  • Background: Parthenium hysterophorus is a noxious invasive weed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including Nepal. Among 11 species of biological control agents released to control P. hysterophorus in Ausrtalia, winter rust Puccina abrupta var. partheniicola arrived fortuitously and has established in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, nearly a decade back. However, the prevalence and effectiveness of this rust as a biological control agent in Kathmandu remain unknown. To address this knowledge gap, a roadside survey was done at an interval of 2 ± 0.25 km in Kathmandu Valley to assess the P. abrupta var. partheniicola incidence and its impacts on P. hysterophorus. Infested individuals of P. hysterophorus were further divided into four severity classes (very low, low, medium, and high), and rust incidence was calculated. The impact of the winter rust on the growth of P. hysterophorus was assessed by comparing biomass and seed output of infested and non-infested individuals. Results: Among 81 locations where P. hysterophorus was present in the Kathmandu Valley, winter rust infestation was observed at 98% locations. At some locations within Kathmandu Valley such as Tinkune, Kirtipur, Chabahil, Buddha Chowk, and Dhobighat, the impacts of the rust on P. hysterophorus were medium to high. Aboveground biomass and seed output of P. hysterophorus were reduced by 47% and 73%, respectively, due to winter rust infestation. The study indicates that winter rust incidence is widespread in Kathmandu Valley with very low to high levels of damages to P. hysterophorus depending on the localities. Conclusion: The rust has, therefore, a potential to reduce the growth performance of P. hysterophorus, and it can be used as a component of integrated management of P. hysterophorus by introducing to other suitable areas in Nepal.

  • Web service is defined to support interoperable machine to machine interaction over a network and defined as distributed technologies. Recently in web service environment, security has become one of the most critical issues. An attacker may expose user privacy and service information without authentication. Furthermore, the users of web services must temporarily delegate some or all of their behalf. This results in the exposure of user privacy information by agents. We propose a delegation model for providing safety of web service and user privacy in ubiquitous computing environments. In order to provide safety of web service and user privacy, XML-based encryption and a digital signature mechanism need to be efficiently integrated. In this paper, we propose web service management server based on XACML, in order to manage services and policies of web service providers. For this purpose, we extend SAML to declare delegation assertions transferred to web service providers by delegation among agents.

  • This study is to explore factors to consider for effective operation of synchronous online education in college. Synchronous online education is expanding in higher education. However, there is insufficient to comprehensively identify key components based on the learners' experience and perception. Using qualitative analysis on content of group interview and multidimensional scale analysis, the experience and perception of learners were identified. For the effective operation, interaction should be considered important, and rapport between learners needs to be built. In addition to improving the system in which activity tools are integrated, instructors should play mainly facilitator role, and learners have to manage the environment for immersion. For the types of online education, learners were divided into the dimension of 'activity' and 'temporality'. Further, it is to develop optimized design strategies considering its characteristics.

  • Recently, as the number of used trading sites supporting used trading increases, users want to search for a variety of information in real time. This new change has enabled a new type of C2C (Commerce to Commerce) transaction in the e-commerce base. However, since each used trading site has its own characteristics, it is difficult to standardize the whole. Therefore, in this paper, we studied a system that provides the transaction data used by the user in real time and provides the desired information quickly. In this paper, we researched the crawler system necessary for the development of the integrated trading system for used goods through Internet e-commerce, and made it possible to provide information in the web environment desired by the user through the defined morpheme analyzer. Therefore, in this study, we designed a system that provides information desired by users without accessing various used goods sites.

  • Turfgrass, the most widely grown ornamental crop, is severely affected by fungal pathogens including Sclerotinia homoeocarpa, Rhizoctonia solani, and Magnaporthe poae. At present, turfgrass fungal disease management predominantly relies on synthetic fungicide treatments. However, the extensive application of fungicides to the soil increases residual detection frequency, raising concerns for the environment and human health. The bacterial volatile compound, 2,3-butanediol (BDO), was found to induce plant resistance. In this study, we evaluated the disease control efficacy of a combination of stereoisomers of 2,3-BDO and commercial fungicides against turfgrass fungal diseases in both growth room and fields. In the growth room experiment, the combination of 0.9% 2R,3R-BDO (levo) soluble liquid (SL) formulation and 9% 2R,3S-BDO (meso) SL with half concentration of fungicides significantly increased the disease control efficacy against dollar spot and summer patch disease when compared to the half concentration of fungicide alone. In field experiments, the disease control efficiency of levo 0.9% and meso 9% SL, in combination with a fungicide, was confirmed against dollar spot and large patch disease. Additionally, the induction of defense-related genes involved in the salicylic acid and jasmonic acid/ethylene signaling pathways and reactive oxygen species detoxification-related genes under Clarireedia sp. infection was confirmed with levo 0.9% and meso 9% SL treatment in creeping bentgrass. Our findings suggest that 2,3-BDO isomer formulations can be combined with chemical fungicides as a new integrated tool to control Clarireedia sp. infection in turfgrass, thereby reducing the use of chemical fungicides.

  • Hampyeong Bay has a narrow seawater channel and a complex topographical structure. The sand content of the tidal flat soil is increasing due to asymmetrical sedimentation. Through the investigation of the vegetation distribution and the use of the line-transect method, sand flats were observed to gradually change the vegetation distribution of salt marshes. Comparing the vegetation area between 2016 and 2022, the obligate halophyte Suaeda maritima decreased by 74% and Zoysia sinica increased by 75%. Z. sinica seems to support the robustness of the dune environment by trapping sediments such as sand in the colony, because the underground rhizomes and stems are highly developed. To establish an effective conservation management plan for tidal flats, an integrated study should be conducted to assess the impact of changes in tidal flat soil and the interaction of vegetation communities in Hampyeong Bay.

  • According to the IPCC analysis, severe climate changes are projected to occur in Korea as the temperature is expected to rise by 3.2 ℃, the precipitation by 15.6% and the sea level by 27cm by 2050. It is predicted that the occurrence of abnormal climate phenomena - especially those such as increase of concentrated precipitation and extreme heat in the summer season and severe drought in the winter season - that have happened in Korea in the past 30 years (1981-2010) will continuously be intensified and accelerated. As a result, the impact on and vulnerability of the water management sector is expected to be exacerbated. This research aims to predict the climate change impacts on streamflow of Daecheong Lake area of Geum River in South Korea during the summer and winter seasons, which show extreme meteorological events, and ultimately develop an integrated policy model in response. We projected and compared the streamflow changes of Daecheong Lake area of Geum River in South Korea in the near future period (2020-2040) and the far future period (2041-2060) with the reference period (1991-2010) using the HEC-HMS model. The data from a global climate model HadGEM2-AO, which is the fully-coupled atmosphere-ocean version of the Hadley Centre Global Environment Model 2, and RCP scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) were used as inputs for the HEC-HMS model to identify the river basins where cases of extreme flooding or drought are likely to occur in the near and far future. The projections were made for the summer season (July-September) and the winter season(November-January) in order to reflect the summer monsoon and the dry winter. The results are anticipated to be used by policy makers for preparation of adaptation plans to secure water resources in the nation.
