  • In this paper, I first examine Reiss'(2005) arguments for the causal instrumental variable. Second, I argue that the conditions for causal transitivity I consider meet what the causal instrumental variables and the interveners of the manipulation theory of causation are intended to hold. Reiss shows that two conditions for instrumental variables are not sufficient for causal significance of independent variables for dependent variables. Reiss articulates and reformulates the conditions for instrumental variables in terms of the conditions on causality, while naming his instrumental variables as causal instrumental variables. Reiss argues that the causal instrumental variables are similar to the interveners of the manipulation, or intervention theory of causation. He further argues that the causal instrumental variables do a better job the interveners do. I argue that the conditions for causal transitivity I consider meet the goal the conditions for the causal instrumental variables and the conditions for the interveners both are intended to achieve.

  • This study analyses the effect of a minimum wage on employment by using the government's progressiveness as an instrumental variable. The Ordinary Least Squares regression (OLS) can result in upward biased employment effect due to the endogeneity among variables. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse the casuality that removed endogeneity between variables by using proper instrumental variables. The analysis using instrumental variable shows that the growth of the increasing rate of the minimum wage reduces employment. The negative effect of employment depending on the increase of minimum wage corresponds with the predictions of Neoclassical Economics.

  • This research is designed to identify factors that affect life satisfaction of the Korean elderly by studying residential environments and individual personalities as independent variables, and life satisfaction of the elderly as a dependent variable. It also includes emotional and instrumental support to describe relations between variables as mediating variables. It utilizes a questionnaire survey as its research method and studies those aged 65 and over living in urban, suburban and rural areas. In addition, regression and path analysis is used to identify casual links between different variables. The results are as follows: (1) Direct factors that impact emotional support are home ownership (direct effect= -.18) and transportation services (.15). That is, those who own their home and have easy access to public transpiration show increased levels of emotional support. (2) Direct factors that affect instrumental support are economic status (direct effect= .311) and living arrangement (.17). In other words, those who are financially stable and live with their children have more instrumental support. (3) Factors linked directly to life satisfaction of the elderly are their age (direct effect= -.10), health status (.19), economic status (.25), region of living (.22) and housing type (.19). (4) Among the mediating variables, emotional support has direct effect (.45) while instrumental support has indirect effect (.16).

  • This study examined the effects of indemnity private health insurance on the medical utilization among the Korean adults. The used data were the 2014 survey data of Korea Health Panel, and the number of subjects was 11,436. Authors employed instrumental variable regression model where the instrument variables for controlling for endogeneity of indemnity were the purchasing of private pension and number of family members. The results showed that the number of outpatient visits and the number of hospitalizations for indemnity private health insurance subscribers were higher than non-subscribers. The number of household members and the private pension variables were proved to be appropriate as instrumental variables. This paper recommends the Korean government to monitor and evaluate the effects of indemnity private health insurance on the medical utilization in order to improve the efficiency of health care finance.

  • This study investigated the degree to which instrumental measurements explain the variation in pork loin tenderness as assessed by the sensory evaluation of trained panelists. Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBS) had a significant relationship with the sensory tenderness variables, such as softness, initial tenderness, chewiness, and rate of breakdown. In a regression analysis, WBS could account variations in these sensory variables, though only to a limited proportion of variation. On the other hand, three parameters from texture profile analysis (TPA)-hardness, gumminess, and chewiness-were significantly correlated with all sensory evaluation variables. In particular, from the result of stepwise regression analysis, TPA hardness alone explained over 15% of variation in all sensory evaluation variables, with the exception of perceptible residue. Based on these results, TPA analysis was found to be better than WBS measurement, with the TPA parameter hardness likely to prove particularly useful, in terms of predicting pork loin tenderness as rated by trained panelists. However, sensory evaluation should be conducted to investigate practical pork tenderness perceived by consumer, because both instrumental measurements could explain only a small portion (less than 20%) of the variability in sensory evaluation.

  • Because sampling interval for data collection tends to be short compared with the overall processing time, in chemical process, instrumental process related tanks or furnace collected data have a significant autocorrelation. Insufficient control technique and frequent control actions cause unstable condition of the process. Traditional control charts which were developed based on iid (independently and identically distributed) among data cannot be applied on the existence of autocorrelation. Also unstable process is difficult to identity or diagnose. Because large-scale process has a lot of measurable variables and multi-step-structures among data, it is difficult to find relation between measurable variables and nonconformity. In this paper, we suggested an appicable model to diagnose the process and to find relation between measurable variables (CTQ) and nonconformity in the process having autocorrelation, unstable condition frequently, a lot of measurable variables, and multi-step-structure. And we applied this model to real process, to verify that the process engineers could easily and effectively diagnose the process and control the nonconformity.

  • The aggregate matching function is estimated to explain dynamics among job seekers, vacancies and new hires in Korea. Due to measurement errors inherent in vacancies data, I introduce a latent variable for job openings and use the instrumental variables to correct its endogeneity. Matching efficiency is also estimated using some explanatory variables like job seekers' characteristics and public employment services. The result shows that Korea's matching function also exhibits a constant returns to scale.
