nano-particles into the polymer network of a temperature sensitive hydrogel, such as PNIPAM. Earlier works have shown that by using lights of different intensities, these hydrogels follow different swelling trends. We investigate the possibility of utilizing this fact for remote switching applications. The analysis is built on a thermodynamic framework of inhomogeneous large deformation of hydrogels and implemented via commercial finite element software, ABAQUS. Various examples of swelling induced instabilities, and its corresponding dependence on light intensity, will be investigated. We show that the instabilities that arise have their morphologies dependent on the light intensity.

The Effect of Cerium Reduction on Light Emission in Cerium-containing 20Y2O3-25Al2O3-55SiO2 Glass

  • The effect of cerium concentration and the addition of $Sb_2O_3$ on the light emission of cerium-contained glass were investigated. The glass matrix composition was $20Y_2O_3-25Al_2O_3-55SiO_2$, the $CeO_2$ concentration ranged from 0.05 to 0.5 mol%, and $Sb_2O_3$ was added at concentrations of 0.02 to 0.1 mol%. The $Ce^{3+}$ and $Ce^{4+}$ absorption bands were observed at approximately 330 nm and 240 nm, respectively. A broad emission band at 400 nm, due to the 4f-5d transition of the $Ce^{3+}$ ion, was observed under illumination by a UV light at 330 nm. The photoluminescence intensity of $Ce^{3+}$ had a maximum value at a $CeO_2$ concentration of 0.1 mol%. Adding $Sb_2O_3$ decreased the $Ce^{4+}$ absorption intensity and enhanced the light emission intensity of $Ce^{3+}$ by about 45%.

  • 장거리 $3{\times}40$ Gbps 강도 변조 직접 검파 방식의 파장 분할 다중 시스템에서 색 분산과 자기 위상 변조에 의한 광 펄스 왜곡을 최상으로 보상할 수 있는 최적의 펌프 전력을 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 통해 살펴보았다. 본 논문에서 고찰한 파장 분할 다중 시스템은 전체 전송로 중간에 HNL-DSF (highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber)의 광 위상 공액기를 두어 광 신호 왜곡을 보상하는 경로 평균 강도 근사 (PAIA : Path-Averaged Intensity Approximation) 기법의 MSSI (Mid-Span Spectral Inversion)가 적용된 시스템이다. 우선 HNL-DSF는 광대역 파장 분할 다중 전송에서 매우 유용한 비선형 매질이라는 것을 확인할 수 있었고, 두 번째 광 전송로로 입사되는 공액파의 전력을 입력 광 신호의 전력과 같아지게 하는 HNL-DSF 광 위상 공액기의 펌프 전력에서 최상의 보상이 얻어지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 결과적으로 PAIA MSSI 기법에 전송 거리에 관계한 최적 펌프 전력을 갖는 HNL-DSF 광 위상 공액기를 적용하면 장거리 대용량 파장 분할 다중 시스템의 구현이 가능하다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

적색광을 이용한 국화의 개화조절 (Flowering Control by Using Red Light of Chrysanthemum)

  • 적색광을 이용한 국화의 일장연장 처리기술을 개발하기 위하여 국화의 개화억제를 위한 적색광 강도를 구명하고 생육에 대한 영향을 검토하였다. 국화는 적색광에 의한 파야처리로 개화가 억제되었고 연속된 초적색광 처리로 개화하여 개화의 광가역적 반응을 나타냈다. 인공광 생육실 환경하에서 적색광 $1.4{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ (PAR) 로 일장연장 처리시 국화의 개화가 완전히 억제되었다. 적색광 $1.4{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ 처리는 관행의 전구식형광등 50 Lux 처리와 같이 국화의 개화를 억제시켰다. 적색 LED를 이용한 일장연장 처리로 관행의 전구식형광등 처리보다 국화의 초장은 17 %, 엽면적은 48 % 유의하게 증가하였고 엽수와 생체중은 각각 11 %, 36 % 증가하는 경향이었다.

Optimal Signal Amplitude of Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Systems in Dimmable Visible Light Communications

  • Visible light communications (VLC) using the intensity modulation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) provides a new communication medium to overcome the shortage of radio spectrum, and allows reuse of LED lighting infrastructures. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) was introduced to VLC for its merits in mitigating the fading effects resulting from delay spread, and in avoiding low-frequency ambient interference. Noise and clipping are two major factors that degrade the performance of OFDM in VLC. A larger signal easily overcomes noise, but experiences impairment by clipping. Therefore, degradation due to clipping has a trade-off relationship with that due to noise, depending on the signal amplitude of OFDM. In this paper, the optimal signal amplitude in the trade-off is obtained by simulation when the dimming and LED intensity are given. The former indicates a user's requirement for lighting, and the latter represents the channel quality. The required LED intensity-to-noise ratio, as the channel quality that guarantees dimming as well as an adequate bit-error rate (BER), is also discussed.

Effect of Light Receiving rate on Growth and Quality of Ginseng Cultivated in Plastic House

  • Ginseng is a shade-plant cultivated using shading facilities. However, at too low light levels, root growth is poor, and at high light levels, the destruction of chlorophyll reduces the photosynthesis efficiency due to leaf burn and early fall leaves. The ginseng has a lightsaturation point of 12,000~15,000 lux when grown at 15 to 20℃ and 9,500 lux at 25℃. This study was conducted to select the optimal light intensity of 3-year-old ginseng grown in blue-white film plastic house. The seeds were planted in the blue-white film plastic house with different light receiving rate (March 17, 2020). Between April and September, the average air temperature in the house was 20.4-20.7℃. Average soil temperature was 18.3℃-18.5℃. The chemical properties of the test soil was as follows. The pH level was 7.0-7.4, EC was 0.5-0.6 dS/m, OM was at the levels of 33.6-37.7 g/kg, P2O5 was 513.0-590.8 mg/kg, slightly higher than the allowable 400 mg/kg. The amount of light intensity, illuminance, and solar radiation in the blue-white film house was increased as the light-receiving rate increased and the amount of light intensity was found to be 9-14% compared to the open field, 8-13% illuminance and 9-14% solar irradiation respectively. The photosynthesis rate was the lowest at 3.1 µmolCO2/m2/s in the 9% light blue-white plastic house and 4.2 and 4.0 µmolCO2/m2/s in the 12% and 14% light blue-white plastic house, respectively. These results generally indicate that the photosynthesis of plants increases with the amount of light, but the ginseng has a lower light saturation point at high temperatures, and the higher the amount of light, the lower the photosynthetic efficiency. The SPAD (chlorophyll content) value decreased as the increase of light-receiving rate, and was the highest at 32.7 in 9% light blue-white plastic house. Ginseng germination started on April 11 and took 13-15 days to germinate. The overall germination rate was 82.9-85.8%. The plant height and length of stem were long in the 9% light-receiving plastic house. The diameter of stem was thick in the 12-14% light-receiving plastic house. In the 12% and 14% light-receiving plastic house, the length and diameter of taproot was long and thick, so the fresh weight of root per plant was 20 g or more, which was heavier than 16.9 g of the 9% light-receiving plastic house. The disease incidence (Alternaria blight, Gray mold and Damping-off etc.) rate were 0.9-2.7%. The incidence of Sclerotinia rot disease was 7.5-8.4%, and root rot was 0-20.0%. The incidence ratio of rusty root ginseng was 34.4-38.7% level, which was an increase from the previous year's 15% level.

비접촉식 자외선 반응조에서 자외선 강도 분포의 광학적 특성 (Optical characteristics of the UV intensity distribution in a non-contact type UV photoreactor)

  • The concept of a non-contact type of UV disinfection system was introduced in this study. UV lamps and their quartz sleeves hang over the water surface and there is no interface between the sleeve and water. Obviously, there is no fouling. Based on optical laws and other UV distribution models, a detail mathematical model for a non-contact type UV disinfection system was developed in this study. Pathway length of UV light in a non-contact type photoreactor is longer than that in a submerged type photoreactor because the light is more refractive while passing through 3 interfaces of medium. But the pathway length passing through the water media is not significantly longer than that in a submerged type photoreactor so, the absorption of UV light by water is not significantly different from the other system. Due to the reflection effect, UV intensity is rapidly decreased as the horizontal distance from the light source is increased. The reflective attenuation in a non-contact type photoreactor is higher than that in a submerged type photoreactor. These mean that the short photoreactor is advantageous than the narrow-long photoreactor for the non-contact type photoreactor in an optical point of view.

  • V711 Tau의 채층활동을 조사하기 위하여 자외선 영역의 Mg II 방출선의 세기와 광도 변화의 상관 관계를 유추하였다. 첫째, 가시광선 영역의 광도곡선의 형태와 자외선 영역의 광도곡선의 형태를 비교하고, 둘째, IUE 고분산 스펙트럼에서 Mg II 방출선의 세기를 위상별로 측정하고 방출선 부근의 연속선을 이용하여 자외선 광도곡선을 완성하였다. 방출선의 세기와 광도곡선을 비교한 결과 방출선이 강하게 나타나는 위상, $0.^{p}4$에서는 광도가 어둡게 나타나 최소가 되고, 방출선의 세기가 약할 때는 광도가 밝아져서 최대가 되었다. 이는 자기장이 강한 위상에서는 채층활동과 흑점의 크기가 증가하고 반대로 자기장이 약한 위상에서는 채층활동과 흑점의 크기가 작다는 것을 뜻한다. 그러므로 자기장, 채층활동, 별 표면의 흑점과의 상관 관계가 밝혀지고, V711 Tau의 변광은 표면의 채층활동과 흑점에 의한 것이다.

  • 레진 수복에서 초기에 저광도로 중합하여 레진의 유동성을 허용함으로써 중합시 내부응력을 상쇄하며, 다시 고광도로 중합하여 레진의 물성도 유지할 수 있는 방법이 시도되고 있어 초기 저광도 중합이 상아질과의 결합 강도와 레진의 미세경도에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 소의 건전한 하악 전치 20개를 3개의 절편으로 절단하여 각 군에 배분하고 상아질면에 레진을 충전한 후, I군은 $450mW/cm^2$의 광도도 40초간, II군은 $300mW/cm^2$$600mW/cm^2$의 광도로 각각 20초씩 III군은 $250mW/cm^2$$450mW/cm^2$에서 각각 20초씩 광중합하여 전단 결합 강도를 측정하였고, 직경 5.0mm깊이 2.0mm레진 시편을 제작하여 상, 하면 중앙에서 Vickers 미세 경도를 측정하였다. 전단결합 강도는 초기 저광도 중합군의 평균이 다소 높았으나 각 군간 통계학적 유의한 차이는 없었으며, 미세 경도는 상하면 모두에서 각 군간 통계학적으로 유의한 차이는 보이지 않았다.

광삼각법을 이용한 레이저 변위 센서의 특성 연구 (Characteristics of the Laser Displacement Sensor Using Optical Triangulation Method)

  • Recently, a laser displacement sensor is widely used for the manufacturing automation. The sensor is generally composed of a diode laser and a light receiving device. The diode laser emits a laser beam and the receiving device detects the light reflected from the measured object. The object position is obtained based upon triangulation method. As a light receiving device, a PSD is usually utilized since its structure is very simple and rugged and has a high accuracy. Although the theoretical relationship for this sensor had been developed, the characteristics of the sensor have not been much experimentally studied. In this paper, several experimental results will presented. The measurement accuracy is affected by the surface conditions such as the reflectance characteristics, the angle of the object's surface and the laser intensity. In addition, it is found that the PSD and the signal processing circuit have nonlinearities and showed that those nonlinearities can be reduced by controlling the emitting laser intensity.
